Jena 6 Inspires Magazine to Rise Up, Face Race

Posted Jun 23rd 2008 11:00AM by Jeff Douglas
Filed under: BlackSpin, Jena Six

A new magazine about race and ethnicity issues launched this week and the magazine's creator says the Jena Six case inspired her to create the publication.

RiseUp, based in Kansas City, Mo., is expected to reach 4.3 million people, getting inserted in the Washington Post, New York Daily News, St. Louis Post-Dispatch and eight other Sunday newspapers each week.

"I started RiseUp because I wanted to provide a readily accessible tool to help us solve some of the problems we face as a society when it comes to race relations," founder Janice Ellis said. ...

Janice Ellis"What struck me most was the Jena Six case and how high-school children were using some of the most hateful symbols in our history in this day and age to hurt one another. That proves that there is a real educational gap around race and what we hold in common," Ellis told Newsweek.

In the first issue, the magazine covers weddings and celebrating ethnic heritage;closing the racial divide and future issues will focus on education and the election.

Ellis told Newsweek that the overall goal of the magazine is to celebrate race and ethnicity and help us better understand our differences; to celebrate our commonalities and build a great foundation to bridge the gaps that divide us.

2. I agree with this comment about racism against Blacks
from Latinos. It's really bad. I understand why so many Black people are against illegal immigration. But
it's like they have to put us down to get favoritism
from whites. This really needs to be addressed in this mag. But I'm sure whites are behind this whole
mess.

3. This is a very good idea because there is never too much that we can say about race. i n i should applaud Ms Ellis..U go!!

In order to solve a problem you have to identify it. Is this magazine going to be about white racism against blacks while the racism that latinos dish out against blacks is overlooked. Thier culture is very racist against blacks and not much is said about it. Its like they get a pass and are allowed to act disparingly and racist towards blacks and it's o.k. so long as they aren't white. As if being disrespected by whites is the only kind of disrespectfulness that should not be tolerated. Anyone else notice more and more, the racism being exhibited by young hispanic adults and even hispanic children towards blacks?

5. People please understand that certain people were breeding like animals in order to upset the natural thing against blacks and whites. This started around the 30s and 40s,when whites felt they were were losing, they imported these buffers(our obstacles).Black people have a lot to learn about who is our friends and who,s not.Overthe span of many years I have witnessed doctors(non black) encouraging black women and girls to have abortions, while telling latinos have as many kids as you want. This is a different kind of genocide, butthats whatit is.

6. Ok yes people come from different ethnic points ,people are different, yes ,yet racism has eaten its way through all ethnic, social , geographic, and financial backdrops to now become a subtle yet very concrete weapon against people who are considered šnot from hereš i live in europe, and i have seen whites against blacks , whites against latinos, the latinos in turn against blacks, here in spain they will quickly tell you oh we are very new to this immigration thing,so evryother day they commit seeminly simple but very powerful crimes against people of different colour all in the name of ah` we dont know how to handle this, after 30 years of living with the so called immigrants what excuse would you now profer? as your reasons? and we arent even going back to the fact thatthey spanish people too where immigrants to countries like argentina, venezuela e.t.c.not too long , ago i wish wecan have the opportunity to buy this magazine if only to bridge a little gap!!

8. this is maybe what we need to unite as one people.. racism is crazy and is spreading even online.... where people cant see each other.. the radio station in, i think, texas, that talk racism freely and society lets it.. that is crazy.. the KKK is still alive.... and really we need this magazine,, to even probably deal with it in our own minds.. congrats miss ellis.. keep it goin..for UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL...and when we all come together on this line.. then and only then SHALL WE RISE

laura green at 7:49AM on Jun 24th 2008

9. In just reading some of the comments it is clear that there needs to be a dialogue on cultural divides, I hope this one works to allow communication to succeed in opening minds. Good Luck Ms. Ellis!

10. NO PEOPLES ESCAPE RACISM, THE IRISH PEOPLE WERE INSLAVED AND TREATED THE SAME HARSH WAY AS THE AFRICAN PEOPLES HERE IN AMERICA, CHECK THE HISTORY AND THEN EVERYBODY "WAKE-UP!"

11. The sad thing about hate for Blacks, it will never end. Not in this lifetime. Living in Orlando for 26 years, sold home and moved back to my hometown of Miami for 15 months and ran back to Orlando after a sad life in Miami with the rudness and hispanics that Blacks opened their arms to help, putting us deeper into poverty and they have done nothing to help those black communities. Blacks pushed out of neighborhoods, housing built on project property and then sold back to people who'd never even lived in that area of color. After doing research on an apartment to move back to Orlando, it was the pits. We later learned they were mostly empty and were going to go condo but, used that excuse to clean it up. Well some of the same scum were able to move back in. It became a war zone. Everything seemed okay, moved in in June 07 and got them to let me break my lease and moved out of Orlando in 9 months on a 1-year lease. It was horrible in Rosemont area. Shootings, murders, robberies and you name it. Don't move to Waterstone Apartments. Drug dealors even live in the gated complex and one drug dealor was shot after he opened his door to someone he apparently knew. Someone was shot before him, at the gate. The complex made the guy that got shot inside the complex take down his camera's in order to see who was outside and now they have another drug dealor in the complex with camera's mounted and no one is doing nothing. They even have armed guards and the drugs are right under their noses. These are sick times because now, "Crime has no Address," thanks to Pres. Bush and it will be getting worst with no jobs, no money and people scrambling to take care of their needs or their family needs. This magazine is just a drop in the bucket because a lot of these criminals that need to see this magazine, "DON'T EVEN READ OR CARE WHAT'S GOING ON" as long as they can get theirs. God help and Bless Us All. You AIN'T seen crime yet, just live long enough.

12. JENA 6 SHOULD HAVE INSPIRED A MAGAZINJE FOR BLACK MEN TO STEP UP TO THE PLATE AND PROTECT THIER COMMUNITIES AND BE ROLE MODELS FOR BLACK BOYS AND PROTECTORS OF BLACK GIRLS. BLACK ON BLACK CRIME IS A BIGGER PROBLEM THAN RACISM. JUST LOOK AT DC, PHILLY, DETROIT, ETC. THOSE 6 PUNKS WERE NO CHOIR BOYS AND ALL BUT ONE HAD NO FATHER INVOLVED IN THIER LIVES.

4REAL at 11:23AM on Jun 24th 2008

13. I listen to alot of Black talk radio, and it annoys me how the hosts and black leaders insist on including the Latino community in discussions about issues that affect us. Don't we get it yet?? The Latino community doesn't give a crap about the Black community. I think it's about time we start looking after US, and let everyone else fight their own battles.

Avril at 1:17PM on Jun 24th 2008

14. I have kept quiet about Jena 6 but right now I am very tired of this case, where several blacks jumped one white......I feel it was wrong who ever did it, it was wrong when the whites did it years ago, but damn if we are going to live in the past forever, then we will never free ourselves our minds our souls are anything else. I refuse to let the actions of a very ignorant whites send me to hell. All i can hear is how we were treated, yes, we were treated like dirt, but I don't feel we need to go around acting like we have to pay the whites back. I feel the boys were wrong, it was to much, plus there was another way to handle it, and the boys were all on an award show talking about their fans! See, this is how far it has gotten, they shouldn't have any damn fans for damn near killing a kid!!!! How do we get to the point where we feel what they did was right? What happened in the past has nothing to do with either kid! They probably weren't even born! If it had been whites that jumped that kid, they would have been just as wrong, but these boys all look like they did something right.....but they did not!

Louise at 2:05PM on Jun 24th 2008

15. First, I would like to commend you on your magazine. I would also like to be a contributor as writer trained in issues of social justice. Secondly we must learn that prejudice does not equal racism. Racism, sexism, etc. has to do with power. If you have no power you may be prejudiced but not racist, etc. Latinos are not, I repeat not our enemies. Our true enemies have used different ethnic groups against each other to deflect attention from our true enemies. Latinos and Blacks are allies in this struggle. Though it is true that the Irish were not considered white by the Europeans that were already here and treated badly. There badd treatment does not compare to slavery. The Irish were given white status to stop them from aligning with the black slaves against their mutual oppressor. Black on black crime is cuased by rascism and our own stupidity. We must own what is our fault. And yes racism is alive, strong and well. It has just morphed into a more subtle form. Take care, learn and teach.
