Soul Train Back on the Tracks

Posted Jun 20th 2008 8:00AM by Carmen Dixon

Can't you just hear the whistle?

The S-o-u-l Train is back on the tracks. After more than 35 years, Don Cornelius has sold his "Soul Train" franchise to MadVision, a Los Angeles based production company.

The new owners see big money making potential in opening up the "show's archives for older consumers for older consumers as well as to create a new version of the program for younger ones."

Are you ready to take a ride on the Soul Train, again? Well, I am. I can just see it now. ...

Just think of the merchandising opportunities:

Soul Train Wigs - Slide on the Snatch Back or Big-Afro of your dreams

Soul Train fashion line – Because natural fiber is so overrated!

Soul Train shoes for men – featuring the finest in pastel colored platforms with chunky heels

I'm just playin'. I love "Soul Train" for all of the hours of pleasure, and fashion guidance, it's gave me and my family over the years. And also, I mean, you can't just do the "Electric Slide" all the time. Every good wedding party eventually breaks out the "Soul Train" line.

But I can't see "Soul Train" without Don Cornelius. I mean, "Love, peace and sooouuul." Who else can do it?

So, what do you think : "Soul Train 35.0" or should the show just live on in our memory...and DVD?

2. what do you mean he sold the show? I can't imagine how the show will be without Don Cornelius hosting.

4. There's also a book out about SOUL TRAIN. It's called A CRITICAL HISTORY OF SOUL TRAIN ON TELEVISION, and it's published by McFarland & Company.

5. I would buy Soul Train seasons from the 60 & 70s in a minute. Obviously MadVision knows there are millions of baby boomers who would do the same. The legal battle over the music will be insane. I hope they can accomplish their goals.

6. them royalties are gonna be a mutha trucka..I hope the folks at MadVision release the behind the scenes raw footage too..that would take it to the next level..

Dick Clark had the same problem trying to air the "Best of Bandstand" on VH1 and it didnt last more than a month..gotta clear everything.

I am sure they can work out the same deal as "Midnight Special" and "Ed Sullivan".

Keep them 70's episodes coming!
