First Peek At 'The Secret Life Of Bees' With Jennifer Hudson

Posted Jun 20th 2008 9:55PM by Wilson Morales
Filed under: It's All Reel

While she may have had a small but pivotal role in this summer's blockbuster hit 'Sex and the City: The Movie', Jennifer Hudson will have a bigger role in her next film, 'The Secret Life Of Bees', which will pair her with Dakota Fanning, Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys, and Sophie Okonedo.

Set in South Carolina in 1964, story centers on Lily Owens (Fanning), who escapes her lonely life and troubled relationship with her father by running away with her caregiver and only friend (Hudson) to a South Carolina town that holds the secret to her mother's past.Latifah, Okonedo and Keys play the three sisters

'The Secret Life of Bees' is based on a 2002 bestselling novel by American author Sue Monk Kidd. Directed by Gina Prince Bythewood, the film also stars Nate Parker and Tristan Wilds.

1. I can't wait to see this movie in October. It sounds like just the kind of movie i favor. Drama with a twist of suspense. Life stuff that really happens. "Can't Wait"

2. Apparently not Teddy. Singers & Rappers in movies mean more money. They don't get paid for their talent, they get paid for their name. I'm about as annoyed with it as well, but that's the way things are.

Blu at 12:19AM on Jun 22nd 2008

3. I didn't know Halle Berry, Vivica Fox, Gabrielle Union, Erica Hubbard, Alfre Woodard, Loretta Devine, Zoe Saldena, Regina King, Sanaa Lathan, Angell Conwell, Anika Noni Rose, Hazelle Goodman, April Grace, Tonya Pinkins, Audra McDonald, Viola Davis, and Kerry Washington are all rappers or pop singers!

4. Why don't you guys go over somewhere else to throw a hissy Fit!! I mean Jennifer Hudson is not even a pop star, her claim to fame was her dreamgirls movie and her audition for some singing show she didn't win, so Next.

There are many talented people who have always been able to act and sing... so its nothing new white black or whatever.

This looks kind of interesting.

5. why must it be a negative thing to have rappers or singers (females) be in movies?? first of all these woman are talented and have worked hard to get to the stage of acting...they went to drama schools using their income from their singing careers, if anything these women are smart by diversifying their careers to another level, they have a dream and a vision to achieve a goal, isn't that something people always go after?? so they have achieved it and congrats to them for doing it for themselves. To even have black actresses doing it big on the silver screen like hudson and latifah who have both been nominated for the oscars and hudson prevailing is an inspiration because you dont see many black actresses being given the opportunity nowadays...and thats sad!

6. I'm just saying that there are plenty of black actresses who are talented, educated and well trained-did I say EDUCATED. Who can;t get work being that white studio heads just view every black as a rapper or singer. Then it is the same exact ones over and over and over. My kid's generation have no new black actors coming up the way that I did when Spike Lee started rolling out his films and Cosby started rolling out his shows. Now every black in a film has to have been jumping around on stage or on American Idol just to even get the job! It looks racist and I am 100% certain the black females who have studied and trained to be actors arent amused. I am not spending 50.00 to make a trip to a movie to see some rappers playing around. They have to earn my money -so GIVE ME SOME REAL ACTING TALENT! These new white actors get broken into Hollywood every year and blacks get the same hand of rappers and musical acts passed off as serious actresses.

8. I understand everything that all of you are saying and agree in some cases (Beyonce & 50 Cent comes to mind first) but not in the case of Queen Latifah. Through her production company she has created opportunities for young black actors and actresses to get on the big screen and Flavor Unit also manages some great talent like Terrence Howard.

I don't see any reason why the Black Community shouldn't be supportive of this film. Not only does it have four (I'll say it again, FOUR) black women as the leads, but it is directed, produced, and written for the screen by black women as well.

I agree with Blu, these ladies have worked very hard and in my opinion are doing an amazing job. They have managed to craft diverse and inspiring careers and should be commended, not vilified.

Chloe at 10:18AM on Jun 22nd 2008

9. Jennifer Hudson won an oscar for her role in Dreamgirls (2006). She is an actor. She had dreams like the rest of us; she worked hard like the rest of us; she achieved her dreams unlike most of us. In my opinion, she should be represented as worthy and qualified.

JellyB at 7:11PM on Jun 22nd 2008

10. THERE ARE INDEED SOME MUSICIANS WHO SHOULDN'T HAVE MADE THE MOVE TO FILM, BUT LATIFAH JUST DIDNT ROLL OVER AND START ACTING SHE HAS BEEN AT IT FOR OVER 15 YRS.

KEYS BRINGS HER NAME AND TALENT TO THIS FILM, HER PERFORMANCE IN 'SMOKING ACES' AND SEVERAL OF HER VIDEOS ARE OUTSTANDING.

HUDSON, MAY BE KNOW FOR HER SINGING, BUT WHO'S TO SAY SHE DOES WANT TO ACT JUST AS BAD.

DON'T HATE (TEDDY) BECAUSE THESE PERFORMERS TRY TO STEP OUT AND DO SOMETHING ELSE.

Hollywood at 9:03AM on Jun 23rd 2008

11. I look at it this way and maybe this is weird but white singers wished they had the talent to cross over like these girls do into acting. I was on the set of this film and Alicia Keys is gonna knock your socks off. Same with Latifah. They got a great cast and the other names mentioned, some were considered, but they got it right with this cast. Gonna be an award winner!

12. I've read the book too and thought it was a wonderful book. I too will be comparing the movie to the book. I see 13 comments but only one person said she read the book #12 Atina

Kevin at 6:01AM on Jun 25th 2008

13. I also think the book was wonderful. I hope the movie will do the book justice. I see all of these comments, but only one person admits to reading the book which is #12 Atina.

Kevin at 6:04AM on Jun 25th 2008

14. I can't wait for the movie to come out. The book was absolutely wonderful. I read it the month after I lost my mother. It has a wonderful message. The castng sounds perfect. I hope the movie will stay true to the book.

Atina at 7:16AM on Jun 25th 2008

15. Although I agree just becasue you can sing and want to be an actress or actor does not make you one but in the case of Queen Latifah she has earned her stripes. First having small roles on Fresh Prince of Bel Air and in the movie Juice to having her own PRIMETIME TV show. There is also LL Cool J who has done a good job of crossing over and the singer Tyrese. So to all the haters you make people want to go see htme to see what all of the fuss is about...haters are the best free advertisement that you can get.
