San Francisco Democrats and California Dreaming

Posted May 28th 2008 11:00AM by Faye Anderson
Filed under: BlackSpin, Elections, Barack Obama

I am in the City by the Bay, where the cable cars climb halfway to the stars. But I have not taken one since the fare was raised to $5.00.

When I moved from San Francisco, I did not leave my heart behind. A city that once was my sanctuary is now a sanctuary for illegal immigrants.

It is also a safe haven for the homeless who camp out in doorways surrounded by their sh stuff. That is, when they're not panhandling and generally making the streets of San Francisco rather grim.

Right now, polls show Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton lead John McCain in the Golden State. That's good news for Democrats. But there's also some ominous signs on the horizon.

The California Supreme Court earlier this month overturned the will of the people and sanctioned same-sex marriage. Mind you, I'm old-school so I'm all for loving the one you're with. That said, I think marriage is between one man and one woman.

Not so in San Francisco, where 4,000 same-sex marriages were performed at City Hall in 2004. The court stepped in and voided the "marriages."

Also in 2004, a same-sex marriage initiative on the Ohio ballot was credited with peeling away black voters. In the run-up to the general election, a Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies poll showed President Bush's approval ratings among African Americans were 30 percent favorable to 67 percent unfavorable. Still, Bush received 16 percent of the black vote in Ohio, up from nine percent in 2000.

Since President Reagan's reelection campaign, Republicans have used the metaphor "San Francisco Democrats" as code for a party that is out of touch with the values of small town Americans (read: Reagan Democrats).

With the California Marriage Protection Act on the ballot, Democrats may not be California dreaming in November. Instead, they may have nightmares knowing that they again snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

1. With views and opinions like those, I'm glad you left the Bay Area. Be sure to never come back, good riddance.

2. Why are so many people opposed to same sex marriage? How does that harm our indiviual homes, relationshsips or society? Why must America continue prejudices, racism, classism, sexism... the isms?

Most say that same-sex marriage isn't calid because they cannot naturally conceive children, but what about all the heterosexual couples who also cannot bare children?

what about all of the people who don't want children? Is that really the issue? Naw... I think it is just one more mechanISM to keep people oppressed.

The funny thing is, I have so many L.G.B.T. people in my life who have children, love children, raise beautiful upstanding, educated children, who want more children. These peole also have life partners... spouses. Some of whom have been together for 8, 10, 15, 20, 23 yrs. Thats much longer than alot of people stick together.

I also have heterosexual& L.G.B.T. friends who don't want children. They just want an equal life with the one the love. What's so wrong about that?

Wanting health care and other benefits with your life partner?

Having someone who will be responsibile for you and you them is something I would think others would be in favor of because that means less we as tax payers have to worry about, less relatives and friends have to worry about financially... emotionally when our L.G.B.T. family and friends are married to the one the love... I don't know its a "no brainer" to me.

Marriage is a huge responsibility and a ginormous step in life. As people find love, let them love. Consenting adults to one another should have the right to marry.

Interrational couples were denied the opportunity intiailly, but we overturned that.

Let's overturn hatred and allow same sex marriage.

Why are you fighting this issue?

If you are closeted and do not want to draw attention to your same sex feelings... that is ok too. Just stop denying others the rights they should legally have as US citizens, world citizens, human beings.

One love - one heart people!

4. We don't judge homosexuals (I don't think therte is anything "gay" about being being homosexual). God does. The Bible calls it abomination (unspeakably disgusting). Any problems with that judgement needs to be taken up with God. sho nuff

FIFTH WARD PREACHER at 4:49PM on May 28th 2008

5. I dno't really have a concrete stance on same sex marriage. I mean, I come from a very religious family, my parents are both preachers, so I was taught from a very young age that gay people were nasty and sinful, and for most of my life I believed that. But when I started high school, I became more open minded and begin to look at things from another perspective, I mean who are we really to say that gay people don't love eachother as much as same sex couples live eachother? And who are we to judge them and say that your wrong, or your gross? When one fo my close friends came out and confirmed that he was a homosexual to his family, who just like mine are strictly religious, he was basically black listed. They teased and harrased him like crazy, and these were not strangers, they were his own flesh and blood, and good christians at that. So, I don't know what to think about gay marriage, I mean a part o fme feels that it's very, very, wrong, but another part of me thinks that everybody should be treated equally regardless.

6. I have no problem with two gay men or women getting together, what I don't like is this union being called a marriage. Gays have different names for themselves and everything about themselves, why do they want to use a term that has always been used to discribe a heterosexual union? Come on gay people, you're bright and intelligent people, come up with a different name for you're union. The heterosexuals have one for theirs get one for yours. I think that would appease most of us heterosexuals, even those who find homosexuality disgusting.
