R&B Superstar Rihanna To Make Film Acting Debut In 'Mama Black Widow'

Posted May 22nd 2008 11:11AM by Wilson Morales
Filed under: It's All Reel

R&B Superstar Rihanna, who's made plenty of appearances on videos and films as herself, including 'Bring It On: All or Nothing', where she hosts the cheerleading competition at the end of the movie, will be making her acting debut in 'Mama Black Widow'.

The Caribbean singer will be star alongside Mos Def, Macy Gray, Anthony Anderson and Kerry Washington.

'Mama Black Widow' is adapted from the novel written by Iceberg Slim, who was one of America's most famous and bestselling African-American authors. It is the portrait of a black family's migration from the Mississippi fields of the segregated south to the supposedly more open-minded underground of Chicago in the 1930s.

The story follows Otis Tilson's struggle to keep his family together as they navigate through a city (Chicago) rife with alcoholism, pimping, sexual deviancy and racial degradation. Told in stark and uncompromising language, this tale of a family's journey is a harsh testament of lives lived on the margins of a racist and predatory urban world. Darren Grant, who directed Tyler Perry's Diary of a Mad Black Woman, will helm this film.

Otis Tilson will be played Brian J. White ("Stomp The Yard') - who struggles to maintain his family in the underworld of Chicago; wading through alcoholism, pimping, sexual deviation and racial degradation. Rihanna will play Carol, Tilson's sister.

2. Sounds like Rihanna will be making her film acting debut in a very challenging role.

3. No offense to Rihanna, but why do rappers and singers keep getting roles in movies when there are so many young black actors and actresses out there who have worked for years to get roles? How does being a pop singer or rapper automatically equate into acting ability?

Felix Krull at 5:40PM on May 26th 2008

4. This is like when they had Diddy in A Raisin In The Sun...well...actually they were REALLY stupid for that one...but she still better be one hell of a actress to pull this role off. Then she suppose to be from 1930s Mississippi? If you ain't from the south or really been there you can't imitate it without makin fun of it unless you can really control your voice...like T Howard in Hustle & Flow...I'm from Memphis so I hated him for that. She doesn't even have an American accent..I don't know how she gon pull this one off. This movie is the WRONG debut. She shoulda started with a comedy not drama....but hey..she might pull it off. I doubt it..but she just might....

5. Rihanna, go for it! The reason why so many rappers and singers are getting the acting is because they are fresh and hot with popularity. That sells tickets. Justin Timberlake in the Love Guru....That's gonna be funny.

6. I love Rihanna, and I'm excited to see how she acts, and to that retard that said that she doesn't even have an "American Accent" your wrong! First of all,you can BARELY pick-up on her accent, and 2nd, waht exactly is an "American Accent"? Because people talk differntly depending on which part of America they come from anyway!Anyway!Rihanna rocks!

7. You go Girl! Proud to see my black people prosper. As long as it is in a good way. This is good, we must never forget where we came from and how we got here.
