Gay Marriage: Cali Gets Two Snaps Up (With a Twist and a Kiss)

Posted May 16th 2008 11:00AM by Madison J. Gray
Filed under: BlackSpin

Maybe I'm writing this because you guys had so much fun bashing me when I wrote about gay hate crimes in Jamaica.

Well, if you think that was wild, you're really going to soak your pink shorts when you hear that California has overturned a ban on gay marriage, which clears a path to make the state the second in the nation after Massachusetts to legalize marital unions between the same sex. ...

Now, despite all the rhetoric that I know will come as a result of this, and the two sides of the argument that has been debating back and forth pretty much most of our lives on the issue, and the leagues of religious leaders that will, at the very least, balk at the very notion, this really is a human rights issue whose time has come.

Martin Luther King once said "an injustice anywhere is an injustice everywhere." What he meant by that is that all people should have the right to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" as the Bill of Rights states. During his day, gay marriage might not have been an issue, but gay people still felt it applied to them. Evidence of that is King's association with Bayard Rustin, King's openly gay friend and comrade in the Civil RIghts movement.

King's late widow, Corretta Scott King, was herself a supporter of the rights of gays and lesbians to marry. In fact she felt that since people who don't live the traditional way have families, then their families should be able to live the same way as other citizens.

Now, despite the religious doctrines, "values," and perspectives held dearly by many, denying gay people the right to marry is essentially precedent for denying a woman the right to an abortion, blacks the right to live where they want to live, sexual assault and abuse victims the right to seek justice, and even victims of police brutality the right to seek recourse.

Why? Because human rights are what this all boils down to. Government has no right to tell people what they can and can't do with their lives. The same people who constantly cry against "big government" should be the main ones supporting gay marriage because it exemplifies freedom from government interference in people's lives. Instead they hypocritically use it for their own political motives, masking it as a "moral cause." Get real!

For the record: government should only sanction and recognize civil unions between whomever wants to enter one, despite their gender, as long as it is between two consenting adults. Marriage itself should be a matter that is decided by individuals and/or whatever religious or cultural institution they belong to. Matrimony should not, under any circumstance, fall under the jurisdiction of the state.

GOVERNMENT SHOULD NEVER, EVER HAVE MORE RIGHTS THAN PEOPLE. PERIOD.

I hope that California leads the way for the rest of the country to actually get into the 21st century and with the rest of the civilized world when it comes to this issue. There are far, far more pressing things to worry about than two homosexuals deciding they want to have the same damn marital drama in their lives as the rest of us.

1. Thank you, BlackVoices, for that inventive and oh-so non-stereotypical headline.

3. Whomever one weds is between their god and themselves. We do a lot of yelling about separating church and state in our Constitution, but yet we want to incorporate both to justify our intolerances. Why don't we leave this to the truths of one's belief in whatever higher power they choose. You have to answer for yourself.

4. What should most be highlighted by this decision is that the foundation of the institution of marriage is fundamentally flawed and that the entire structure has for years been slipping into the sea taking all couples, straight or gay, to a watery grave.

I do not say this because homosexuals don’t deserve the right to be married, they do, but because it would be better to completely strike down the very notion of being married.

5. I support gay marriage 100%.When it comes to discrimination black people are the last ones who should discriminate against ANYONE, OR ANY GROUP of people considering what we go through, and continue to go through practically on a daily basis. If I have to pay taxes,go to work everyday, pay my bills,do the right thing, I will not be denied the opportunity to marry my partner.I could care less what any black bible quoting/thumping person has to say.PERIOD!

6. The sentence in your article,'There are far, far more pressing things
to worry about than two homosexuals deciding they want to have the
same damn marital drama in their lives as the rest of us' sums it up
for me. I have far worse things to worry about in these times such
as the economy, gasoline prices, rising food prices and
just being an african-american and the injustices that continue to occur to people on a daily basis. I believe the right to marry someone should be the right of every citizen regardless of sex, race or religion.

8. CALI’S GAY TORPEDO

Strange that all of a sudden the way has been cleared for this initiative. They have fought over the rights of gays to marry for years in California. And in this the year of the most monumental election in this country's history, those staunch conservatives who have held the line against gay marriages have strangely relented.

The Rush Limburger ruse is present here, and this smells like Rush’s shit where you use media dominance to change your stripes, in order to blend in with those you intend to usurp and bring about confusion to help tank the efforts of the opposition.

What Rush doesn't realize is that same media he uses to spread his garbage, will also play against type with him in the end. Some say that the media has given Senator Obama a free pass. The media is in business, and therefore the prime objective is to make money, so hyping the Obama campaign to create enough opposition in order to have more news to sell is what they will likely do, and have more than likely done. Rush and his playmates are the highly paid dupes.

From this current submarine attack, the Democrats are supposed to lose California hands down in the November general election. Which would undoubtedly cripple Senator Obama’s chances to win if it works.

You see the plan is for this to bring conservatives (gay, but not brave enough to come out of the closet) out in droves and hives at the polls, to offset this “effort to destroy America from within.” It is also supposed to mobilize those who voted for Hillary Clinton in the primaries, who are a majority conservatives and borderline conservatives, or anybody who is simply interested in stopping the Black candidate.

Furthermore it would then give those Democrats remaining on the fence, angered after suffering the loss of Senator Clinton the motivation to return to the polls in November, and vote the straight republican ticket. With John McCain as the main beneficiary of all the backsliding and two faced games.

This is a great opportunity to witness a return to all the confusion and darkness we would be in for under a McCain administration.

Look for more strange and unusual vacillations in the near future. And whatever you accept that you did not ask for, shall be laced with poison.

Sail on the arc of truth, the only unsinkable boat in history.

9. robyn4peace it is TRULY obviously you have not taken the time to speak with homosexuals.... is this because of your walk and life with Jesus The Christ?????? Jesus The Chirst would have spoken to homosexuals and would have invited them to his table. Would you??????? The bottomline is THE GAYS don't choose to be GAY!!!! You've got it twisted boo. So you really believe folks wake one morning and say to themselves I'm going to be gay now. LOL.... If that's the case. I could wake up tomorrow and say I'm going to be gay!! I don't have gay friends but I do know you are born gay. God made them that way!!!!! They didn't choose to be gay just as we didn't choose to be straight. PLEASE us your brain and PRAY for an understanding of others. Also ask yourself could you choose to gay. You're stating they have a choice, then we all do. I didn't have a choice to be striaght!!!!! I was born straight..... I didn't DECIDE one day I was going to be straight!!!!!!!!!!!! and neither did you!!!! So gays didn't have a choice to be gay. I'll pray for you to open your CHRISTAIN understanding and walk in the TRUE life of Jesus the Christ. Lets be more like Jesus he would not have stated what you have stated and he's GOD!!!!! In my Bible... The HOLY Bible Jesus The Christ NEVER said anything about the gays. So why are you running your mouth with HATE??????

10. Despite the fact that Christians may or may not agree with same sex marriage. The one point that Jesus did say for people to do was to love the sinner. Jesus loved the "alleged harlot woman"---Jesus stated that "he without sin cast the first stone" and the crowd walked away from the "harlot" and did not throw one stone at her. Jesus then forgave the woman. He did not have a ralley about her and then cast her away. He spoke to the woman and chose to accept her in the midst of her sinful ways. Gay Marriage or not. You cannot change people from the outside. You have to reach into the heart of man to make deep and lasting changes. I do not know the answer to the question. But I know the finisher of my faith and the one who love us all....God the Father, Jesus the Son and the HolySpirit. Sounds corney right? Well, take this little test. Think about it and try it. If you have something, some deep pain or some deep trouble...talk out into the air...a prayer...say "God if you are real please reveal yourself to me in this situation....come to me in a real way. Allow me to see a miracle today. It does not have to be something big....just a little miracle." Then stand back and watch what happens. It may take one second, or may take weeks, months or years....but try my little litmus test.
Just remember "Judge not least you be judged." The person you are hating or judging may turn out to be a close friend or relative. Love people...the greatest command of God is to love! Love the sinner not the sin!

12. Love is love, people do not choose to be gay they are born that way and God does not make mistakes. Maybe now people can live in their truth and all the down low brothers will become extinct.

One day people will read the WHOLE story about not throwing stones. Read Verse 11

[7] So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
[8] And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.
[9] And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
[10] When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?
[11] She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
