W. Virginia Loss Highlights Obama's Weakness

Posted May 14th 2008 10:00AM by Faye Anderson
Filed under: BlackSpin, Elections, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton

Hillary Clinton easily won West Virginia, beating Barack Obama 67 percent to 26 percent. Clinton's trouncing of Obama did not change the game. Her pick-up of 20 delegates was offset by the 30 superdelegates who moved to Obama in the past week.

West Virginia matters because it highlights Obama's weakness with white working-class voters.
CNN exit polls show that white folks ain't feeling Obama. Indeed, 35 percent of Clinton voters said they would vote for John McCain if Obama is the nominee.

In her victory speech, Clinton said she intends to stay the course:
I am more determined than ever to carry on this campaign until everyone has had a chance to make their voices heard.
She then raised the bar:
Neither of us has the total delegates it takes to win and both Senator Obama and I believe that the delegates from Florida and Michigan should be seated. I believe we should honor the votes cast by 2.3 million people in those states and seat all of their delegates. Under the rules of our party, when you include all 50 states, the number of delegates needed to win is 2,209 (emphasis added), and neither of us has reached that threshold yet. This win in West Virginia will help me move even closer.
Before the polls closed, the Obama campaign released a memo to "Interested Parties." They dismissed his vulnerability with white voters as a "myth":
FACT: Obama's is running as well or better than past Democratic Candidates among white voters.
Fact: In citing exit polls from the general election, the Obama camp is comparing apples with oranges.

To be sure, Democratic presidential candidates have won without a majority of the white vote. But they countered the racial gap with other demographic groups. In November, it will no longer be a black-white paradigm. The changing American electorate means the election will be determined by blacks, whites – and browns.

Obama says he will change the electoral map so West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania are not must-win states. The new battlegrounds will be in states like Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Nevada and New Mexico. To win these swing states, Obama will have to win over Hispanics. But so far, Hispanic voters have not shown him much love.

1. Hilliary does well in states, due to the media report of this mess.
If anyone has single handedly made a mess out of the elction, it has been the US Media.
Was it not the Media, that broke the Rev Wright Controversy, and even worse, was it not they, who escalated the racial tensions between Obama and Hilliary.

The real enemy in this whole election has been the United States Media Outlet, or rather, " THE PROPAGANDA MACHINE"

REMEMBER, YOU HAVE RACIST REPORTERS OUT HERE, AND THEY WILL REPORT THE NEWS FROM A BIASED PERSPECTIVE.

IF YOU HAVE A REPORTER THAT HATES OBAMA, EVERYTHING HE/SHE- SAYS ABOUT OBAMA, WILL BE "SUBJECTIVE", AND IF THEY LIKE OBAMA, THEN EVERYTHING THEY SAY WILL BE , "OBJECTIVE" ABOUT OBAMA.

Just listening to late night news, and paying close attention to their commentating, they all seem to be very subjective of obama. "FOX NEWS" IS THE WORSE..... "FOX" TEARS THAT MAN UP ALL DAY LONG......

THE ONLY WAY TO WIN A WAR, IS TO DEFEAT THE PROPAGANDA MACHINE.

2. I knew Obama would lose in West Virginia it's one of the racist states in the U.S. besides Mississippi if it were up to the white voters there they would vote to have Slavery reinstated so they wouldn't have to do the work themselves. One thing I've noticed since Obama has annouced his run for Presidency is how many racist are truly still alive in the good old USA. As a black woman I feel the USA is stuck 70 year ago when blacks didn't have the right to do much of anything but pick cotton. Isn't it funny how much of the natural diasters happen in the country and racist towns God is sending out a warning and still no one heads the warning. What A Shame!

3. I agree with the first two comments. The main media are very good at what they do, which is to repeat something over and over again until it become set in concrete and you don't forget it unless you have the intelligence to resist their hypnosis, and are able to think and evaluate information for yourself. Hillary has been able to remake herself to fit whichever demographic she is trying to impress. In Selma it was sounding deep dark and black, in New York it's 5th Avenue pearl necklaces, in Pennsylvania its bar hopping and downing shots of Jack Daniels (oops Crown Royal no less). Now in West Va she's mountain mama coal miner's daughter. That's all cool. But I just love Stephanie Tubbs Jones. This mammie really rocks. I think if she had a chance she would go upside Obama's head with a skillet to help Hillary get elected. Yet Obama is being himself and the media tells us that if he would only quit holding his head high, if only he would quit looking good in white dress shirts and Brooks Brothers suits, if only he could walk into a puke smelling bar and hang out with a bunch of beer belly good ol boys, he could get the vote of the non college educated, blue collar, white folks. Give us a break.

4. I don't think that Obama could win the presidency. The are just too many people that would rather vote for any white man than Obama, as sad as that sounds. I think Hillary would have to put up with some of the same for being a woman, but her husband would save her from some of it.

Jen at 1:24PM on May 14th 2008

5. Kimberly, you hit the nail right on the head. Straight out of the Bible. Touch not my anointed and do my prophet no harm. This is America's last chance at redemption. They better heed the warning in the signs of these natual calamaties. Florida (interesting) on fire!... Snow in the desert! Tornadoes, tearing up everything. Hillary wants this soooo bad that she would send the whole country to hell to be on top of that ticket. She's like a rabid dog! It makes me sick just to look at her. Barack has to be a gentleman and not go there, but I will. The lady is a demonic bitch, and she and Bill's true color is now coming to light. And to the other poster. You're right too. The media is to blame for 90% of this. It used to be back in the day, you didn't get any election results until late the following day. Campbell Brown on CNN is a rabid Hillary supporter and practically tears the pundits and experts apart if they disagree with her about Hillary with her slick, sly self. She should have stayed with Channel 4 and Lester Holt. This whole situation is making me physically ill. I'll be glad when it is OVER! Having said that, Barack is the man!

6. I'm a white male who has finally come to grips with this racism thing. I was one who did not believe that the degree of racism, that existed at the height of slavery, could possibly show its ugly-wrinkled-face! Last night's primary, in West Viginia, exposed to the world the hidden base of the K.K.K.! I've never been sooooooooo ashamed!

Keith Smith at 2:01PM on May 14th 2008

7. And Keith, the bad thing about it is that she's playing to it. That's what makes it ugly. We would so vote for her, if she won the nomination fair and square. We've always voted since the voting act was passed. But after this, I wouldn't. Both John Kerry and Al Gore, if I'm not mistaken, won the popular vote, but the rules were not changed for them. Why should they be changed for her? This is insane. To play on peoples fear. Barack is not going to blow up the country. He's not going to put anyone in slavery. He teaches Consitutional Law. He just wants the country to be run the way it should be that's all. Geez.

Sit Your AZZ Down Somewhere Rev. Wright at 2:08PM on May 14th 2008

8. I could not agree with everyone more. This is something I have been saying for years, months, whatever. The media can either make or break person. Like the "Outer Limits Series", they your TV, they control your every thought.

The Media tried to pretend that they shocked on 67% for Hilary in West Virginia. This is not a surprise and had been talked about for weeks how she could possibly win by 70%, especially after she started this continuous race baiting and beating into people heads about the "hard-working white people will only vote for her".

And what is thing about Obama helping her pay her debt???????

Viola at 2:25PM on May 14th 2008

9. Here's another traumatizing reading. I finally looked up the "Clinton Chronicles". Just put "clinton chronicle" in search engine and you get the excerpts from the guy that was with the Clinton's during his governorship in Arkansas that carried into the White House..Just to give tidbits. He stated that the "Clinton Machine" in conjunction with Hilary law firm, did backdoor loans for contribution, the cocaine connection and all the money that the Clintons made with drugs and the drug money was laudered in several locations of bank.

YOU ALL HAVE GOT TO READ THIS. I KNOW THEY WERE ACCUSED WAY BACK WHEN THEY WERE IN THE WHITEHOUSE. ALL OF THIS CROOKED STUFF STARTED BACK IN ARKANSAS WHICH THEY DID ANYTHING TO STAY IN POWER..THE GUY STATES HILARY WAS NOT AT ANY OF PARTIES WITH BILL WHERE THE COCAINE IN ASHTRAYS AS APPETIZERS were served. HE ALSO STATE THAT BILL WAS ON COCAINE AND had to GO TO HIS DOCTOR THREE TIMES WITH HORRIBLE SINUS PROBLEMS FROM SNIFFING SO MUCH COCAINE.

THIS IS A MUST READ.

Viola at 2:38PM on May 14th 2008

10. Sen. Obama Dcan do nothing about the way people in West Virginia were raised. Without knowing why they did not vote for Sen. Obama it is difficult to ascertain whether they looked beyond his skin color, and had a legitimate reason for their rejection. However, it is their right to vote anyway that they desire. I wonder if Sen. Clinton, should she had prevailed as the Democratic nonminee, would have had a difficult time in getting the African-American votes.

Ethel Munson at 4:21PM on May 14th 2008

11. True true and true.I'am simply amazed at the terms
whites invent to replace white racist. So called blue
collar workers are the same poor whites who chose to vote for republicans because they saw democrats
tried to help blacks. They would rather suffer than see
blacks get a lift.I think that's called cutting off your nose to spite your face.As far as these so called blue collar workers struggling to survive, if you're white and struggling, then a lot can be said about your intelligence.Maybe that's why they think rev Wright's
sermon every sunday for 30 years consisted of 15 seconds. The whole world is watching and they can see.

13. Wow! I think its Black Voices that would love to see Obama lose. It appears that there are more negative reports and fault finding on this site than some of the mainstream media that I would expect this brand of negativity. Black Voices should change its moniker to "Crabs in Barrel"! You should be ashamed of the way you constantly overanalyzed anything related to your brother, but allow the white woman a pass. Hillary has more than proven that if she can't have your vote to get what she wants, she has nothing else for y'all to do. That site should be a catalyst for simply a voting campaign or to push Obama, the BLACK candidate, further along! I will not be visiting this site anylonger!

CharChar at 8:28PM on May 14th 2008

14. As a black female I used Black Voices as my screen sign on because I felt I would hear the unbiased truth about news in our culture. Mind you, not white bashing - just solid objective reporting concerning the current trends and news of interest to me. While reading today's 'BlackSpin' column it would be hard to not recognize a hidden agenda against Barrack Obama. In times past we have sold ourselves off the Ivory Coast for silver, and trinkets. Today, we see history repeating itself. I honestly don't know the payoff this time, but 30 pieces of silver sounds familiar. I read other sources; USA Today, local newspapers, other Internet news sites and they are less strident in their views. The Clinton's use to be dear to my heart but along the path of political shenanigans - I crossed sides. If winning a Presidency based on a group of people's ignorance of the quality of a mind versus the color of someone's skin is the way she is willing to win - I don't want 'them' for my President. She has touted that Blue Collar America (white America) will not vote for Obama and finds nothing wrong with this stance. Where is her outrage? And if she isn’t concerned about this issue today, how will she represent me tomorrow?

Colette at 9:36PM on May 14th 2008

15. I'M SURPRISED AT #6 POST, AND I AM GLAD HE SAW THE TRUTH. ALL THAT TALK ABOUT WORKING WHITE CLASS IS REALLY RACIST WHITE FOLKS, HILLBILLIES AND RED NECKS JUST LIKE THE CLINTONS ARE. IT IS DISGUSTING TO HEAR PEOPLE SAY SLICK WILLIE WAS A BLACK PRESIDENT. THE PRESIDENT THAT LOCK UP MORE BLACK FOLKS THAN KILLER BUSH. AND IT'S A SHAME THE MEDIA BROADCASTED ABOUT HIS DRUG ATTIC DAUGHTERS WEDDING AND THAT ALCOHOLIC WIFE OF HIS. HE HAS TORN PEOPLE LIVES APART. PEOPLE WILL NOT HAVE WEDDING OR ESCORT THEIR DAUGHTER TO THE ALTER BECAUSE OF DUMB DRUG USING A*%.
