Producer Will Packer To Do Kemba Smith Story

Posted Apr 10th 2008 3:07PM by Wilson Morales
Filed under: It's All Reel

Will Packer, producer of the box office hits 'Stomp The Yard' and 'This Christmas,' has acquired the rights to produce the dramatic real life story of Kemba Smith. Through his production company, Rainforest Films, the young film maverick plans to produce the yet untitled project in 2009.

Kemba Smith, the only child of professional parents, led a protective middle class upbringing in Richmond, Virginia. She had no criminal record prior to going off to Hampton University where she would fall in love with Peter Hall, who unbeknownst to her, was the leader of a $4 million crack cocaine ring and one of the FBI's 15 Most Wanted.

At the age of 23, she was taken away from her newborn baby to unjustly serve 24 years in jail under harsh drug mandatory sentencing laws, which were harsher than that of rape or manslaughter.

Kemba, however, was a victim of physical and mental abuse. Being minimally involved with the crimes, Kemba was still sentenced to the full extent of the law.

The story made headlines in 2000 after Bill Clinton granted her clemency from a 24.5 year drug conspiracy charge.

Will Packer is currently in pre-production on three films; 'Obsessed,' starring Beyonce Knowles and Idris Elba; 'Phenom' starring Chris Brown and Henry Simmons; and 'Bone Deep' starring Elba and Matt Dillon.

If you were going by physical appearance, Jurnee Smollett of 'The Great Debaters' comes to mind.

If not her, there's Lauren London, Kandyse McClure of SciFi Channel's 'Battlestar Galactica,' blast from the past Reagan Gomez-Preston, who was last seen in 'Beauty Shop' with Queen Latifah, or maybe Keshia Knight-Pulliam.

I like where Packer is going as a producer.

This is one guy who's looking to put out some quality work on the big screen.

There are a few actresses strong enough to play the part, but who do you think should play Kemba?

As far as playing Peter Hall, there are plenty of guys that can play that role, but it's Kemba's part that will be an attractive role to land.

1. Good part for Kimberly Elise. She will do it justice!

2. I remember reading Kembas' story which was featured in one of the african american magazines, Part 1 and Part 2 when President Clinton pardoned her. I am happy to see that see has gotten her life back on track and it is my prayer that she continues to spread her message to todays' young women who feel as if they have to have a "baller" in their life. It is a story that needs to be heard.

3. I think Nia Long is the perfect pick for this role...Her countenance bears the innocence & green manner needed to play the role. THe only actress other than Nia who can pull this off is Golden Brooks (I think that's her name) who plays Mya on the sitcom Girlfriends.

4. I think Jurnee Swollett should palay the part. The boyfriend does not have to be famous either. At least Clinton did ongood thing!!! To me, when doing a true story, the main characters should be somewhat similar to the person. Like Beyonce doing Etta James 0 no way!! I wish much success to Bill Packer. He is telling OUR story, showing black life. Good luck

5. This project in due for 2009. Is Mr. Packer willing to work w / new commers? And if so, how may you audition?

stacy mckenzie at 11:02AM on Apr 14th 2008

6. I would suggest a non-celebrity to play the role of Kemba. A new comer, such as myself, would bring a raw realness to this role.

7. when i met her she told me about the movie and she told me that she would love to have lauren london play her. so i think lauren london would play her well.

8. I think YaYa from America's Next Top Model would do well. I've seen her in two movies since Top Model and this would be a welcomed challange for an actress new to the scene.

9. I have two choices I'm in agreement I think YaYa would play this part very well. My next choice is Elise Neal

10. I was touched by Kemba's story when it was published in Emerge Magazine. During that time period, her story could have resonated with many young black teenage girls circa (1984-1990) because of the crack epidemic and the fast-flash money of neighborhood/campus boys. I am talking about girls who HAD a 'proper' upbringing, but were drawn in by the lure.

I voted for Jurnee Smollet, because I think she will have the proper balance of naivete/swagger that is required for this role.

Good Luck on the production and make sure that it is the kind of movie that can be shown at girls' mentoring groups, Sr. GirlScout meetings, wherever young women gather, such that they learn the valuable lessons from the core of this story.
