In Court Brother, You Lookin' Sharpe

Posted Apr 1st 2008 1:00PM by Madison J. Gray
Filed under: BlackSpin, Sharpe James, Crime and Courts

In our world of freaky governors and mayors, we've lost sight of the real reason most politicians get in trouble: graft.

Fortunately, we've got former Mayor Sharpe James, who is accused of spending 20 years fleecing the city of Newark, washing the hands of his cronies and friends, strong-arming the political establishment and generally being a badboy black politician who got anyone over age 50 to vote for him because that's all he needed to win.

But not once was he ever accused of any crime involving the unzipping of his pants. Now that's what I call integrity.

He's gone on trial for what the feds call putting his hands in the cookie jar one too many times. But dammit, like a true Roman statesman, he gets his kicks above the waistline.

Brings a tear to my eye. Here's to ya Sharpe.

2. I honestly think this is wrong how they are accusing this man who turned newark around from nothing to something of stealing and giving away land deals to his friends It is not RIGHT this man is NOT GUILTY of these charges and I hope and pray that he be found NOT GUILTY now u have cory booker who has done illegal things as well and they are not coming after him please this all started from cory booker and they say what goes around comes around CORY BOOKER watch it cause you are next SHARPE is a cool man who helped many, many people and this is how they repay him by this false and frivilous charges that have no merit

3. THIS IS CRAZY BUT CORECT

MILTON TURNER at 9:50AM on Apr 2nd 2008

4. the people of newark knew ALL ALONG sharpe was stealing. no one cared beacuse he was putting money BACK into the community which other politicians DONT DO.! Also I hope we are not Naive enough to believe Cory Cracker... I mean Booker didnt have something to do with this.. are we.?

gmagic at 9:53AM on Apr 2nd 2008

5. Wrong is wrong. Simple as that. Whenever any politician does these things, it is taking money out of your pocket!

Liz at 10:58AM on Apr 2nd 2008

6. I can't believe some of what I'm reading !!! This man was in office for 20 yrs. and what did he do for the community ??? All I see when I drive through Newark (and I definitely do it quickly so I don't get hit by a speeding bullet), are blighted neighborhoods, people standing on corners doing nothing, and despair !!! 20 yrs. in office and this is what there is to show for it ??? Along comes Cory Booker, who wants to do something positive and the people of Newark, who are so used to failure and corruption accuse him of not being "Black enough"... That's all they can come up with ??? I guess it's true that when all you're used to is failure and not seeing anyone do better, you settle !!! If not anything from this, they need to set some term limits.. 20 yrs. is way too long for a mayor to be in office and not have some kind of successes..whether they be economic, education or housing... Neither of which I see there !!!

7. They know how to steal for you alright. Raise taxes and the works yet look at your streets and how messed up they are. Then the city says there's no jobs. If they cut back all that spending and raises for themselves the tax money can repair the streets. Let me make some money.Click on the google ads that will not cost you but time. http://www.carlwhitmore.com/carlwhitmores

8. Newark was nice a very long time ago. I know that Newark, did not have much before Sharpe, but life was simple. I left Newark about 14 years ago, when I couldn't take it anymore when crime went up and more killings were coming and my children were not safe. I wanted more policing in our neighborhood (oops the police station was on the corner and turn they the other cheek), I am not going to take away any new developments that are now in town, the Movie Theatre, Home Depot, etc. Now my chilren are grown, safe and having their own children in a safe neighborhood, where neighbors look out for one other and are not scare to call the police. NEWARK CAN BE BETTER AND HOPEFULLY ONE DAY IT WILL IN MY LIFE TIME. THERE ARE STILL SOME GOOD PEOPLE IN NEWARK.

9. The honkies are coming out of the walls with their fists full. They've had their chance playing the political game and got caught skimming the books. Lets get some young white stuff to run this country! Fresh out of college with new ideas, because the old ones aren't working!

Alexis at 11:53AM on Apr 2nd 2008

10. I AS A WHITE MAN WHO GREW UP IN THE PROJECTS OF NEWARK IN THE DAYTON ST.COMPLEX ON FREYLNGYSIN AVE. DURING THE RIOTS WHICH WAS BEFORE SHAPRES TIME BUT SET THE TABLE FOR HIS REGIME. HE DID BRING NEWARK UP FROM THE LOWER LEVELS.HE DID IMPROVE.BUT I GUESS POWER CORRUPTS TO A POINT AND STEALING IS STEALING.I DONT STEAL FROM MY JOB?AND USUALLY ITS THE TIP OF THE ICEBURG!SO LETS JUST SUPPORT MR.BOOKER!

LL at 1:52PM on Apr 2nd 2008

11. A modern day Robin Hood I suppose this guy is to be commended? I think not if he is guilty then he is just guilty. Regardless of the appearances of good or good intentions, the end does not justify the means! And the fact that his alledged crime is not of a sexual nature sin is still what it is, SIN!

Gloria Alford at 2:19PM on Apr 2nd 2008

12. He sold properties at a dicounted rate? He sold properties at a discounted rate! For crying out loud HE SOLD PROPERTIES AT A DISCOUNTED RATE!!!!!! What did he do that was soooooo wrong, that calls for further waisting of tax payers money on a bullsh_t trial. Give the man a damn fine and call it a day!
Mayor James was a good mayor, although I feel in the ladder years he could've done more to raise the quality of life in our city. It also would be radically unfair to allow Sharpe to solely wear the burden of blame for the quality of life in Newark. The residents of Newark wear just as much, if not more blame for the quality of life in Newark.
I really hope Sharpe makes out alright with this, because it would be a crying shame to sum up a political lifetime of great acheivements by a few mistakes.

Tone from Newark, NJ at 2:22PM on Apr 2nd 2008

13. Sharpe James snatched the City of Newark from the Jaws of degredation over the course of 20 years. And this is the thanks he gets? Actually whats happening is a game of political smoke and mirrors. The current administration wants the citizens to keep looking as Sharpe so that they wont see how Corey gave a contract for 1.5 million dollars to 660, Inc. An Irvington, N.J. company owned by Carl Sharif (Cory's campaign manager), to develope a news magazine for the City of Newark. Which only 2 issues were printed. Now. . .their contract has been renewed for another $750,000. However, last summer many children did not get their paychecks because of the incompetance of the new regein. And let's talk about Police Director McCarthy (from New York). His daughter has some dubious job with the City of Newark making $90,000 per year. Nobody even knows what it is she does. And all of this has taken place in a matter of a year and a half. It took Sharpe 20 years to so-called steal $5,000 on the City's credit card. Sooo what if he wanna take a chick on a trip with the City credit card. Let him have that!!!. . .the trade off was worth it.

deelytedammit at 2:44PM on Apr 2nd 2008

14. Remember all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of GOD! Let's keep this man lifted up before the Lord in prayer. May God bless you all and may He have mercy on Mayor Sharpe James.

Concerned Christian at 3:17PM on Apr 2nd 2008

15. It appears to me that white Amerikka establishment is out to criminalize any and all people of color. It originally started with the poor, but now all is fair game. The richest, most popular, and most political the better. Well established people of color is the perfect target for white Amerikka to target for imprisonment -- they are hating on blacks success. This trial is just some more hate bull sh't, while those high paid ass lawyers are getting richer at the expense of all of US! When are we going to wake up to their racist scheme?
