Idris Elba And Beyonce To Play Married Couple In 'Obsessed'

Posted Mar 6th 2008 4:20PM by Wilson Morales
Filed under: It's All Reel

She may not get the same critical exposure like her acting colleagues, but she's certainly getting plum and starring roles. After co-producing and playing Etta James in 'Cadillac Records' for Sony BMG, Beyonce will switch gears and try another genre - thriller.

According to Variety, Beyonce Knowles, Ali Larter and Idris Elba will star in "Obsessed," a thriller that Screen Gems will put into production this summer.

Steve Shill will direct a script by David Loughery. Will ('Stomp The Yard, This Christmas') Packer produces, and Knowles will be exec producer along with her father, Mathew Knowles.

In "Obsessed," Elba will play an asset manager who has a knockout wife (Knowles) and thriving career until a temp office worker (Larter) begins stalking him.

Screen Gems topper Clint Culpepper is finalizing cast deals, working with Knowles' and Larter's reps to iron out scheduling kinks.

Knowles was last seen onscreen in "Dreamgirls," Larter in the Screen Gems films "Resident Evil: Extinction" and "Final Destination," and Elba last appeared in "American Gangster" and 'This Christmas.' He next stars in "Prom Night" for Screen Gems and will appear in BBC film 'The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency' with Jill Scott.

1. Idris Elba is a respected actor and understandably so. Not just 'eye candy' but extremely talented at his craft.

Beyonce is like an icon...a single name entertainer, recognized all over the world, who's beauty, voice and dance skills will be forever etched in the memories of those in her era and beyond. Music lovers appreciate her and all that she's brought to table, regardless...you can't take anything away from her...I believe she's worked hard for the name she's made for herself. I admire what she's done with her career thus far.

I just don't understand why she is willing to place herself in a situation that requires what seems to be more than she's able to give successfully...acting just doesn't appear to be her forte. I'm a little dumbfounded by the decision that was made to place her in this role. I hope it works out better than her previous attempts.

2. Geez! This story has been done to death!!! Just turn on that awful Lifetime network and you'll see this story line or some version thereof once a month.

3. All 'actors' or 'actors in training' only get to BE great over time. Working with Elba and anybody else will give her the practice and on the job training she and anybody else needs. I think she's well on her way to being 'GREAT', but it does take time and she's doing the right thing by taking chances. Plus, did you see that she's executive producing this piece? That alone allows her to choose whomever she wants (even herself) to be the lead. I know I would choose me over somebody else...lolol.

4. The Lord knows that I have never went to a movie starring Beyonce, but I will be sitting in the movie theatre to enjoy this Obsessed feature because it's interesting when creative people put a spin on real life issues, so I hope y'all show love too.

9. Please Beyonce, Don't do this to us. You cannot act. There are so many other things for you to do. Keep singing, keep modeling, keep going EVERYWHERE to have your picture taken, but for Heavens sakes please STOP trying to act. It's just not in you. You gave it a go but it has never worked. But I'm a great fan of your music.

danni at 7:28AM on Mar 10th 2008

11. They could have gotten a better actress to play oppisite Idris Like Gabrielle Union, Janet Jackson,Halle Berry, any number of great actress. I just don't think Beyonce is all that talented so why is she being crammed down our throats.

12. I knew when I read this title there was gonna be haters. Tell me WHY are you sooooo mad at Beyonce? Maybe she actually getting these parts because she works her ass off! We as black people are so busy complaining about she thinks she this, she thinks she that, and it funny because meeting her and spending time with her she is the most humble and sweet person I have ever met. I been around a lot of people in the industry and you all give this girl a bad rap because she is beautiful and because she is talented. She is a hard working girl who has God's favor on her life and because of that alot of you who are unhappy in your own life complain. My advice to you hatrers is to get off your behind and do something for yourselves. I swear if she was had an addiction, falling off, getting pregnant all the time damn near about to lose her career alot of you would be satisfied because you are miserable people. Sorry my opinion

14. Insider,
I will candidly answer your question. This is why I dislike Beyonce.

1.) When she and Destiny's Child first split up and they found new singers, she got on an Atlanta radio show with Porsha Fox and said this: "Oh, I'm so glad we finally have singers who can actually sing." Now that was just down right disrespectful. I guess if they couldn't sing, they would have never been made members of Destiny's Child. Why is Beyonce'dissin these "sisters"?
2.) What about when Latoya, her former Destiny Child's partner who "can't sing" came out with her CD and she rushed to put hers out to sabotage her sales? What's up with that?
3.) Again, the comment she made about Jennifer Hudson when people asked her what she thought about all the accolades she was getting, "If I had wanted the part of Effie, I could have just gained 20 pounds." Look at it anyway you'd like, but she was taking a cheap shot at Jennifer Hudson's weight. What kind of a response is that to that question?
4.) She also made this comment in response to Jennifer Hudson winning an Oscar and not her, "I could easily go and get my 10 Grammy's that I've won." in an effort to say, "How many has Jennifer won? I heard she didn't even invite her to an after party after the Grammys. Why is she hating on this sister whose self-esteem is already questionable? Jennifer said it herself in an press conference, "You have no idea what this does for my confidence." Instead of standing by this sister during her time in the spotlight, Beyonce chose to diss her any chance she got. Beyonce can't stand the fact that the spotlight wasn't on her stuck up a$$ and chose to hate on this woman who did a magnificant job in Dreamgirls. Beyonce thought it was going to be all about her, but it wasn't and it killed her inside so she did everything she could verbally to try and bring Jennifer down. Didn't work. I'm sure seeing her win the Oscar had her on the couch with a gallon of Ben and Jerry's ice cream in tears. I'll be honest, I have never seen Beyonce in a movie because I can't watch people in movies whom I dislike. (God I'd like to see Jennifer in Dreamgirls, but I don't think I could stomach Beyonce for almost two hours)But I've heard from several sources, both professional and the average joe, that she is no Gabrielle Union or Halle Berry. You're asking why people hate on Beyonce? Ask why does Beyonce hate on her "sisters" who are out there trying to make it just like her. She(Beyonce)is beautiful and blessed and has accomplished a lot and should learn to step aside when the spotlight is shining on others because it won't continuously shine on her. If what I have demonstrated is not hate, I don't know what is. Beyonce had better watch out because what goes around quick comes around quicker and she's a snake. Beauty doesn't last forever and once that goes, she dam sure won't be remembered for her lousy acting skills.

danni at 3:26PM on Mar 10th 2008

15. The only movie Bey was good in was Dreamgirls because she did the same thing in the movie to Destiny Child. I think she needs a little more training, maybe doing Broadway like some other singers did to boost their skills in acting. Bey stick to singing and dancing, but wait she cant dance that good no more cause she fell down the steps at a concert she did. Oh well.

I love Idris Elba. I think he is so beautiful and a talented actor.

Hope the movie is good.
