Girlfriends Gone: CW Network Cans Popular Black Sitcom

In an abrupt move that many are saying is an unfortunate result of the Writer's Guild Association strike, the CW Network has pulled the plug on their long-running sitcom 'Girlfriends.'

The show, created by Mara Brock Akil and executive produced by Kelsey Grammer, debuted on the UPN Network on Sept. 11, 2000.

Word came on Monday, Feb 11th, that the network intended to cancel the series without fulfilling its remaining obligation to shoot nine episodes.

The last show aired the day the announcement was made and was actually directed by Tracee Ellis Ross.

Contrary to reports online, there has been no party or celebration of this announcement. Instead, cast members were notified via telephone by Akil that the network had decided to end the show.

'Girlfriends' most recently starred Ross, Golden Brooks, Persia White and Reginald Hayes.

Actor Khalil Kain and actress Keesha Sharp were series regulars on the show.

Khalil KainFormer Dallas Cowboy cheerleader Jill Marie Jones was the fourth 'Girlfriend,' but the actress left the series in the fall of 2006 to pursue other interests.

Her departure from the series just as it was being switched over from the defunct UPN Network to the upstart CW Network caused major controversy for the show.

Jones left the series on her own accord contrary to many online reports speculating that she had been fired.

I interviewed Akil about Jones' departure in August of 2007 and she said, "This is just one of the things that's out of my control. I don't have the control to make an actress come back to work."

Jill Marie JonesThere had been talks of extending an invitation to Jones to return for a series finale, but everything was preliminary according to a network source. Akil conveyed to me during our previous interview that there was an open door for Jones to return if she wished.

I spoke to 'Girlfriends' star Brooks via cell phone today about the cancellation of the show.

"It's bittersweet," she began. "The show has run its course and I feel really blessed to have been a part of a series that made television history."

Mara Brock AkilThe 37-year-old San Francisco native would not elaborate any further about what prompted the cancellation or any of the reports about shows plans prior to. She did concede that she feels the fans deserve a proper finale.

Brooks, who has starred in the films 'Something New' and 'Beauty Shop,' did confirm that she received a telephone call on Monday with the announcement.

With eight seasons under its belt, 'Girlfriend' is one of the longest running African-American sitcoms in the history of television.

Golden BrooksOnly 'The Cosby Show' had been on air as long.

At the 39th Annual NAACP Image Awards on Feb. 14, 'Girlfriends' is nominated for 'Outstanding Comedy Series.'

Ross, Brooks and Hayes are also up for nominations for their acting work on the sitcom.

Requests to the CW Network for comment have not been returned.

In the meantime, outraged fans are letting their voices be heard and are demanding the CW at least shoot a series finale for the show.

********* UPDATED*********

'Girlfriends' executive producer Mara Brock Akil had a statement sent over to me late last evening.

"Although it's always difficult to say goodbye, I choose to focus my energy on the history that Girlfriends has made, the human stories that we told, the beautifully complex images that we projected and the blessings 172 episodes bestowed on us, both personally and professionally. I am immensely thankful to the amazingly talented cast, writers, directors, staff and crew for their endless dedication and hard work for eight seasons, to the network that always wanted us and the studio that always supported us, but mostly to the audience, especially African-American women, who took the time to tune into us every Monday night at nine to have a dialogue with us and who have been our partner in this journey. I am currently in talks with the studio and network on how to best honor and celebrate this landmark show, so please stay tuned," Akil said via e-mail through a 'Girlfriends' publicist.

CW rep Melissa Burton originally issued the following statement on behalf of the network regarding the cancellation.

"The prolonged strike has changed business conditions and our programming strategy for the balance of the 2007/08 season. To better focus its creative and financial resources, The CW will only resume production on shows that are in consideration for renewal next year. As a result, we will not order additional episodes of the long-running comedy, `Girlfriends,' which planned to conclude its 8-year run at the end of this season. This was a very difficult decision for us, and was based solely on the considerable cost to license each episode in an extremely unusual business environment.

The affection, appreciation and respect for the show's accomplishments and the talents of the artists could not be greater. 'Girlfriends' was a landmark comedy that helped anchor important nights for both The CW and UPN, and proved to be one of the most enduring and popular shows in TV history with African-American viewers.

We would like to express our heartfelt thanks for eight great seasons from creator Mara Brock Akil, stars Tracee Ellis Ross, Golden Brooks, Persia White, Jill Marie Jones, Reggie Hayes, Khalil Kain, Keesha Sharp and all the cast, crew and production who have worked on the show. We are in discussions with Mara and the cast to bring closure to the show and its fans with a retrospective special to air this season."

1. I'm going to miss this show. Though the show has not been the same without Toni Childs I continue to watch. Joan, Mya and Lynn were my girlfriends in my head. The least the network could do is give them the proper send off they deserve. Joan needs her dream wedding with her girl Toni by her side. The birth of William and Monica baby these stories need closure. the network would really be doing the fans an injustice by not giving a proper finale.

2. Hopefully they can come up with something similar. I'm tired of being invisible and not seeing anyone that looks like ME when I turn on the tv. It would be nice to have us shown for who we are too. Not a crackhead, not on welfare, not a gangbanger, not the girl with so much attitude and very little sense, not the sex-crazed black girl, not the teen mother, not the woman that hate black men and trying to hold him down roles. Even though some of these things may be real in our lives, we have so much more to contribute.

3. I was sorry to hear that Girlfriends was going off. It was good to have an alternative to watch on t.v. Now what? In the last couple of years I didn't like the fact that Joan and William weren't lawyers anymore but overall the show was good.
But now we have bigger things to do. And that's getting Obama elected. Texas is a State that has a couple of Mega Churches and they may be supporting Hucklebee because he said he was a Pastor. But as for the other people in Texas I hope they go out and support Obama. He has a lot of ideas to turn the country around.

4. This is so crappy on the CW's part. I just wrote all the people mentioned in Jawn's article and hopefully more viewers will follow suit so we can get the finale we deserve. A retrospective is unacceptable.

5. The show monday was so funny I think everyone has grown so as actors, it's a shame that the show will cancel, I'm so tired of watching white teenagers having sex on your so called popular pograms . Thats the type of programs you want to air instead of muture situations with grown people, It's ashame and you should be ashamed of the programs as well. I just hope you don't cancel THE GAME.

6. This is sad and a wake up call for black viewers. If you think about it, all we have is the CW/UPN Network. Monday nights is the only day that I watch Black Sitcoms. Everybody hates Chris, Girlfriends and The Game. They take Girlfriends away and we are down to two black sitcoms.

Think about it, Fox hasn't had black shows since the days of Martin and In Living Color. NBC,ABC and CBS don't have a black sitcom on either. Not ONE! Unexceptionable! CW needs to put something in it's place ASAP! I'm not entertained by The Flavor of Love and all it's ignorance. I want to see quality black programing on a major network.

7. I'M GLAD IT'S OFF.....LET IT DIE!!!...

8. YOU PEOPLE FORGET.....THIS IS STILL THE "W.B."!!!
THE "W.B." DIDN'T HAVE ANY "BLACK SHOW'S"!!!!!!....AND, AS YOU CAN SEE.....THEY DON'T WANT ANY EITHER......
THAT'S "WHITE" AMERICA FOR YA!!!.....

DetroitD69 at 5:27AM on Feb 13th 2008

9. I am saddened this show was cancelled and to think that CW does not consider its viewers and the fact that Girlfriends has won awards in the past and is entitled to a proper farewell. I am not surprised with how the U.S. gives black shows a chance but turns around and lets shows like Earl and Chuck stay on the air. I mean come on give us a break and there are some really great African American actors and actresses out there!!!

NicAK at 8:17AM on Feb 13th 2008

10. Now that the strike is over, they can bring back goorlfriends for a finale. if fans of the show will fight for it then its possible. i think its a great show that showed african american men in women in a positive light that the youth of the world need to see. it was one of the only reasons i watched the CW. IF fans are willing to protest, just like they did for Jericho on CBS, then Girlfriends can get a finale. I say its worth a try.

Just my opinion

11. oh this hurts. i think that this show deserves to have a proper send off. the show really got into a nice flow (u know since jill marie jones left). i can not believe this is how the network will leave this. the fans of this show deserve more. we deserve a proper finale.

Lisa at 11:29AM on Feb 13th 2008

12. I hate to say it but I think it was time to put that show out to pasture. Do they deserve to go out properly with William and Monica having the baby and all.....yes. But after Toni left, so did the laughs. Other than William, these characters just weren't that funny without Toni being involved. I find myself watching the reruns on BET instead of the newer episodes when they come on at the same time. I just sit back and wait for The Game to come on.

LIA at 12:11PM on Feb 13th 2008

13. I wanted to cry when I was texted this awful news of cancellation of my favorite sitcom. Every one of the girls, remind me of someone I knew. No other sitcom can take its place, or popularity. Please respect the actors with a Grand Finale, their fans deserve it also. I never missed an episode.

Nature at 12:35PM on Feb 13th 2008

14. I'm crushed!!!... about Girlfriends' cancellation.
It is a good show and very entertaining.

I, and others like me, are extremely offended by:

1) the lack of much more advance notification of the cancellation (especially to the cast);

2) a proper (series)sign-off.

Is it possible that another (network) could pick up the series?... Spike, Bet, etc??

All the best to all the cast and workers.

Gloria Roper at 12:38PM on Feb 13th 2008

15. They should have ended the show LAST year. When Joan and Arron got enganged, that episode felt like it tied up all the lose ends and was the perfect send off for this show. This year, the show has not been as funny as it has in previous years. After Jill left the show a huge void was left in it, and they should have end it last year. It seems like the creator was spening more time writing "The Game" then on this show. Cause that show is getting better each weekm while "Girlfriends" has not been funny all year long. The CW could have atleast let the writers come up with ONE new show for a proper send off. But hey, thats holly-wood for you.
