Very fast tidbit: the AP reports that a matron at Oprah Winfrey's school for disadvantaged girls in South Africa will stand trial beginning April 21.
Tiny Virginia Makopo, 27 faces several charges in connection to allegations of sexual abuse at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls againt six students and a fellow matron. If you'll remember, Winfrey, the modern-day goddess of media, did the necessary CYA move by sweeping into the school, firing the accused and apologizing to the families of the alleged victims.
But will she be present for the trial? No word on that yet, but it might be ill-advised for her to involve herself in the proceedings of a foreign courtroom unless she is called to testify. If there were a separate suit in which she was named as a defendant fofr negligence it would be a different story, but this is a criminal trial and she is not the accused.
Since her arrest, Makopo has pleaded not guilty to the crime. Whether she is foung guilty or not guilty, this will cast an unfortunate black eye on Oprah's efforts to help children in South Africa.

1. There's a problem with the word "Judged" in this debate. Everyone will decide if Oprah is guilty or innocent. The question is will she be legally responsible for this alleged crime? She set up the school in Africa instead of America. She hand picked the girls. She seperated them from their family support system. She screened the people responsible for running the school. The kids were allegedly violated. It may be legal, but if Jerry Lee Lewis even tried this mess everyone would be up in arms. Oprah won't be "Judged", she will lose the benefit of doubt when it comes to sexual bias issues and race. Isn't that fair? She also better pray there is no video tape. Now the kids have cellphones and direct communications with her. This would be sick if it wasn't someone of Oprah's stature and reputation.
