HIV & AIDS: What Would King Do?

Posted Jan 22nd 2008 2:23AM by Phill Wilson
Filed under: AIDS: 25 Years and Counting

By Phill Wilson, Black AIDS Institute

"An injustice any where is a threat to justice everywhere."
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

I've spent the entire day thinking about Dr. Martin Luther King jr. and wondering if Dr. King were alive today what would he say about the AIDS epidemic in our community. After reading his writings and listening to his speeches I realized I don't have to wonder what Dr. King would have said about AIDS because he said it.

Dr. King said, "An injustice any where is a threat to justice everywhere."

An estimated 600,000 Black people are living with HIV/AIDS in America today. AIDS is the leading cause of death for black women between the ages of 24 and 34. 24 Black people died from AIDS today and another 24 will die from the disease tomorrow. There's an injustice some where.

On December 26, 2007, I wrote about the death of my friend Tom Morgan. The column generated quite a response. A reader name Edith wrote, "The title of this article should be another aids carrying *** bite the dust." I've been trying to figure out how to respond to such a hateful statement. Dr. King came to my rescue this afternoon.

In his 1954 sermon "Rediscovering Lost Values" at Second Baptist Church in Detroit Michigan, Dr King said, "some things are right and some things are wrong-eternally so, absolutely so. It's wrong to hate. It always has been wrong and it always will be wrong! It's wrong in America, its wrong in Germany, its wrong in Russia, its wrong in China! It was wrong in 2000 B.C., and it's wrong in 1954 A.D.! It always has been wrong, and it always will be wrong!

Edith's comment and the comments of some others were hateful and they were wrong. Reading them made me feel ashamed-not because of my HIV status or my sexual orientation, I've felt ashamed because some of us have forgotten what Dr. King stood for, fought for and ultimately died for.

Dr. King's dream was about justice. And, justice can't mean "just us:" no matter how you define "us" because far too many of us end up left behind. In some ways AIDS is a test for Black America. If we are going to have any chance of winning the battle for racial justice, we must win the war against HIV/AIDS. An army ravaged by disease cannot fight. A dead people cannot reap the benefits of a battle won.

Dr. King admonished us about the role each of us has to play in this disease when he said, "We must learn to live together as brothers or we will die together as fools."

Phill Wilson is the founder and CEO of the Black AIDS Institute in Los Angeles . He has been living with HIV for 26 years and full blown AIDS for 15 years.

1. In relation to the complex problem of AIDS, I think Dr. King would be divided. I'm certain that he would want universal health care while he would place the responsibility for not catching or spreading HIV on the community. He would be critical of us for our sexual promiscuity. He would be critical of Magic Johnson for thinking he was invincible. He would be critical of Hollywood for setting a terrible example. He would be critical of the business world for trying to violate our privacy without offering hope of a cure. King would be angry that some would allow our medical privacy to be threatened by business for no good reason. It's not like testing positive for HIV is like hitting the lottery. He'd be against anyone allowing private information to be used in discrimination. King would be moving against our military for routinely testing the military for HIV. It's not a death sentence. King would be busy with other issues like the Constitution and meeting with our Muslim enemies making them friends. King would find Bin Laden to find out what happened on 9-11. How could 20 guys bring America to it's knees without help? Dr. King would be a conspiracy theorist.

2. Dr. King would also be critical of the homosexsexuals for bringing their filthy life style disease into the black community. He would inform the black people that homos were the first to have the disease. He would tell the black people to stop letting the homos blame them for a disease since the homos brought the disease into the community. DR. KING WOULD SAY STOP SAYING THAT THE DISEASE IS THE BLACKS DIRTY SECRET. AIDS WAS ALWAYS BEEN THE THE HOMOS DIRTY LITTLE SECRET CREATED BY THEIR DIRTY FILTHY LIFE STYLE.

4. Stupid people like to cry over spilled milk. Whether or not gays brought HIV to the community or not, is irrellevant at this point. The disease is here, the important question should be how do you deal with it?
Passing judgement never achieved anything.
There are a lot of innocent infected people who all they were guilty of was falling in love & trusting their husband. Making callous, blanket statements like no. 2 are offensive & ignorant at best.

5. First of all, Rev/Dr. Martin Luther King would rebuke people like Cecil Jones and adhere to the standards written in the Bible because he was a Christian man--he knows the work of Satan and those who lie and speak falsely. Make no mistake about that.

MLK would first tell people to stop having premarital sex and spreading disease. But he would also pray for their healing but foremost their salvation. He was a godly man with godly principles.

Secondly, MLK would be too wise to fall for the "universal health care plan" because IT WOULD OVER-TAX AND BURDEN THE AMERICAN CITICIZENS! The US is already trillions of dollars into deficit spending, thanks to Bush!

Hillary's and Edward's "universal health care" is going to tax the American people up to the WAZOO! Every country that has universal health care-- Britain, France, Germany, etc--they all pay outrages taxes. Obama's plan for AFFORDABLE health care is an ingenious idea. Let's face it, if universal health care is offered in this country, every illegal alien (with the taxes paid out of the American's pockets) will suck it down or overload the health care industry, and NO American will have access.

To put it in a nutshell . . . Walking in the life of Jesus Christ, MLK would appeal to our government for affordable health care medicines to help AIDs and HIV victims.

Grammer correction to #5: "IT WOULD OVER-TAX AND BURDEN THE AMERICAN CITIZENS"

WENDY at 1:34PM on Jan 22nd 2008

7. There is not really too much Dr. Martin L. King or anyone else can do about the fight to stop or end this deadly disease. It takes God to give an individual a vision to focus only on a cure for this issue. It takes God to give someone a vision and a goal and all we as healthy entities can do is sit back pray and wait for God to finish handling His business God knows the folks He will use as an example for every knee to bow and every voice to confess that Jesus is Lord. God's word speaks on adultery fornication gay relationships sex before marriage so He is using this disease to open up our eyes to focus on morals marriage celibacy and etc.

9. After checking some statistics at HIVA/AIDS community named

http://www.pozgroup.com, I feel AIDS may be more a disease of black and youth

than a gay disease. You may check these statistics:

An estimated one million people are currently living with HIV in the

United States, with approximately 40,000 new infections occurring each

year.

By race, 54-percent of the new infections in the United States occur

among African Americans, and 64-percent of the new infections in women

occur in Africian American women.Half of all new infections in the

United States occur in people 25 years or younger.

Scott at 9:20PM on Jan 22nd 2008

10. Hey scott, you're white right? Do you know how I knew that? You guys have this inate ability to pick the story right where it's most convenient for you and make it the beginning. Eg. this whole big fallacy that America was "discovered" by Columbus, even though native americans have always owned & live here generations prior to this supposed "discovery."
Are you with me so far? I suspect you are gay too. There is no dispute that aids came from gays, precisely in San Francisco originally. The reason it's rampant now in the Black community is because GAY MEN who happen to be black, refuse to accept it and they have both GAY partners as well as unsuspecting straight women partners. Get it?
Do not confuse (either delibrating or by ignorance) Causes vs symtoms. Cause; down low brother(who typically are high risk) sleeping with women. Symtom: a lot of women die from this ravaging disease.
The stats you stated are the result/symtom, the cause is still GAY MEN. Coopish?

11. He would be more concerned about the prevention, treatment and healthcare...As for him standing in judgement, per his wife he would stand for equal rights for ALL...Guess what that means ? Who would know better than his wife...

Ray Ray at 11:16PM on Jan 22nd 2008

12. God bless you JEN. I am tired of these homos equating their struggle to the black struggle. RAY RAY I know that DR.KING would not have sacrifice his life so that you homos can play in doo-doo. The fact is that your homo disease is killing our people like smallpox wipe out the american indian. YOU HOMOS NEED TO STOP GIVING THE BLACK WOMAN THE DISEASE AND BLAME HER FOR SPREADING IT.

mo power to the people at 1:09AM on Jan 23rd 2008

13. Jen is dead on. It is the same arguement that white folks use when they say "slavery happened years ago, get over it. You were never a slave nor I a slave owner." Let's START now, & work together.
That's all convenient for you but our history did not start NOW. It started from slavery and there are still ramifications of that.
I AM SORRY BUT NOW IS NOT THE BEGINNNING! In as much as you would prefer it to be.

Sue at 1:00PM on Jan 23rd 2008

14. He should have not did that Monkey !

Harry Asmen at 3:18PM on Jan 23rd 2008

15. KING WOULD SAY BE MONOGAMOUS AND MARRY AND STOP THIS WHORING AROUND AND TESTING, AND TAKING TOXIC EXPERIMENTAL MEDS THAT ARE GOING TO KILL YOU A LOT FASTER THAN HIV.
