Aretha Franklin: The Queen on King

Posted Jan 18th 2008 4:44PM by Karu F. Daniels

By Karu F. Daniels, Blackvoices.com

In commemoration of the birthday of late, great civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., The BV Newswire caught up to the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin and ask her to share her thoughts on how his legacy has stood the test of time.

"In celebrating Dr. King's birthday in 2008, we hold to his highest ideals and principles moving forward," she said, adding, "I was especially impressed, as well, with Marty King's interview with Reverend Al Sharpton on Dr. King's birthday and particularly impressed with his vision and his foresight with respect to the movement and where he feels people should be at this time."

"I am sure that Dr. King and Coretta would be absolutely proud of Marty and the way that he is carrying on," Franklin – whom shares a close familial connection to the King family -- continued. "Let us support Marty and be proud with him."

4. It's so great to hear Aretha commenting on Dr. King, especially in these uncertain times. Nice to know there is at least one african american artist that is still passionate about all the hard work that Dr. King and so many others put into achieving equality for all people. As a rumor, I heard that Aretha might be doing something special at her upcoming concert in Los Angeles at the Nokia Theatre. It is really close to Black History Month, after all. Check it out!

5. God Bless you Dr Martin Luther King Jr. You gave so much, and we all, still, have a long way to go. But we are making strides, and progress. And Senator Barack Obama is testimony to that. Your love, spirit, soul and messages are eternal. Your "Dream" will be realized, and soon.
