Blasting The Blogs: Gabrielle Union Speaks Out

Posted Jan 15th 2008 3:58PM by Jawn Murray
Filed under: BV Buzz

Gabrielle Union is fed up with the way she's been portrayed on many of the Black, non-news blogs. The 35-year-old actress was once a fan of many of the online blogs, but once Union began seeing the fictitious accounts of her personal life being "reported" by the blogs, she realized how reckless some of the online portals can be.

"October [2007] was a really bad month for our blogs," the actress began. "It was also the month that I was literally crisscrossing the globe. It was the month that I had where I was not working on a set, where I was lobbying different state legislatures to get more funding for centers and I'm going to all these different breast cancer events all around the country."

The Omaha, Nebraska-bred talent said that she was chastised by the blogs for jet-setting across the country for her charitable causes. Instead of reporting why Union was actually in the various cities, most blogs accused her of becoming a professional party girl. The 'Daddy's Little Girls' star believes the picture painted about her online undermines the seriousness of her philanthropic endeavors.

"Anytime you try to negate my voice and my character and what I stand for, you're squashing all of the good work that I'm trying to do for our community. I'm talking about African-American assault victims, African-American breast cancer statistics. I'm not talking about any other community, I'm talking about us and anytime that you try and attack me and attack my character, you're attacking my voice. If no one else is speaking up about these things then we're shooting ourselves in the foot," she vented.

Union, who most recently starred in the Queen Latifah-produced 'A Perfect Holiday,' recognizes that the attention she's received comes with the territory, however she would still like to see the blogs attempt to use some integrity with the stories they disseminate.Gabrielle Union & Hill Harper on the red carpet

"I almost get to a point where you can say whatever you want to say about me, but print some facts about our community that can help somebody," she explained.

"I don't care because I combat lies. I really used to think that if you read it and you see it and it's in a magazine, a newspaper or you see it on TV, then it has to be true. And it's just not true! I don't even know how to combat that except for do more good things for the people that I care about which is my own community."

Last fall the Neutrogena spokesmodel was the subject of the blogs, a New York gossip column and one of the tabloids, which had her romantically linked to Michael Jordan, actor Hill Harper, and both rapper Ludacris and his manager, Chaka Zulu all in the same week.

"It's sad that people who have that forum where you have all this traffic... If I really did get arrested or stole someone's flipping husband and the wife was calling me, sure. So if I do it, talk about it. I own that, I screwed up. It's never happened! Don't create crap that is negating one of the few voices in our community thatGabrielle Union & ex-husband Chris Howard at the NAACP Image Awards actually likes Black people, loves Black men and is actually trying to do something for our community and make changes. Don't try to kill that voice along with your stories so that you can get a couple of more subscribers. It's just bulls--t and its unfortunate," she concluded.

In May 2001, Union married NFL player Chris Howard of the Jacksonville Jaguars. The couple separated in Nov. 2005 and their divorce was finalized in April 2006.

1. Gabrielle, nothing that is negatively and untruthfully written about you can dismiss all the positive works that you have done. People with whom you have come in contact with during these admirable missions can certainly vouch for that. Unfortunately, the internet has become the number one method of relaying information in America and it's also made it possible to spread numerous rumors without an ounce of truth or resource to back it up...there's even been a couple of celebrities who, according to info on-line had died! That is, until it was later said that it was all just a hoax. At least you haven't become one of the deceased! We live in an era where celebrity-bashing has become one of our greatest pastimes. I'm afraid the business you're in requires you to have really thick skin though it's sort of refreshing to know that even after having been in the spotlight for some time now, you're still very "civilian" sensitive. Keep your head up, girlie. You know who you are...when you rest your head on your pillow at night, that's all that really matters.

3. I commend Gabrielle for being so passionate about all the causes that are dear to her. People will always talk whether good or bad that is their nature. Stay positive and keep doing what your doing,if you need any volunteers for any of your causes in NYC just let me know I will be there. I love our community and want what is best for us as well. God Bless you and good luck in all your endeavors.

4. EVEN IF THIS WERE TRUE, SO WHAT? I WONDER WHO WOULD ACTUALLY HAVE A PROBLEM WITH HER LIFESTYLE. I MEAN REALLY... HOW WOULD SHE EVER BECOME TALK OF MULTIPLE BLOGS TO THE POINT WHERE ITS TOO MUCH FOR HER.PUBLICITY STUNT MAYBE?

KODIACK at 1:21AM on Jan 17th 2008

5. Oh suck it up Gabby. Cry me a river. Just be glad your non talented, typecast ass is even relevant on blogs. When they STOP talking about you.....that's when you need to start worrying.

sha sha at 2:00AM on Jan 17th 2008

6. She's RIGHT. You go down half the blogroll on the right of BV's page (which makes you BV partially responsible) you have irresponsible black folks (mostly women) who have found a great venue to exploit our own and make a few dollars. I maintain that Concreteloop is the ONLY blog that has taken the high road and evolved througout all of this mess. The others are still talking about who's fab and whose not. And whose follywang etc.

The irony in this all is that most of these women have NOTHING to talk about. I think we need to start blogging about the bloggers. Turn the table.

But I'm a karma girl too. Internet traffic is fickle. One minute you are the star and everybody loves you and the next they don't come back. Bloggers have in a way written themeselves into this notarity game. And some (bloggers) don't like the fall out. But everything EVERYTHING has a price.

Thats Why Gabby don't worry. things have a way of taking care of themeselves.

7. Imagine how Obama feels Gabby, but guess what?He sucks it up, so should you. You're in the public eye so you going to get talked about regardless. It's part of territory.Grow up.Live with it.People going to talk. It's life.Move on.Quit yapping and live your life how you want too.

Quit Yappin at 11:10PM on Jan 17th 2008

8. Celebrity gossip is bad news period. I think people need to get a life and stop worrying about the intimate details in the lives of people they don't know and that they'll never meet. I am a blogger, I focus on celebs by writing reviews of their work. That is all.

Louisa at 2:57PM on Jan 18th 2008

9. sha sha, now y should she b glad that blogs r talkin negatively about her, obviously there are more important things on her mind than publicity. i respect Gabrielle Union, she's a rape victim and she made something out of herself, and is an inspiration to all rape victims..more power to her!!!!

Kina at 5:48PM on Jan 18th 2008

10. Dude! Lucky Gabrielle Union to be romantically linked to Michael Jordan! Wow! I love Mike. He is great and a sexy brother!!!

YENLIA at 9:43PM on Jan 18th 2008

12. Well Ms.union is one of our best and it's bad that we as black people stab and pull eachother down and we have to be for one another and Ms.union i hope that you don't hold that on all blacks, there are alot of balcks that are behind you and we need to stop going against on another and work as one, i thought that we would see this now of all times, my god we were in slavery and we have a chance to make a differences and we still have a long ways to go so let's be as one,,

LEVERT37 at 7:40AM on Jan 19th 2008

13. I love Gabrielle Union and no matter what I read, I see a very positive, beautiful, respectable black woman when I see her. I'm proud of everything she does and how truthful she is in interviews. Now, if I could just have a career like hers....

Tracee at 10:37AM on Jan 19th 2008

14. #5 AND#7 YOUR REARKS R STUPID SHE HAS A RIGHT TO BE UPSET THOSE R HER FEELINGS AND SHE HAS A RIGHT TO EXPRESS THEM HOW WOULD U FEEL IF U WERE IN HER SHOES AND NEGATIVE THINGS WERE SAID ABOUT U.WE GET UPSET AND SOME PEOPLE WILL SAY IT'S TRUE WITHOUT GETTING THE FACTS.IT'S ALL JEALOUSY A BLACK TALENTED WOMAN DOING GOOD NOT ON DRUGS NOT DRINKING AND DRIVING.MAKING HER OWN MONEY.DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE HATER'S GABRIELLE U DO YOUR THING.U R VERY POSTIVE ROLE MODEL 4 ALL WOMAN LIKE MY MOM ALLWAYS TELL ME PEOPLE WHO R NEGATIVE LIKE THAT DONT' HAVE A POT TO PISS IN AND A WINDOW TO THROW OUT OF.

VICTORIA at 12:19PM on Jan 19th 2008

15. The days of any publicity is good publicty is long over. Bad talk about a star now can ruin or damper their careers and livelyhood. Stars are used to some talk, but some people are just cruel and harsh now. I have seen way to many bloggers jsut straight up come out with the meanist things they can think of. Just becasue someone is famous, does not give anyone the right to lie about them. It is ashamed now that you cant read a blog wihtout so much venom anymore. People used to disagree, but now it is just way to hatefull. I must be getting old , casue i can still remember when black folks used to talk and not just see who could say the nastiest things they could about people.
