Susan L. Taylor: Speaking Up About "Black Pain"

Posted Jan 13th 2008 12:13AM by Karu F. Daniels

By Karu F. Daniels, Blackvoices.com

"Your harvest awaits, let the healing begin" the former Essence magazine chief concludes in her Foreword of 'Black Pain.' Taylor, who reigned supreme at the helm of the best-selling black women's magazine for the better part of the last three decades, also wrote about how an article in the magazine's June 2006 edition set the stage and broached the issue of African-Americans and depression. "In an overwhelming reaction, thousands of men and women were moved to write to us expressing, not only their admiration of Terrie's courage, but to break their silence and admit that they, too, are struggling with similar issues in their lives. Terrie's remarkable piece sounded the alarm, awakening our consciousness to Black America's deep secret."

2. Hello,

Ms. Taylor,

This issue has got to come to the forefront - we as "black folk" didn't think that we had the diesease call depression. We did'nt think that it could be found in your community or in our household. My son who is no longer with me, suffered from depression. I felt it was time for us to seek help for his depression. We don't reach out to help one another, not even a Good Morning or How are You Doing. Can I help with something/anything. We have gotten away from what is really real and "what God Love".

3. i was 15 years old when my mother die, and i was depress. some people talk about deprssion, how about being 15 alone hungry and depress?

4. We Black people have alot to feel down about but always look to our ancestors and think what they had to deal with, then move on. High powered people like Terry and Susan are dealing with alot of things that most people wouldn't begin to understand. But they all find away to keep going. I know both of them, they are always thinking of other people. I'm sure that helps them in some way deal with their own issues. We have so many great people in our race, God has bless us so much!!!

5. Depression is something that so many ignor but mental issues are real issues and I an glad to know that althought we as a people are human enough to experience it we are resiliant enough to greive, get help and rebound!
Susan L. Taylor is an example of that and makes me proud because she attributed some of that to her Caribbean roots (as I do too).
