Be Your Own Boss -- The Year of the Solopreneur

Posted Dec 27th 2007 12:14PM by Digital Diva

By Brent Leary

Now is the time to take your one-person show to the world

You've been thinking about it for a while now. Yeah, I'm talking to you, the aspiring event planner. You too, would-be financial consultant. And that goes double for you public relations "wanna be." In fact this message is for anyone who has a dream of becoming their own boss while doing what they love. Now is the time to consider taking a shot at becoming a solopreneur, one of the fastest growing segments of the small business community. Better yet, shoot for becoming a world-renowned, international solopreneur.

I say become an international solopreneur because everything's in place for determined, driven, serious folks to compete on a global scale. Here is why 2008 will be "the year" for you.

Each One Reach One....Million
One thing that any "soloist" needs when going into business is to find prospects. This typically means hitting the business networking circuit, and spending lots of time and money on lunches and dinners with prospects, who turn out to be suspects looking for a free meal. A solopreneur has to be especially careful with their time, so it's critical for them to maximize time spent with people who they think would make great customers. And with cheap, high-speed Internet access prevalent, not only can you reach a greater number of people, but you can do so in a more meaningful way. Just as important, you can make it easy for them to reach you. And before you jump in a car or a plane, jump on a Web conference instead to determine if this is business you really want, without having to drive across town to pick up the check before you should.

SaaS to the Rescue
With the infrastructure in place for cheap, worldwide communications, the other factor fueling the rise of the solopreneur is software-as-a-service (SaaS). SaaS has made it possible for solos and other very small businesses to utilize software that would have only been available to the big enterprises just a few short years ago. Marketing, project management, e-commerce and other mission critical software is now easy to use, and easy to pay for on a monthly basis, with no big upfront hardware and/or software costs. Even a virtual PBX professional phone system like, GotVMail, is easily affordable at a few bucks a month.

Plenty of Help for the Do It Yourselfer (DIY)
Back in the day (a year or two ago) it was a pain to create and maintain a Website. Now you can get one up in running in minutes. And it's easy to cut and paste code widgets to keep your site fresh with good information. You can even add a PayPal widget that will allow you to accept payments. You can use a Webcam, along with software such as Adobe's cool Visual Communicator 3 product, to create a professional looking video for your site. And if you do need some help building your site or creating interesting content, you can go to Elance.com or RentACoder.com and put your project up for bid. Chances are you'll find someone who will do the job for what you can afford.

So everything is in place for aspiring solopreneurs. The infrastructure is in place. The software and services are in place. The cost and complexity is steadily decreasing. And the prospects are in place, all over the world. They're looking for what you have to offer. Are you ready to step up to the plate in '08?

3. Thanks Jeffrey and Barb (#1 and #2), I'm taking that step of faith this year. I've been researching, planning, and preparing for years... and am finally ready to make that move. I'd tried before (a few times) and failed, so my confidence level hasn't been too great. But one of my professors once told me that repeated failure with the courage to try again is the spirit of true entrepreneurialship. I encourage anyone who has tried and not yet succeeded to never give up!!! Use the knowledge of what didn't work the last time to make the next time perfection!!!

5. Yes, it is a wonderful way of taking care of business when its your own. I started a very small business of dessert sales. Everyone loved it all, simple to gourmet all made with fresh ingredients from scratch!! I fell ill and had to stop but I am seriously considering doing it again. Its something that I enjoy doing and I'm very good at it. Having your own business is really the way to live.

6. Being your own boss is both rewarding and challenging. I stepped out on Faith and opened my 'Event Planning Service' in June of 2007 officially. I had always been the person that everyone call to organize their party, church function, weddings especially, and so I knew my work was up to par. So, now I am getting paid to do what I love. **The article is very helpful, being a new solopreneur, I am always searching for avenues to promote my business. Great article.

7. Owning your own business, next to buying your own home, is an American Dream.

I am a soloentrepreneur and have been one for ten years now. I agree with Barb B. and the others. It is great being your boss. It changes the whole way you look at the world and how you do critical thinking. It is truly a faith walk. W
ith the Internet, we now have a greater chance of making it. Technology has really leveled the playing field for small and Black businesses.

8. I would love to be my own boss in 2008 but with the credentials in which i retain i have to be thoroughly trained so i can have the know how to be a successful real estate broker /property manager all of this require extensive training. i will like to make 2008 my year of learning how to be successful at these two issues and maybe by the year 2009 into 2010 i can be self employed for reason that working on these jobs here in raleigh-durham, north carolina gives me an eating disorder because they are very jealous when an african american try to succeed. you know they try to bring down northerners when we come down here and try to make us lose everything we came down here with such as jewelry, cars etc. i'm going to see how things work out for me down here in 2008 i am really ready to go back to newark, nj it is something trying to be single and make it down here in the sout. i pray it gets better. bad enough how far the jobs are then you have to go to work around a bunch of unprofessional nonesense.

11. I was so convinced that becoming my own boss and building a future of prosperity was for me that I tried many ventures until I "landed" the perfect match for me. I enjoy sharing my blessings with others who have always dream of doing the same.

One thing for sure, It will benefit you to learn how to determine the right business niches, the ones that are "hot". You want your business to grow, so it is very important to find a "hot" niche to market, whereas your product/services will sell it-self. In other words, your product/services are what people are in desperate need of and will "hunt" you down to experience what you have, so their needs can be met. Now, how great is that for the right niche.

Also, you want to be sure you have the right "mind set". Make sure your desire remain in a "burning phase"...however, if your flame of desire ever "dims" simply bring yourself back to your reasons or Why? for pursuing a business. It could be more family time, work at home around your family, to pay off bills, financial freedom,travel/leisure fun, retirement funds, college funding, fundings for a church mission, the list of why's can go on and on; depending on you/your personal Why?

With the un-reliable stability of jobs these days it is very saddening. Just think, people working a job for over 10,15 or 20 years even and then given "the axe" due to an unfortunate downsizing, or New Administration "take-over" ridding the older staffing to retrain and bring in new employees. There can be so much un-fairness experienced "on the job" Too Low Wages, Little to No Raises, Not enough or No Appreciation...sure you get the "pic".

More and more larger companies are even going out of business, Some can no longer even properly insure their employees due to high insurance cost. There are many new "kinks" kicking up in our Corporate America system every day.

Now if ever, is time to escape and think outside the box to materialize and build your own stable dreams; No longer does it always pay off to build on another's dream...Why not work as hard or smart for yourself and make your dream happen...Surely you are likely NOT to "fire yourself". Again, YOU and only you must develop an enterprenuer "mind-set" for yourself. You can hear others suggest it all day long-but until you have gotten sick and tired of the tiredness...and developed a "burning" desire for the change...Only then will something happen.

~I pray everyone will pursue their dreams in purpose not only in 2008 but in all the years to come. "Pray for Discretion and Wisdom".~

12. It's great to read an article that encourages Black people to start their own businesses. For anyone who is thinking about it, get started by planning the details:

- Who will your customer be and what are their demographics and psychographics?

- What specific market will you target? (It's a great idea to target a niche group.)

- How will you reach the customers in your target market?

- Will you have to hire any staff?

- What are your financial projections for the business? Will you need startup capital?

There's no time like the present to start planning your business. Once the plan is laid out, you should be ready to move forward with your business on a part-time or full-time basis.

Good Luck!

13. I like your strong words of wisdom, Bevel. I think when you are tired, you have no choose but to push forward.

Tammie J at 11:54AM on Jan 18th 2008

14. Starting a business is not only fulfulling a dream for yourself it is also a divine will of God for you.
Although God is not against you working for someone else his perfect will for you is for you to be self employed. When you are self employed you have more control over your life and time.

Don't be afraid to take that leap of faith and explore some kind of business. Ask God to give you the wisdom and the funds that are needed to start a business.

Don't let the lack of funds stop you from starting a business. Start cutting back on some of your other expenses for about a year and plan to start a business before the year 2008 ends. If you are not sure as to what business to start there are plenty of online business ideas that you can research and find out if there is a niche. some of these businesses you can start with very little money if you know how to keep your startup cost down and then learn to keep your overhead low.

You will be surprise at the many business opportunities that you can start with less than $200.00. Just don't quit your job yet while you are growing your business and work hard at it and it will grow. Learn everything you can about running a small business that you can. Make surfing the internet a chore that you have to do everyday. If you want to do this you can however you have to be dedicated to it and put the time and energy in it that it takes to succeed and you can.

If you can dream it you can do it. I have been sitting on a business plan for about 10-years and finally 2008 will be my year. Fear is what separates successful people from those that are afraid to take that leap of faith. Trust in God (or whomever your maker is to you) and ask that he surround you with people that you will need to make your dream business come to life. What you don't know (reach out and ask those who do) you will learn on your journey. Be blessed and believe in your dream. Just do it!!!!
