Dreamgirls: "The Dish, The Dirt & The Divas"

Posted Dec 22nd 2007 12:19AM by Karu F. Daniels

Back Next

Though it seems like eons, the big movie remake of 'Dreamgirls' happened only a year ago. The sensational Bill Condon-helmed flick made a household name out of newcomer Jennifer Hudson (who won an Oscar for her role) and even netted major accolades for co-star Eddie Murphy, who made his dramatic film debut with the anticipated project. But speaking of drama, the film had its fair share: Music megastar Beyonce Knowles wound up not being eligible to be listed as a contender in the Best Song category at the Academy Awards, after virtually being shut out of major acting competitions for a role many thought she was born to portray. On top of that, the legendary Broadway musical's original star Jennifer Holiday felt that she was being snubbed from some of the 'Dreamgirls' glory that she contributed a large part to. Lastly, music legends Smokey Robinson and Diana Ross didn't offer the greatest reaction to the movie when asked about it in interviews; Motown Records founder Berry Gordy publicly disassociated his legacy from the film, which was allegedly based on his storied music empire.

1. Dream,Who. If it isn't broken don't fix it. The way ((MRS. JENNIFER HOLIDAY))was treated i would never look at that B.S. ((I LOVE YOU JENNIFER)))....

3. Jennifer you keep doing what you doing. You are helping alot of us women to shoot for the stars.

4. The remake of Dreamgirls was done in a different era. Anyone associated with the original movie received their accolades then. Its a new day, with new stars. Let's get on with Dreamgirls III - yeah there will be another made in the next 20 years. So then, everyone will forget Jennifer Holiday, and hate on the people that are hating on Jennifer Hudson. It's a cycle!!

5. I saw that mess and I'm sorry but they just gave that award just to be giving to a person of color(no comp), what she did was not Oscar-worthy to me. Now the only thing coming up is for her to portray another "SUPPORTING ROLE" under a non-Oscar winning actress that is not a person of color. Correct me but isn't winning an Oscar not the TOP award you can win for acting. Now LEON (who played DAVID RUFFIN)in THE TEMPTATIONS and Michael Wright (who played EDDIE KANE JR.)in THE FIVE HEARBEATS, those were OSCAR WORTHY roles. I'm waiting on the CD b/c she's certainly NO FANTASIA by a long shot.

JN at 1:06AM on Dec 29th 2007

6. Why is everybody hating on Jennifer Hudson. Obviously she is better than Fantasia because she beat her out of the part. Now what does that say? Exactly. And she deserved to win an oscar award for that. Y'all just hatin because y'all cant sing like her.

sassymama at 7:38PM on Dec 29th 2007

7. I think Jennifer Hudson has done a great job! She must be doing her job well because she got haters! GOOD JOB JENNIFER HUDSON. Keep up the good work. As long as someone is doing better YOU WILL ALWAYS HAVE HATERS!

keisha at 10:42AM on Dec 31st 2007

8. I think we need to support our own actresses and actors. People of color are always putting each other down instead of lifting each other up. There was a time when we were not allowed in these roles. 2008 is a new year lets work on changing our negatives to positives .

Laura Hawkins at 11:39AM on Dec 31st 2007

9. Was there ever a "Dreamgirls" movie? The broadways were wonderful, I take nothing from that but the movie itself was just as wonderful too. I loved it and watched it a thousand times or more. I appreciated all those that played their special roles. You all were great! Even my husband viewed it more than once, now that says a lot!

Daughter at 1:43PM on Dec 31st 2007

10. JN I HAVE 2 AGREE WITH U ABOUT 1 OF UR 2 OPINIONS. THAT'S THAT LEON AND MICHAEL WRIGHT'S PERFORMANCES WERE OF TRU OSCAR WORHTY PERFORMANCES. BUT U CAN'T NO

WAY IN UR RITE MIND EVER SLAM JENNEFER HU

DSONS PERFORMANE. THAT CHICK WILL GO DOWN AS GIVING 1 OF THE GREATEST PERFORMANCES EVER IF SHE NEVER DOES ANOTHER MOVIE. THE SAME IS TRU OF THE 2BEFORE MENTOINED ACTORS. SO DON'T HATE JUST ENJOY SEEING 1 OF THE GREATEST AT WORK. THAT WAS THE PROBLEM WITH A LOT JORDAN HATERS BACK IN THE DAY. THEY DIDN' NO HOW TO APPRECIATE TRUE GREATNESS.

LEE CROSSE at 4:10PM on Dec 31st 2007

11. Jennifer Hudson,I like to wear tight shiny space clothes, ain't Fantasia because she didn't win the American Idol baby. So, pleaze un tighten your weave because it is causing serious brain damage.

Stepping up for the Queen. at 4:15PM on Dec 31st 2007

12. GO JENNIFER DONT LET BEYONCE PUT U DOWN SHE JUST MAD CAUSE U DID A GUD JOB AND SHE DIDNT HATER BUT ANYWAYS..LUV U

13. This is JN stop haten and go graduate from high school

maypo at 11:57PM on Dec 31st 2007

14. Jennifer Holiday is Dreamgirls!!!!!! She amde the play, the song, "I'm not going"...every persons, including Jennifer Hudson, mimcs Jennifer Holiday. I am very glad that she was asked to sing the song on the Academy Awards...Jennifer Holiday is the "Aretha Franklin" for Dreamgirls. I can see possibly consulting Diana Ross.....but Jennifer Holiday made the show and the song. I love you Jennifer. I met you some years back when you were in "Your Arms are To Short to Box with God, and Michael Powell palyed for the show.

Selina Robinson at 9:01PM on Jan 1st 2008

15. I wish everyone the very best. I'm working on my own career so I will never upset the universe by complimenting satan with filth about others, so I will speak blessings upon everyone in the industry and just know that "life is GOD's gift to us, and how we live life is our gift to GOD." Much Love, "Twanna"
