2007: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

All About Usher Dreamgirls Drama

As 2007 comes to a close, I reflect on what an exciting year it has been on the black entertainment news circuit and blogosphere.

From R&B superstar Usher dealing with all of his family drama to 'Grey's Anatomy' star Isaiah Washington getting the pink slip after making gay slurs – of all things. Add to that the scandal of Pentecostal Prophetess Juanita Bynum allegedly being kicked, choked and stomped by her estranged husband Bishop Thomas Weeks III, and that's proof that '07 was a year like no other.

Featuring Jay-Z, Queen Latifah, Karrine Steffans, Kimora Lee Simmons, Sherri Shepherd, T.I., Whitney Houston, Will Packer, Miss New York, Rev. Al Sharpton, Mo'Nique and many others, The BV Newswire takes a candid look at some of the most buzzed about stories that made black entertainment news in 2007.

4. To Vixen599 There was a study done by Thurgood Marshall some years ago before he won Brown vs. Board of Education, and in the study several black children were asked to draw themselves and pick a out a doll from a pool of Black dolls and white dolls. The children in the study left out parts of there body when drawing themselves and almost all picked white doll instead of Black ones. Observing the society as it is today; only missing white children's stories broadcast on the air, while the lives of missing children of color are not reported over the airwaves, added to the deplorable examples of Blacks paraded through the media I find your website just one more example of Justice Marshall's study.

As for the subject matter; why is Isaiah Washington still out of work while Imus is back on the air? Maybe Vixen599 can answer that?

6. As an African-American artist, I do a workshop with African-American children called "In order to be yourself, you must see yourself". In this workshop the kids draw and write about themselves, I am never surprised that they start out from a Eurocentric form of what beauty is. Many of them color themselves far lighter than they are or leave the paper white. They want to bethe young men want to be Basketball and football players, followed by Rappers. The young womwn almost always choose to be singers.
It disturbs me that they clearly know that they want to be these things but have no idea how to navigate through the procdess of becoming. Worse is the spelling and sentence structure when they express these things in words. We have got to reclaim our children or I see a bleak future in 2008

7. I agree with Al Bostick's comments. Not only does 2008 not bode well, but the years to follow. Our young people and seemingly a lot of adults appear to be semi-literate. This is also true among whites, but we all know that it hurts us the most.

How many times do we see apostrophes placed for plurals such as "time's" instead of "times." This is basic English grammar that is learned in grade school. How often do we hear that " I am good" instead of I am doing well, OK or fine. Even more importantly, we don't vote as we should and don't seem to care or know about global, political or economic issues that impact our lives.

8. There is hope for Minister Bynum. Please continue to pray for her and her family in the coming new year of 2008. Those without sin ---cast the first stone.
Pray for all of our leaders and the future presidents of countries throuhout the globe...pray for the world and global warming. pray for your families and families of the world. Continue to give to charities and bless those less fortunate than yourselves. When you give The law of giving returns to you. Not always in money...but in health and other areas of your life. So that is why I say that there is hope for all of our music leaders, economic leaders, in the black community too. God bless you my fellow bloggers in the coming New Year 2008----Its Gonna be Great in 2008! RIVEROFLIFELISAJOY@WORDPRESS.COM

9. Hello, so nice discussion, but NEW YEAR is coming, how to celebrate the nice day? would you love to try something new ? http://interracialsingleonline.com you will be surprised…

siny at 11:29AM on Dec 27th 2007

10. Juanita Bynum deserve the "HOE, GO SIT DOWN" award of the year. That award is usually reserved for strippers who claim to have been felt up & now want $100 million from a star athelete. She need to stop being a media whore & tend to her mental state. She is trying to use this situation to get a cross over audience like T.D. Jakes. I don't think she has ever been featured on 20/20 or any national news program till her husband put his foot in her azz. They may be in it together. I don't put NOTHING past church folks. Can we say MORE MONEY, MORE MONEY, MORE MONEY!

Grace at 11:32AM on Dec 27th 2007

11. Tameka Foster deserve the "Pimp of the year award". If a woman that is closer to 40 than 30yrs old with 3 kids can get a MEGAstar like Usher to marry her than she has some game fo yo azz! Usher was single, rich & has no kids. He could have choose any woman on this earth but Tameka got him to choose her. That is game! Kim Porter need to have a conversation with Tameka. All of these women that are hating can't even get their baby daddies to stay around till the 9 month of pregnacy. How can a woman in her right mind be mad at Tameka. SHE DONE CAME UP! Instead of Star Jones writing a book on how a rich woman loses 200lbs, marries a gay hustler at age 42, Tameka need to write a book on how to marry the man of your dreams even though you are already married, middle age, got 3 kids, and have streth marks. Now that is a book I will by.

Grace at 12:08PM on Dec 27th 2007

12. What I can't believe is that you people seem to forget that men in the world have been beating their women for years. It has been silenty approved among the Christians and non Christians. Men have treated women with contempt since the beginning of time. Christ had said, love your wifes as Christ loved the church and gave up his life for it. That is a tall order. Some men want to pick some things out and leave others in. We are to be help mates, not to walk behind or in front side by side is it. Wake up men.

Ann Wooden at 12:46PM on Dec 27th 2007

13. The study of black children picking the white dolls or coloring themselves white or light, small heads, or short arms have just be done again by a young female. Too many black children are growing up in fatherless households. Many are abused by the mother's lovers. Predominate black schools are inferior compared to schools that are attended by mostly white children Also, many of our Black institutions fail to address these problems, especially the black church. American Blacks cannot wait for God or the white man to solve are problem. Do not ask God to guide your footsteps if you're not willing to move your feet."

steve at 2:56PM on Dec 27th 2007

14. Too much emphasis is put on the insults toward gays and less toward people of color. perhaps it's because I'm black and have for many years, at work, and in public arena's been subject to racism, feel that what Isaiah said may have been inappropriate. But it certainly was not enough for him to be fired. It's just another example of them making a different set of rules for the homosexuals. We cannot even say that we don't condone homosexuality without a firestorm of controversy.

Why is Isaiah the ubly instead of the others? I'll answer that! Because he is black and the person he supposedly insulted is white and gay. I will never watch Grays Anatomy ever again. It was a great program, but I won't support it.
