And the Beat(down) Goes On...

Posted Dec 17th 2007 9:24PM by Madison J. Gray
Filed under: BlackSpin

Back in the day, it seemed like riding public transportation was cheap, fast, efficient and you could get anywhere you wanted in your city without worrying about catching a beatdown -- that is, in a fantasy dreamt up by some dude on mushrooms.

Okay really, for as long as I can remember really riding the bus or subway could mean simply getting from point A to B, or it could mean risking getting jacked on any given day. New Yorkers who ran the public transit gauntlet in the 70s and 80s will feel me as they recall grafitti-strewn subway cars that looked like props from Fort Apache: The Bronx.

So a viral video of a subway attack on New York's 'A' train, taken by a teen filmmaker has brought a new round of voracious anger at black youth, who apparently just can't seem to behave on the train. And it must be said, the kids in this video did look pretty freakin' ignorant as they were wilding out on my man who has since pressed charges against them.

But wait, turn around and head a few hours south and now there are reports of worse attacks in Baltimore where Sarah Kreager (left), a 26-year-old white woman, was allegedly beaten by a group of black middle-schoolers, which was followed a few days later by another bus attack in which two white men were allegedly attacked by a group of black men. Both cases are stoking the racial flames in the town because the first is being investigated as a hate crime, and the second is said by the victims to be racially driven.

It's enough to bring the conservative cavalry out to pounce on urban America once again in the blogosphere and repeatedly on cable news channels with periodic calls for further isolation of minority youths and funding for prisons -- but curiously no calls for more education and recreational funding.

And hey, even those guys make a few fair points about kids wilding out on buses and trains. Yeah, at least on the surface all this seems to be the result of poor parenting, a failed family structure, nonexistant discipline or role models. You know, that "family values" stuff we've been hearing about since the Clinton years.

So man, if everybody is ready to jump down the throats of cavalier black parents and their wayward children, then surely they are willing to pounce on a group of New Yorkers who reportedly got into a fight on the subway over one set of riders wishing the others "Happy Hannukah." In fact, it became an all out free-for-all between Jews, Christians and even a Muslim with chutzpah.

I'm glad nobody was there to say "Happy Kwanzaa."

So, black eyes, broken noses and bruised egos (and knuckles) aside, blaming one group or another might not be a solution. Things like this don't happen very much in public buildings because security plans for them are really tight. Any incident would bring police there within minutes. Public transit on the other hand has violent incidents almost every day because the amount of post-9/11 security afforded for places like the Sears Tower or the Empire State Building is practically non-existent for buses and subways which regular people depend on to get back and forth on a daily basis. That is, except when they want to randomly search your bag, then security is at a peak.

Maybe I'm scared of a butt-kicking on the subway, but I'm more scared of paying for extravagantly priced-gasoline and parking, so that means better security on the subway is a must for those of us who brave the streets for government-run transit.

So the next time I hear about someone getting jumped on the train or the bus, I'll be just as likely to be angry at the people who raise fares for transit while simultaneously cutting funding -- thereby curtailing security-- as I am a bunch of unruly kids.

Then again, I've never seen anybody get smacked upside the head while they were roller skating to work.

1. These Occurrences Are Indeed Saddening. They're Indicative Of Further Deterioration Of Race Relations In America. These Kids Need Better Parenting, Better Education, And A Society That Really Cares About
Them. People Tend To Act Accordingly To How They Are Treated. If You Treat Them Like "Low-Life" Criminals Because Of The Way That They Look (Ethnicity/Age), Or How They Wear Their Clothes; Then, I Suppose That They Probably Will Not Think Kindly Of You And Those That Look Like You!

3.
it is sad when our black males don't have anything to do with their time except jump women, old men, and other children who are defenseless......
the saddest part is their parents are too busy doing other things than spending quality time teaching them how to respect others and to do more meaningful things with their lives .......
when they are arrested for the wrongs that they have done , then the parents want to lock arms with jesse jackson or al sharpton and holler "foul" ........
there was no "foul" while they were causing hell for others who will have to live with the uneventful activities for life ...... s a d !!!

4. It all comes down to home training or lack thereof. Factor in the parents who continually defend their children when they are dead wrong, and the legal system who just slaps them on the wrist and thinks that will "deter" them from committing further offensens and there you have it: muggers, rapists, drug dealers and murderers. And if and when they are finally incarcerated, we have to support them with our tax dollars while they scream and holler about their "right" to watch the Superbowl in the prison "social hall" being infringed upon. Absolutely disgusting!!

5. Little b*stards need to be locked up, their parents need to have their a**es sued off and they ought to be charged as hate criminals. Only low life would blame the victim.

6. All I could think about while reading this was these children need a good, long beating. I am 23, and call me naive, but my parents wouldn't let me walk around subways by myself when I was in middle school. What's really sad, on my college campus, while I was there and even after I have graduated, the neighboring middle school and high school have kids who continue to jump the college kids and beat them down. Just the other day a professor and two students in two seperate incidents were beat with 2 X 4's by high school students, because they "felt like it." You know it's a sad day when it comes down to this.

7. This is ridiculousy...I am a hispanic male age 20 and i know better then to ever do this to anyone. Even when i was between the ages of 15-18 i know what was morally right and wrong. My mother and father taught me better then to go out causing problem. Sure we all do things when we are younger but not like this, that is just plain ignorant. I know if i ever pulled something like this in where i literally beat some one my mother would tear me apart and kick me out and my father would definately give me a beating to teach me a lesson. The parent of these kids need to take control of their kids and give them beatings if not then send them away to a military school of some sort.

8. Wow! the author of this article is so SCARED that this trend will give Society the tools and evidence they need to finally say "We have been quiet, but this generation of Black people are wild", that he is pulling out every excuse in the book.

We are a "Wild" generation period. We IDOLIZE VIOLENCE what do you think will surround us POSITIVITY? We can be such JOKES SOMETIMES, it's getting PATHETIC.

Just Saying at 9:37AM on Dec 20th 2007

9. What needs to happens is the tape from the cameras on the bus need to surface. Everybody is talking about "two sides to the story" I'd like to know exactly what happened.
The children are a little rowdy after school, (not justifying what they did) but I live in Baltimore and we are not what people see on the "Corner" or "The Wire" I think the lady is not as innocent as she claims to be, and she's trying to use this as an opportunity to get help, because she's a homeless junkie.
I Also think the kids should be charged as adults because regardless of how it all started they took it way to far.

11. I ride the train in D.C. on occasion. The young black people, boys and girls are off the chain. They rant, rave, curse, scream and dare anyone to say anything to them. The transit system finally had to intercede. You can ring a buzzer now and hopefully a transit police officer or two will come to the rescue. I am an older black woman. The young people seem to have nothing but distain for older black people. Its sad for me to say, but I too am afraid of these heathens. I'm sure they disrespect their mothers too.

12. hello!where are we as a people have we degenerated to a nation of unruly people that we have forgotten that we all are someones mother, daughter, father etc. that someone loves you or something. what if this happens to your loveone.

13. THIS IS THE KIND OF SHIT THAT MAKES PEOPLE TAKE UP ARMS TO DEFEND THEMSELVES. I'M BLACK, BUT PERSONALLY I WISH THESE VICTIMS WERE ARMED AND ABLE TO CUT OR SHOOT A COUPLE OF THESE DIRTY FUCKERS IN THE CHEST OR HEAD. I KNOW I SOUND RADICAL AND VIOLENT, BUT SO BE IT. IT'S RIDIULOUS THAT CITIZENS CAN'T RIDE PUBLIC TRANSFOR FEAR OF BEING ATTACKED FOR SOME BULLSHIT REASON. I'M NOT A COMPONENT OF VIOLENCE, ALTHOUGH I'M A VIETNAM VET, AND FORMER MARINE WHO DOES NOT OWN ANY TYPE OF WEAPON, I.E. GUN, AUTOMATIC WEAPON OR THE LIKE. I DEFINITELY KNOW HOW TO USE THEM. GOOD LUCK TO THE PEOPLE WHO WERE ASSAULTED. PARENTS OF THE ATTACKERS SHOULD BE JAILED ALONG WITH THEIR VIOLENT ASS OFFSPRING. BUT THAT'S JUST ONE MAN'S OPINION.

TED DONAHUE at 12:37PM on Dec 21st 2007

14. i am a retired bus/light rail train operator. it is not just the black youth that are unruly on public transportation. its everybody. bad manners, rudeness, and just plain ugly acting people come in all colors. i speak from experience, thirty years of experience.

leona d at 12:38PM on Dec 21st 2007

15. I too live in Baltimore, but I'm fortunate enough not to ride the public transit system here. While both sides of this seemingly open and shut case have suggested that the other was at fault, the surveillance tape must surface to get the whole truth. Just as these despicable acts of violence occur, there is a larger social issue at hand. How often have we read in these blogs how we (adults) were different, had better values and morales, respected adults, etc. etc.? Far too often! Yeah, we know the youth are angry, frustrated, and misguided but so were alto of the adults today, the deffierence is, back then, there were other opportunities for young people, there were places kids can go and be safe, there were programs intact that address the growing concerns of young people. Where are those programs now? I know the exist, but they are few and far in between. So who do I really blame foe the state of our current youth? I blame us "grown ups" we've let our youth down. Many of us have gotten so absorbed into our own littel world that we've forgotten to be inspirations to our future great minds. We're so caught up on material gains that our spiritual conscious has been severely blocked and we can't see beyond our own ignorance. So it's time to WAKE UP!!!!
