Maya Angelou Endorses Hillary Clinton

Posted Dec 12th 2007 2:00PM by Denver Louis
Filed under: BlackSpin

With Oprah's endorsement of Barack Obama, or the "Oprah Effect" as some call it, getting all the buzz lately, Hillary Clinton's campaign recently made a counter move with an endorsement from one of America's most beloved writers, Maya Angelou.

The award-winning poet is featured in a new South Carolina radio ad in which she calls Clinton, "my girl." In the 60 second ad, which appears only within the state, Angelou says, "I am inspired by Hillary Clinton - a daughter, a wife, a mother. My girl."

She continues saying, "Each generation of African-Americans stands on the shoulders of those who came before," Angelou says in the ad. "Today, the challenges facing us threaten the dreams we have had for our children. We need a president with the experience and strength to meet those challenges."

Despite her relationship with Oprah, Angelou's friendship with Hillary dates back to when former president Bill Clinton was still senator of Arkansas. Angelou was also the poet for Bill's 1993 inauguration address.

The ad started circulating at the same time as the Sunday rally of more than 29,000 at Williams-Brice Stadium in South Carolina for Barack Obama, prominently featuring Oprah and other celebrities.

At this point in the campaign trail, the competition seems to have veered away from all those important issues and right now appears to be a game of "who can attract the bigger names."

So in case you were wondering, so far, notable celebrity campaign endorsements for Hillary include, actor Barbera Streisand, Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Madonna and of course, rapper 50 cent.

While Obama is backed by George Clooney, Eddie Murphy, Steven Spielberg, Jennifer Aniston, to name just a few and of course the all mighty "Oprah Effect".

With it being chic to publicly endorse the democratic front-runners and all these celebrities voicing their support, the question is, how much do these endorsements really influence the voting public?

1. Will Smith also endorses Obama, he is another heavy hitter whose endorsement is about as important as Oprah's. So that is a 1,2 punch for Barack Obama.

2. Maya Angelou's Endorsement Of Hillary Clinton Shouldn't Be A Surprise To Anyone. Maya's Friendship With The Clintons Goes Way Back. This Is Maya Angelou's Personal Belief And One That She Is Entitled To. Though Some May Disagree, Our Support Of A Presidential Candidate (Or Any Candidate For Public Office) Should Be Based Upon *"The Content Of Their Character, Not The Color Of Their Skin".

3. With all due respect to Maya Angelou and Oprah, I've seen this battle before. The game is "Divide to Conquer", but it's different due to the players in this game. I respect Maya's opinion and advice far more that I do Oprah's, but why are Democrats divided on the porch of history? Democrats have won the last two election in spirit, yet our wishes have not been reflected in the official vote count. Why can't Maya and Oprah join the effort that brought us to this point in history? Hillary sat out in 2004 because she believed President Bush was unbeatable. That's not leadership or courage. Obama doesn't have the experience and the wrong Black man could set us back in the struggle. If Oprah had just backed Kerry-Edwards in 2004, we wouldn't be so divided. Bill and Hillary are running for the wrong reasons-ego. The race would be over if Hillary reached out to Obama to unite, but Hillary will never take a Black VP. As Obama's popularity swells, he might not accept the VP as a victory for us all. I've thought about all these options and that's why I'm for Edwards. John fought for us in 2004, he has a coalition of the poor behind him, and he is for us. We've had his ear since 2004, but Oprah just didn't know it. If she had endorsed the team in 2004, it would be our time. If we had the courage to ask Bill to step down, Al Gore would have been for us the last 10 years. We can only blame ourselves for not thinking. Will you think about it now? Support Edwards and don't frown at the VP selection. That's a huge step forward for Blacks. It's something to truly celebrate. It would give us time to evaluate Obama.

4. "Each generation of African Americans stands on the shoulders of those who came before." Huh? Each generation also defines itself and shapes the future according to newly found ideals and realities. Okay, so Miss Angelou recited a poem at Bill Clinton's inauguration, and was Poet Laureate of the U.S. Ergo, Hillary is her girl. What about her helping to send nearly 4,000 Americans to early graves in an immoral, unGodly, tragic war? The singlemost important decision of her political life and she got it wrong. Bad judgement is bad judgement, and that trumps everything. I'd like to know how Miss Angelou "really" feels.

I watched her grandmotherly piety in a one on one with Dave Chapelle, shaming him about his use of the N word, and lecturing about slavery and discussing her experience with Tupac, and how she brought him to tears for some indiscretion or another. Why we do this all the time. Why are so many of the older generation, so many of the so called vanguard civil rights honchos bailing out undercutting the very foundation upon which civil rights and equal opportunity were based upon. Andy Young so much as said that Obama is not scarred enough to be president. Is there jealousy in the land? If not him, then whom? If not now, then when? There have been plenty of opportunities for other African-Americans, or Latinos, or Asians to run for the presidency. He stepped up to meet the challenge, recognizing that he was doing it on the shoulders of all those who came before him.

So to see so many members of the Black Caucus, and other Civil Rights personalities backing Hillary because she has inherited Bill Clinton's stardust really makes my blood boil, especially since Obama has the whole package and we should all be passionately in his corner.

5. Hillary, Jesse, and the most Dems can care less about us. For years they have held us back with their entitlement policies. Now they are in trouble because we as people are finally using our heads.

jj at 9:37PM on Dec 12th 2007

6. I see this election is becoming very sensitive to many of us, almost down right dirty. Listen people, let's not get to carry away on endorsements and the like. Clearly, Obama and Hilary are great candidates and either one well surely represent the democratic party well. The real election is in November 2008, the general election. Our focus should definitely be on the big picture.

Personally, I love what Obama is doing and I think he could be a great president. He is very intelligent, (unlike to fool we have now and certainly better than anyone on the other side of the aisle), charismatic, a proven leader, and someone I believe will always have the nation's total interest at heart. Clinton, on the other hand, is equally knowledgeable, posess great leadership qualities, and certainly able to give great direction with a little more experience and respect in Washington.

This will be a very hard decision for democratic nomation and whomever we chose, we have to rally behind and convince the American public that they deserve the nation's nod.

Stop all of this foolishness about bullcrap.

Peace

8. You know, I listen and read the campaigning statements of all of the candidates and I must say we really have more of a variety of choses to choose from that usual. We have a female candidate, a black candidate, a Mormon, I will stop right there. The reason that I am stopping there is because history is being made in a way that we knew would someday be. Our country has been brought to a place of actually electing a female president, a black president, and the question of having to deal with a religious belief in our commander in chief that has a history of paganism or occultism. Our country is in transition. I just hope that there is a real ironside in whomever is elected. This is no game, Our country needs leadership that abounds not only in what goes on within our country, but we need to send a message from our country to the surrounding countries that we are a country that is watching and doing circumspectly the things that keep us strong as a nation. Its okay to fight from within, it inevitable, but we don't need to let our guard down ever. My mom used to take a nod sometime in her chair. We would think that she was asleep. But she always could see when we were up to something or when we were trying to get away with something that wasn't quite right. I used to wonder, how did she know what was going on? The truth was that she was really asleep, she just appeared to be. I hope that our nation is not asleep.

9. If you were selected to help deliver a message or help free the minds of your people, how would you do it? Television would reject you because they control mass media and the content of the message. Stars would attack you because you think differently and you would be viewed as "Less Worthy" than they. Politicians would steal blindly from you because your message would be powerful enough to begin a movement. Anyone can be selected by God to serve, but how many of us would? This world is too wrapped up with it's own comfort and convenience. Would you make the sacrifice for something greater? Is it "Crazy" to believe in the voices of our ancestors? Is Obama the one? Is Al Sharpton? Is Maya, Oprah, or anyone you can think of currently the one? What would make one special enough for you to believe? Would they need to walk on water? Would they need the power to produce a miracle? What is faith? Do you believe in a love that would permit you to accomplish anything because they love you unconditionally? What would you try to do if you knew they were with you? If I were the one, I'd remember all the hate is not about me. They do bad things to messengers, but someone's got to do it.

10. Nobody knows the real politician. Thay are all good candidates probably. It seems people in here like the idea of obama for presient but not many seem to know why.If I vote for him because he is black , does that make me a racist?

brian at 6:31AM on Dec 13th 2007

11. Two beautiful, intelligent african-american women, both entitled to their own opinion on the selection of a democratic candidate. Personally, as an Independant voter, I did vote for Bill Clinton, but one Clinton is enough. Regardless of the fact that in her own way, she is obviously a strong woman, I don't need her ruling the country and I am NOT charmed or impressed by her as a candidate in the least. I would select a female candidate, if I thought HER to be a true leader. She's just Bill's wife to me...no disrespect intended. Between Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Obama, BARACK OBAMA DEFINITELY IS MY CHOICE.

Rita at 6:36AM on Dec 13th 2007

12. Brian.
To address your "interesting" comments. If you don't know whether you are a racist or not, no one can tell you, because no one is in your head. First of all, how do you know what people on here know about Obama? Are you a mind reader? Obviously, you don't have an opinion at all, since you are asking the question. So here is a counter question. (and I don't know YOUR race) If a white person votes for a white candidate that he or she knows very little about, does that make he or she...a racist? Happy Holidays.

Rita at 6:45AM on Dec 13th 2007

13. You people kill me, typing about Obama don't have the experience. What a stupid statement. Just take a look at our country, yes the USA, just look at it. Now ask yourself did any of the presidents, congress, or any other government officals had or have experience? If you answer yes, you are seriously stupid. This country is in worst shape than ever before. With all do respect Maya, mother, you need to get away from the Clintons.

Obama will be the best president. He cares about the people. You can feel it in his energy and you can see it in this eyes. When you care about someone or something, you will see that it grows.

Yall people walk up!

The frist step is Self - Respect, the protect of your women. The one who teach your children. So if she thinks she ho, what does make your son a pimp. The Polls are trap to keep not focus on how to solve our problems. The love our Lord will see us thruogh.
