Steve Harvey: Divorce Drama is No Laughing Matter

Posted Dec 7th 2007 9:09PM by Karu F. Daniels

One of black America's funniest men is embroiled in a messy alimony scandal -- and it's no laughing matter.

The ex-wife of Steve Harvey, the nationally syndicated radio personality also known as one of 'The Original Kings of Comedy,' is crying foul for being duped into signing away her rights to his hefty fortune in a shady divorce deal.

Mary Lee Harvey (pictured right with the comic during happier times) is claiming that she was conned into a quickie separation of marriage devised by the entertainer and his attorney, Ricky Anderson -- who allegedly sought to keep private details about the comic's adultery, poor and neglectful parenting, and "physical and mental abuse" of his ex-spouse.

According to documents made available at TheSmokingGun.com, the former Mrs. Harvey filed a lawsuit on Nov. 20 claiming that she was defrauded by the comedian and the couple's longtime attorney, who represented both sides in the November 2005 proceedings.Talk about a raw deal.

The result was her being unaware of her rights to independent counsel and being severely shortchanged when it came to alimony, division of community property, and child support – which amounts to a paltry monthly payment of $1,000 for the couple's son.

Meanwhile Harvey, who hosted the nationally syndicated variety show 'Showtime at the Apollo' and fronted other TV shows throughout the years, is living happily ever after with another woman, Majorie Bridges (pictured left in July during the 2007 Essence Music Festival).

The couple reportedly married during a family vacation to Hawaii.

Known to be highly outspoken about a number of subjects, the usually loud and proud member of the Omega Psi Phi black fraternity is surprisingly remaining mum about this dud of an alimony deal.

Elivra Guzman, a former radio station intern turned personal publicist for Harvey, didn't immediately respond to queries seeking comment from him.

When probed for a response, the flak retorted, "I am very nice person and I show everyone respect ... I do not understand why you continue to disrespect me and give me times lines."

To add injury to insult, she added: "I will simply not work with you if you continue to display this type of attitude."

Harvey, who is involved with a great and exciting community initiative with Walt Disney World Resorts (Disney Dreamers Academy), should be saying the same thing about her.

1. Wow! I didn't know that Steve and his wife were divorced. But if it is true that he mentally and physically abused her, and cheated on her and was a bad parent and now he has schemed her to keep her and their son from getting their due share, then I hope that she gets a good attorney and go after him with a vengance and make him pay for all his misdeeds. I really thought more highly of Steve than this, and now this makes me see him in a different way. He ought to be ashamed of himself.

2. He had to marry her for love. She sure does not have looks. I don't believe he is just giving a grand a month. Then what do I know? If he is, he probably is giving so much to the child directly, but she is getting a grand in cash. If it is not enuff, then go get some more from the courts. He surely has it. Maybe it is for cosmetic surgery. Who knows?

3. Steve should really be ashamed of himself. It is so sad to see what has happened to the most outspoken and so-called honest black men we have in the biz. First of all you should definately stick with the sista who stood beside you when you were up and coming, not cheat and abuse the one that had your back. Secondly your child lived on i'm sure more than a grand a month when you were with his mother, know all of a sudden thats all he's worth to you.If u ask me Mr. Harvey is just as worst as those brothers who get a lil money and clout, then leave their black queen for a white woman. Its sad, but true, don't get me wrong i'm not judging the man cause it can all be heresay, whatever went on with his ex-wife but its still wrong, u can't put a price on raising your children.

4. There is no way Mary Lee could be so ignorant to think that she could not get legal representation for herself. It is apparent that she is jealous of Steve's new marriage and is now seeking revenge. She has seen where these women are getting divorces and getting paid. Something about this just is not right. Evenmore, she just can not be that ignorant. I listen to Steve's show and base on the thing I hear and my gut feeling, this is just some bull!

5. I HOPE STEVE GET WHAT ARE COMING TO HIM HE MAKES ME SICK.HE ALWAY HAVE ACT LIKE HE WAS BETTER THAN OTHER PEOPLE

SHEILA at 6:21AM on Dec 8th 2007

6. PLEASE, I HOPE & PRAY THAT THIS IS NOT TRUE, I REALY LIKE STEVE & HAVE SUPPORTED HIM IN THE PAST. I WILL NOT JUDGE HIM, BUT (MAN UP)STEVE PLEASE SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT FOR ALL YOUR LOYAL FANS.....

7. I am sick of these men loving women until THEY get enough and then they tell you they don't love you anymore. It is not right! You stick with them, love them, have their children and your body gets all out of proportion, sacrifice and support them and when another woman passes their way, they dump you without looking back. They gripe about committment but then within months, they marry another woman. All the while, the former wife (in a lot of cases) is left confined and raising his kids! He is out enjoying life with another woman and wouldn't it be down right messed up if the other woman has kids? WHy leave your own family to live with another man kids? And, it is harder for the former wife to get someone else because a man will be reluctant to take a wife with kids. Steve, your time will come. Be not deceived, you will reap what you have sown - that is God's promise. Give your wife more for hurting her and give your son what he is entitled to.

8. If everything in the article is true...I am just disgusted with Steve Harvey. Now, he is married again. He isn't giving anything but $1000. Is he serious? That ring that's on his new wife's finger is worth way more than that. What about his son. He should allow his son to have the life that he deserves given the fact that his father can afford to give it to him. Lastly, even if he is done with his first wife, he didn't have to disrespect her in that way. I feel like he should have enough respect for "his" family to keep them living comfortably.

9. NONE OF US KNOWS ALL THERE IS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS PARTICULAR CASE,BUT WE ARE SO DAMN QUICK TO RUSH TO JUDGEMENT! SHAME ON US.WE HAD BETTER TAKE CARE OF OUR OWN AND QUIT WORRYING ABOUT THEM!!!

MRRUSSELL at 9:35AM on Dec 8th 2007

10. WHAT DOES HIS PERSONA AND HER LOOKS HAVE TO DO WITH ANYTHING??

MRRUSSELL at 9:35AM on Dec 8th 2007

11. On the surface it would appear that Mr. Harvey duped his wife into a bad deal, however because we do not have all of the information available to us, nor do we have access to their private lives we'll just have to see this thing play out before our eyes.

Rodger E. Smith at 11:05AM on Dec 8th 2007

12. You cant win, first they complain about a brother
not paying child support, and ther are many,1000 from
Steve and at least 500 from mom.

Al at 11:10AM on Dec 8th 2007

13. Steve Harvey should be ashamed of his self, a thousand a month is hardly anything that his wife has been accustomed too, yet alone his son, oh the tangled web we weave, when he was a nobody she was there supporting him along the way which counts for much, the alleged abuse counts for more than Steves jokes, and the birth of a child well...priceless!!!

Get your sh*& together Steve, your not funny and the joke is really on you in the end, there is nothing more precious than your child and how he perceives you in the end. May you find peace with your creator.

Sparkles at 11:34AM on Dec 8th 2007

14. Come on now people! Why is everyone worried about him when there are more important things in the world to be worried about! I think that she knew that she could get independent counsel.

But regardless, she is getting $1000 a month for her son by court order, yet we do not know what else he is giving outside of that. And if you ever listen to his radio show, although he never directly admits that he was abusive, he does often discuss his shortcomings in that marriage and his shortcomings as a father at that time. He also discusses how getting back into his religious roots has helped him mature and become a better man.

Everyone is so quick to judge, sometimes we need to just listen!

MO at 12:02PM on Dec 8th 2007

15. no! steve do not have very good taste in women,
and the second wife do not seem to look much
better, but i don't want to thank that the most
funnyest man i know is being that cheap. plus
he has confessed being a semi christain, that
means he has atleast got a heart. steve, if
this true you may want to re think this thing
over and give up a little more cash to wife #1
and incase there is ever a #3 let her be a
christain women and act and LOOK the part. you
still are the funnest man alive and then some.
