Jena Six Case Heads to Washington Amid Hateful Backlash

Posted Sep 24th 2007 4:58PM by Jeff Douglas
Filed under: BlackSpin

The parents of Jena Six teen Mychal Bell and The Rev. Al Sharpton will meet with House Judiciary Chair Congressman John Conyers Tuesday to ask for federal hearings and intervention.

Last week, Conyers, an African American Democrat, said he would hold congressional hearings on the case.

"There should not even be allegations of unequal justice based on race or any other factors. This case brings to light what could be a national trend and the Judiciary Committee should explore that," Conyers said.

Sharpton has also called for Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco to have state police investigate threats being made against the Jena Six families.

The families have been bombarded with death threats after a white supremacist Web site allegedly published their addresses and phone numbers. The FBI is investigating the posting. Sharpton said some of the families have received almost around the clock harassment.

According to a news release from Sharpton, Bell's attorneys are pursuing his immediate release after a judge last week to refused to release him, despite having his conviction overturned by a higher court earlier this month.

Bell has been in jail the entire year, unable to meet his $90,000 bond.

The backlash has not been limited to threats against the Jean Six families. There's
a report of noose-hanging copy cats in North Carolina. And not long after the rally on Thursday, two men were arrested outside of Jena who were seen driving a pickup with two nooses hanging off the back. One man was charged with inciting a riot.

Meanwhile, The Associated Press ran a piece Monday that sought to clear up some facts surrounding the Jena Six case that have been misreported by the media at large, among the items the AP pointed out:

_The so-called "white tree" at Jena High was congregated by both black and white students at one time or another, according to teachers and school administrators. (However, some black students have argued this fact.)

_ Two nooses, not three, were found dangling from the tree last year. (Does it matter if there were two or 20?)

_The three white youths accused of hanging the nooses were suspended for three days, then they were isolated at an alternative school for about a month, and then given an in-school suspension for two weeks. (However, the police were never called and a report was never made.)

1. What a shame that there is hatred in america the richest country there is. I and my was in Jena about this time a year ago. I and my wife are from Canada a year ago we came through that small town we stoped to get gas and was greated with boy what do you want they oh you are from Canada then damnI did not know that there was black peopel in Canada. And whoever heard of black people in Canada. Ignorance and racisem goes hand in hand. Rednecks poor white trash white people what ever you want to call them are verry ignorant they are not scared of us they are scared that they might actually learn something from us. Yes some day they will be singing we shell over come but it will be to late we are praying for the Jena 6

2. My prayers are with Jena 6 and all of the children who I have seen in the news recently affected by racism and being unfairly treated my the justice system. While we have come a long way as African Americans I believe that cases like this should give us a reality check that there is still a ways to go!! My prayers are with all of the families black and white affected by this as well as all of the people in the town in Louisiana.

3. This is no surprise to me. I have been saying for years that the civil rights movement did change law inabling African-Americans with human rights freedoms it has not changed the way they look at us. I am a black american descendant of slaves and once it is recognized that we are still labled as second class citizen with the world puting every other race above us along with arabs. Our culture was stolen and our ancestors are waiting on us to realize that we need to take it back. Coming from the new generation of blacks I hope the kkk knows that everyone born after the sixties don't take no shhhh..t. I come from a generation that wishes the kkk would come out and be seen. I dare you!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is exactly why those boys whooped on them. Generation X don't take kindly to openly racist activity. We're not use to it and never will be use to it. Black people are human beings not slaves not animals and if your jealous of color buy tanning lotion. Put on black makeup. Love us or leave us. To all white people that don't like us too bad.Your ancestors shouldn't kidnapped us, you should have known you can't hold a whole race of people down. God will always set the captive free. Ya'll Baadd (a little black slang)

4. I became aware that racism is still alive during my life time when I learned of the story of "the 14 year old boy in the south who was murdered because it was said that he looked a white woman." Racism is a sickness that spreads like wild fire!!! The Jena Six teen is facing a very hard trial, and is my sincerest wishes that justice is continued to be sought and eventually found. I can not be there physically but my spirit is in the mix with Rev. Al Sharpton. Peace

6. I mean, is this the best you can come up with? Compare it to the little publicized:

Channon Christian, 21, and her boyfriend, Christopher Newsom, 23, both of whom were white, were kidnapped, beaten, tortured and murdered in early January.
The four suspects charged in connection with the crime are black. They are Vanessa Coleman, 19; Letalvis "Rome" Cobbins, 24 and his brother, Lemaricus "Slim" Davidson, 25; and George "Detroit" Thomas, 24.

7. This is wrong I am not a predjudice person but we all know if this situation were reversed Rev Sharpton would not stop untill the "white" person was tried & hung he would not go to congress for lieniency When is everyong going to wake up & realize its not a black & white thing unless the blacks make it a black & white thing.

Pat at 2:45PM on Sep 25th 2007

8. @ Pat: Are you kidding me? First of all you're talking about a "what if" and the reality is bad enough already. Deal with reality instead of throwing up a "what if" smokescreen. The reality is that these people have all but screamed "we hate black people just because of their skin color". Don't try to sweep the truth under the rug and reverse psychology by pointing fingers at the victim.
Have you read your bible? Do you not know that we all came from the same man and woman and therefore you and no one else is better than the other so there is absolutely no basis for any unequal treatment or mistreatment based on color? Do you not know that God condemns hate because he is the total and complete opposite -- love?

9. I support the young man's family in trying to get him released but I'm just wondering why so much hype from all the celebrities, Al Sharpton, and all the masses of people marching and protesting about this one situation in one place when it is going on all over the U. S. and only select situations are addressed. I really do not understand why only certain instances of discrimination and racism constitute a national awareness of a continuing problem. I and other blacks fight racism on a daily basis in Kentucky and other smaller states, but it does not get national attention.
Please attune me as to what one has to do in order to bbring national leaders and celebrities to Kentucky, one of the most racist states in this country.
What about the older, black citizens being mistreated and abused in nursing homes and living in inhumane conditions, young black children taken from their families at a higher rate than whites that are being abused in foster homes, young, black women being abused and misused by their own black men and white men (have we forgotten what happened in W. Virginia, and young and old black men that are struggling everyday trying to make ends meet to support their familes. There are all kinds of injustices in this country that need immediate attention. So let's expand the support to other states and be more inclusive in giving out support.

Wanda Davis at 3:25PM on Sep 25th 2007

10. What about that young black woman that was kidnapped and tortured for a week by them 8 white guys? Why isn't anyone bringing that up???

murdoc6tray at 3:31PM on Sep 25th 2007

11. Just wanted to say that it is a sad thing but no matter what the judge says God has the power to over turn any verdict . We need to be taking this time to pray for the Jena Six as well for the country , and the lost souls . I feel that once all the cares be casted unto the Lord then he will stop in.It is good that people are trying to help but God is waiting for the hatred between the races to stop .Then he will step in and settle this thing .When they are cleared and the last one set free we need to remeber that GOD DID IT and not man .No one can take credit for what God is going to do in this matter.I pray for the families and may the blood of Jesus cover them all the days of their lives .

Rena at 3:53PM on Sep 25th 2007

12. Do your part and teach children not to resort to violence to settle a disagreement. Violence is NOT the answer.

Nottafan at 4:01PM on Sep 25th 2007

13. Okay. Back to basics people. Let us all read "The Isis Papers" by Dr. Cress Welsing, get a good understanding of what is going on. Then instead of complaining and having an opinion, we could use this energy to solve the problem. We are so distracted by the effects of racism, that we lose sight of the root cause. We cannot go around with band aids for Katrina, Jena 6, the young woman in VA, or pick one. (there are many) When we begin to understand and try to solve the problem, then can there be a move towards justice and peace on the planet.

cheryl girl at 4:04PM on Sep 25th 2007

14. MAY THE PEACE OF GOD'S LOVE AND GUIDENCE CONTINUE TO RULE OVER THE JENA SIX AND THEIR FAMILIES, AND ALL OF US THOUGHOUT THIS VERY TRAGIC RACIAL INJUSTICE AND FOREVER!!

LET US ALL CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR THEM, AND FOR EACH OTHER.

PEACE AND BLESSINGS TO EVERYONE

15. Wake Up America , can't you see what's happening ; The enemy of us all is trying to keep us seperated from each other as to divide and conquer . He could'nt do it from the outside so he changed his tactics , trying to destroy from within . As long as Americans are together and support one another although we may dissagree , we are the strongest nation on earth , but when we begin to doubt whether one or another part of this great society is true to the keeping of the liberties , that we all should enjoy , according to our great Constitution , then comes mistrust , and mistrust brings about suspicion , suspicion brings about seperation , and " a house divided against itself cannot stand " so black America let us hold Al Sharpton accountable for his antics , good or bad , and let him know that we will hold him accountable for anything that he dose to seperate us ( Americans ). White Americans let us hold those that use our court systems to carry out any feelings of seperiorty , or showing partiality towards any race of people , whether we agree with their life styles or not . I think we could solve all our race problems if we would just love one another , " For we all have sinned and come short of the glory of God " . Let's give the same type love that God has shown on this great nation , we have not been that good , look back on history , there are some things that wre have done that makes us exempt of the prosperity that we are blessed with . I pray that we as Americans can work toward a unified America , for the good of the nation and the world . God bless America , as America bless God , " When you do it to the least of these little ones , you have done it to Me " God First , Let God be the truth , and every man be a lie .
