Diane Da Costa: Author and Celebrity Stylist

Posted Sep 20th 2007 10:56PM by Diane Da Costa

Perhaps you've seen my interview on AOL Stylelist? Or read BV's article on Lace Front Wigs, where I lend my expertise? or maybe not! Either way, I have many mentors and friends that I turn to for my advice in this business, so whatever I don't know, I can surely get the answers.

Use this blog to create dialog in a positive way -- to stay informed, educate yourselves about all hair textures and products, celebrity trends, who's who and who's doing what in the hair game. Lies and Truths. Learn about yourselves, as people of color. How beautiful you really are, with all your soft waves, curly, coarse and tightly coiled hair - your crowning glory! And most importantly, share some LUV once in a while. It's so easy to hate. Try flipping it for a change! Remember: "Textured Hair is Beautiful Hair!"

So, now that you know a little bit about moi... I'm going to give you a chance to get all your questions in -- right here!... Once a month, I'll feature around five or so of the best questions and/or comments pertaining to a previously asked question from the message boards. Just send them in at the beginning of the month on the comments boards and I'll answer them at the end of the month.

1. Hello, Diane. Here's my question (hopefully it makes the cut :-D)

I have relaxed hair that falls just below my shoulders. I want to get the curly look (perhaps as a way to eventually transition back to natural), but don't want to damage my hair or lose the length. Are two-strand twists a good option? Is there a way to do that so that the curly look lasts a week (between shampoos) without flopping or without my having to use products that will make my hair stiff?

Thank you for your help.

2. Dear Ms. DaCosta,
Thank you so much for lending your expertise to all of us. I am a Black dermatologist at Henry Ford Hosp. in Detroit, Mi. I am seeing and treating Black women with hair loss in epdemic proportions. We don't have all the answers we need but I am committed to helping my patients. As a Black woman, who gave up chemical relaxers 11 yrs ago, I know how difficult it is for many women to accept natural hair options. I am planning a seminar to shae with local hair stylists what I am doing to treat and educate my patients. As an expert in hair care, I would like to talk with you about participating in such an endeavor. I do have grant money to help with this project. I can be reached at Djackso1@hfhs.org or at 248-661-6464. I look forward to learning from you at this blog. Thanks again, Diane

5. Hi Diane, I have fine curly hair that has not been relaxed for at least 5 years. Its looks like a jerry curl when it is wet and a frizzy bag of cotton candy when it drys naturally. When I blow dry my hair it is too thin and had no weight or body. It is just thin fly away hair. I wear hair extensions most of the time because of this problem but I am tired of wearing hair extensions. Do you know of anything I can do to make my hair thicker so that I can wear my own hair? I would appreciate any recommendations that you might have. Thanks and have a blessed day.

6. Diane, I am raising my 9 yr. old grandaughter that has very fine and thin hair. I don't know what to do with it without breaking it all out. Perms it breaks, cornroll braiding it breaks, rubber bands it breaks. I am out of ideas. And not to mention the friz, it really looks horrible and drives me up the wall. Do you have any suggestions? I am at my wits with this dilema.

7. Hi Diane
I am a black male and I have soft hair and a little problem with dandruff and my hair is about one to two inches long dry and brittle. I want to have the kinky nappy afro look, similar to yours but from a man prospective. How do I go about getting my hair trained and what products should I use and how to take care of it. There is a lot of information for braids, locs, twist, balds but nothing for men who wants to grow an kinky nappy afro look. Is it true the hair has to be twisted and then untwisted? please help a brother out.

8. there is this book i'm reading called "hair story" makes me feel quite guilty but ties into "Learn about yourselves, as people of color. How beautiful you really are, with all your soft waves, curly, coarse and tightly coiled hair - your crowning glory! " lovely book, i'm gonna get my hands on your book as well.

9. Hi Diane,

My question is similar to others. I would like either the textured look, natural or curly. How do I accomplish this . I currently have a relaxer. Also, is there a way to get a curly look to last. When I get curls I have them put lotta body on my hair.

10. Hi Ms. DaCosta I have three daughters and each one has a different texure of hair. The one I am most concerned about is the one whose hair is very thin, and fuzzy she has a nice length to it but it breaks in patches at the root. Is there anything that I can do to prevent this from happening, and to help her have a fuller head of hair. She is only 8yrs old. I'd appreciated any advice that you can give me.

11. Hello Diane,

I am concerned that the distribution of beauty and hair supply storesin the Black Community is owned primarily by Asians. There is a MONOpoly on this industry that I want to see changed. Madame C.J. Walker would be so ashameed of us for not continuing a legacy which she started. I want to see this Monolpoly broken by some political action plan from the Hair industry. I am so tired of our community getting "played and Pimped" by the Asian community. We must display our economic muscle in this industry and break this monopoly.

Sheila at 10:46AM on Sep 26th 2007

12. Can't we get back to natural hair? Texturizing, perms, weaves, hot combs! All we are doing is making Korean beauty supply stores rich. Rise you mighty race!

Carol at 10:52AM on Sep 26th 2007

13. Thank you for sharing of your vast knowledge and skills for us Black women. I absolutely adore our natural hair and the many creative ways that we can
expess ourselves.

What are your thoughts on the new way for me to add
hair to my natural corned row braided hair by interlocking? Is it safe and productive to natural
growth by not being over stessed with chemicals and
hot combs?

Have you seen or heard about the fact that we as Black
women should not be able to wear our hair in afros or
dreadlocks to the office? There is a very interesting
artical I found on the net at http://ww.law.com/jsp/
nlj/PubArticleNLJ.jsp?id=1188161099761
If you can commit I would like to hear from you. Thank
you for your time.

14. Hi,

I am in early pregnancy and have noticed some changes in my natural hair. Are there particular tips regarding the care/upkeep of my natural tresses throughout pregnancy?

Blessings,
