MAIA CAMPBELL: Missing In Action

Posted May 8th 2007 5:34PM by Karu F. Daniels

By Karu F. Daniels, AOL Black Voices

Actress Maia Campbell, seen here at at Sister 2 Sister party in 2005, is being investigating by Philadelphia-area police.Maia Campbell is a wanted woman.

And not in a good way.

The bronze beauty, who bubbled up as one of Black Hollywood's "ones to watch' during the 1990s, is in the center of a Philadelphia-area police investigation.

Mount Airy's Kevin Taylor filed a police report Monday accusing Campbell, with stealing his Jeep in Germantown, reports 'The Philadelphia Daily News.'

"According to Taylor and his friend Steve Johnson, the pair left Campbell and the car keys alone in the white 1998 Jeep Cherokee registered to Taylor's father, Christ Taylor, as they went into Johnson's home to retrieve musical gear. When they came outside minutes later, Campbell and the car were gone, they said."

What in the world?

The eldest daughter of late best-selling authoress BeBe Moore Campbell, who co-starred with LL Cool J on the series 'In the House,' has been rumored to get into sticky situations over the years.

But this is much.

A near ten-year old Jeep?

Cherokee?

Come on now.

Campbell and her mother, who succumbed to brain cancer last November --one day after her 30th birthday -- were rumored to be estranged throughout the years. She is believed to be the subject of her last book '72 Hour Hold,' which deals with mentall illness.

In an interview with AOL Black Voices, one of her last, the NAACP Image Award winning author commented, "watching my loved one become violent and an incoherent stranger certainly tested my faith. My very close family member has bipolar disorder, which is a mood disorder - a disease of the brain."

Actress Maia Campbell pictured here at a 2005 music industry event in Beverly Hills. Her daughter became fodder for internet chatroom and black gossip blogs when an alleged videoclip of her naked and singing surfaced.

Gossip website Mediatakeout.com went the extra step and alleged that the clip was made in exchange for crack.

"Sources say [she] has been floating around Germantown of late and doesn't seem to be in a good way," reports the 'News.'

Back to the Jeep Cherokee:

Taylor and Johnson said they each left messages on Campbell's cell phone, but she did not return the calls. Johnson befriended Campbell and invited her Monday to hang out with him and Taylor.

Northwest Detectives are investigating the auto theft.

Perhaps she should take up writing like her gifted mother. Her first book should be a memoir, titled 'A.P.B.'

Or 'Grand Theft Auto.'

Anyone with info on the whereabouts of the car or Campbell are encouraged to call 215-686-3353.

16. I never commented on a story before online, but I couldn't help but write on this one. I was a big Fan of Maia's, and I never knew she was going through all of this. The poor girl. I sincerly hope she can locate the right kind of help for her condition. And I hope she turns herself in.

17. 1st I would like to start by saying, I am very sorry for the loss of her Mother. Like some of you said she is a regular person like you and I. Unfortunately, for her when things happen it is posted for the public to read. And, I as well think that making a comment about her breast and eye make-up is ridiculous! I bet if it were your families you wouldn't like it. Remember she does have a child and this is a serious matter! I just hope that she can get help to deal with her illness, and (alleged drug use). I really loved her on In The House. We all fall, some fall harder than other. But, we have to be strong and get up. Sometimes, we need the help of our loved ones. Maia, I wish you only the best!

18. WEIRBEAUTIFUL I agree with your post,we as a people need to stop judging each other and support one another. When we see a sister or brother going through a difficult time...scratch that, any human being we are suppose to pray for them and try to incourage them not make idiotic jokes or shallow comments about the trials they are going through. Some people might say they put themselves in the situation they are in,yea they did, but you think of a situation you put your self in and wanted to know that someone anyone was in your corner helping you get through it.My heart goes out to these stars they don't get to deal with things in private like you and I do. They are always under a microscope and the media is always waiting for someone to mess up so they can drag their names through the mud.People they don't need a judge or jury they need prayer.

19. I think what has happened to Ms. Campbell is tragic. I watched her on In The House with LL Cool J and Debbie Allen. It was a wonderful show. She's very talented, gifted, and beautiful. God's word says that we are not to judge, lest we be judged. The same measure of judgment you deal out, will be measured back to you. Live long enough. Addiction and mental illness are no laughing matter. It's obvious that this woman could use some assistance, as well as, some compassion. Black people need to stop glorifying in the pain and suffering of their own people and start being one another's keeper!God help us, as well as, Ms. Campbell

20. How about this? Instead of talking about her issues why doesn't someone do this? When you do see her talk to her and give her help. Not dollars for the next high. Let her know who she was, who she is, and who she can become. Convince her to go to rehab and be a real friend. She had an emotional trauma which through her in a manic episode. Some people with bipolar d/o try to medicate themselves with drugs to ease the pain. Karu, I respected you as an intelligent journalist because of some of the topics in your blog. You are now exhibiting ghetto-ness in your tact. I am quite sure if we saw you in that condition you and your family would be hurt if we made comments toward you like that. Instead of being part of the problem, be part of the solution!

21. i knew i seen her around the hood, but she just another stragaler now huh ?

cj at 9:40AM on May 10th 2007

22. "Judge not that ye be not judged." "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all." "What goes around, comes around" - so be careful what you say and how you treat or view others. These are some of the things some of remember hearing growing up. Obviously, Maia is dealing with some personal struggles, which may have been heightened by her mother's death. Wherever she is, however she is, those of us who care about this young lady should pray that she will find the inner strength to deal with and overcome the obstacles in her life. Let's keep it positive, people! Where there is life - there is hope and hope is found in God. PEACE!!!

23. ALL THE PARTIES AND EVERYTHING CATCH UP TO YOU IN A BAD WAY ESPICALLY WHEN YOU ARE WEAK, ITS A PITY,ANOTHER SISTER LOSING IT BECAUSE OF SEX AND DRUGS.

TIA at 9:59AM on May 10th 2007

24. I was a fan of Maia's Mom, Bebe Moore Campbell. I read about a family member of hers that had bi-polar disorder, however, it was never stated that it was in fact her daughter. I wish her well, I pray that she finds her way back to a peaceful and productive place in life. I am sure that she is grieving for her Mom, as well. Life has many twists and turns and unfortunately, Maia has lost her way for the moment, but I am hopeful that she will find strength in adversity. (Dennis, thanks for your comments!)

26. Except for the Grace of God, it could be anyone of us.Sister we pray for
you, Maia, and Karu. We pray that we all thrive in Love, Life,
Truth, Peace, Knowledge, Wisdon and Understanding. Because the old is
truly passing away and we need to "Learn to do well...relieve the
oppressed...plead for the widow. Come now,let us reason
together...." (Isaiah 1:17,18)

I hope she will be found safe and sound. Maybe she will wake up and realize she needs to change and seek help b4 its 2 late

Tamika at 10:54AM on May 10th 2007

29. I had no idea Maia was having such a tough life. As a single black female raising two kids on my own I know how hard it can be. I hope she can get herself together for her daughter's sake. She's a very beautiful young lady who needs to really get help in dealing with her illness. Hopefully with the right treatment she can pull through this but she has to want to do it. Anythings possible with GOD on our side. U R N my prayers my sista!!

deelishious2 at 10:54AM on May 10th 2007
