FRENCHIE DAVIS: Going for Hers

Posted Mar 10th 2007 11:14PM by Karu F. Daniels

By Karu F. Daniels, AOL Black Voices

(l-r) Conrtoversial marred American Idol contestants Antonella Barba and Frenchie Davis are in the media limelight this week.

To hell with Antonella Barba, Frenchie Davis is going for hers.

For the past couple of weeks, the vocal powerhouse has been embroiled -- for the lack of a better term -- in a new 'American Idol' scandal. Davis was disqualified from the popular television talent competition in 2003 when show producers brought to light that she posed topless for an adult website years earlier.

Barba, a new contestant for this season's competition, is the 20-year-old New Jersey native who has become the center of media scuttlebutt since sexually suggestive photos of her surfaced on the Internet.

Since then, a barrage of mainstream media have weighed in on the scandal (including Bill O'Reilly), while show producers refused to acknowledge it -- as they did so unceremoniously in Davis's case.

Rosie O'Donnell, the outspoken ringleader of the ABC daily gabfest 'The View' -- after just going through a nasty media battle with reality TV and real estate titan Donald Trump -- threw down the gauntlet and called a spade a spade during the March 6 telecast.

"I think it's racist. I do," said O'Donnell, adding in reference to Davis, "I think it's because she's black."

Whoa!!!

We all know the powerful institution of racism has become a taboo subject in the mainstream media -- especially when it comes to topical morning TV. But O'Donnell's eyebrow raising comments brought the heat to the FOX show, which seems to always be marred in controversy -- while remaining a ratings juggernaut.

To add to the frenzy, Los Angeles-based community activist Najee Ali staged an "Anti American Idol Rally" outside of the Kodak Theatre (where the show is broadcast live), earlier this week, to protest the show's "double standards."

In the meantime, Davis -- who conducted a handful of television interviews this week about the controversy -- was crowned as having the "Best Week Ever," on the popular VH1 show of the same name offering slapstick commentary on current events in pop culture.

"I just heard that," Davis chuckled about the unusual honor, earlier tonight. "That is hilarious."

The BV Newswire caught up with the Los Angeles native in between breaks during tonight's performance of the hit Broadway show, 'Rent,' at New York's Nederlander Theatre.

"I don't particularly care for the circumstances but it's making me wonder if I want to be in the limelight," she said about the new media attention. "You know, this is what I love to do, this is my talent, but all of the stuff that comes along with it, I'm beginning to wonder if it's worth it."

I SAY: "Well, the good thing is they didn't have to kick the girl off the show, as we suspected because she kind of did herself in." (The brunette beauty was cast off during Thursday's elimination process.)

AND FRENCHIE IS JUST SITTING UP THERE GIGGLING AND RESPONDING: 'Ummmm, Hmmmm."

When prodded for a verbal reaction to Barba and her long overdue ouster, Davis diplomatically stated: "I'm not making any more comments about that. I'm done."

Oh okay.

"I've said all I need to and I don't want to come across to my fans like I'm complaining or whatever ... so I'm done speaking on that."

When asked if she thinks whether or not the negative media attention played a hand in the show, Davis admitted that the question was hard to answer especially considering the fact that she doesn't even watch the show anymore. "So I can't comment on that either," she quipped.

Frenchie Davis belts it out on American Idol in 2003.

With thirty more credits to go in order to matriculate her undergraduate degree from Howard University (majoring in Theater), Davis did reveal that she is looking forward to leaving the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winning musical on May 24, after four years of playing a pivotal role in the evolving cast.

"I'm not willing to be miserable for a steady paycheck," she explained. "I've been in 'Rent' for four years. We do two shows on Saturday, two shows on Sunday, we work on the holidays, and we do shows on Christmas, on Thanksgiving, all year around. I have not spent the holidays with my family in over four years."

Before the Barba scandal ensued, Davis has been toiling at her craft. She signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records with a desire to record a rock/soul fusion project. She also auditioned for parts in Aaron McGruder's wildly popular animated series 'The Boondocks' and for the role of Effie Melody White in the movie version of 'Dreamgirls.' (Her critically acclaimed turn in a national version of the show's revival is the stuff entertainment legends are made of. See clip here.)

So maybe being in the radar will be more of a blessing than a curse this go round for the woman legally known as Franchell Davis?

Pondering the thought, she said: "But even being on the radar, these people cast who they want. And it's not always the girl with the most talent and it's not always who theoretically more deserving. Its just who you know or what they are looking for. But I continue to go for what I know and pursue the opportunities that will work for me."

Check out Frenchie Davis belting out 'And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going' at a recent club engagement.

Always one to display humility, Davis, who turns 28 on May 7, said she is still grateful for the outpouring of recent support from her fans and notables such as Reverend Al Sharpton, and O'Donnell. "I need to reach out to her and thank her for supporting a sister because I think she is great and I love that she's not afraid to voice her opinion. "

"I can totally understand why her and other people look at this and say what they say," she continued. "I think there are people who did disagree with the race issue but still agree that something unfair happened here. So it was interesting, it was very interesting to get the feedback. Even if people were playing devil's advocate in the situation, they were still very respectful and that was great."

1. i agree with rosie. it is racial. even though the contestants on the show say the show isn't raciest. they mis the whole point-yes there are black contestants, but it just seems strange that a black females was aked to leave and a white girl wasn't. they made all kinds of reasons for her staying..priviate photos etc. and frenchie was paid for her photos. well better to be paid than just be a slut. why would you take such photos for someone so young and who had them. if it was a friend-then they weren't one. did she pass them out like candy? she just showed what she was.

2. Frenchie has a great voice and I will purchase her CD as soon as it hit stores. That eclectic fusion of rock/soul, sounds like a winner.

I'm glad she's OK with folks playing the role of the devils advocate (as long as it's done respectfully) because i'm going to horn it up right now!

Frenchie willingly posed topless for an adult website(regardless if it was done to help finance her education) it was still done willingly).

There're countless women who get 2 and 3 jobs to finance there education. In todays society you don't have to result to stripping or exposing yourself on the internet to fund your academic dreams.

Frenchie is a student at Howard University...so I know she's smart enough to have found other ways of supporting her education. Did she ever try out for Amateur Night At the Apollo? It's important to show your talent in as many music venues as possible. Paying or not paying.

As BLACK women, we need to stop allowing our circumstances(lack of funds) to put us in compromising positions...that's detrimental to our well being or will come back to haunt us later down the road.

I'm going to continue on my devil's advocate role by saying, sometimes the money is so good in these compromising positions that our morals take a back seat to the mulah.

Let me just add that there're grants, loans and scholarships for everything from getting good grades, perfect attendance, minority grants, writing the perfect essay grants, civil duty grants and so on. There're also a multitude of private sector companies and charity organizations, that offer various grants.

3. I DON'T KNBOW WHY THIS IS SUCH A BIG SURPRISE UNLESS
YOU DON'T HAVE ANY IDEAS ABOUT THE 1960'S CIVIL RIGHTS STRUGGLES AND CANNOT COMPARE WHAT LITTLE CHANGES CAME ABOUT. I WAS THERE!! IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN DOUBLE STANDARDS WHEN IT COME TO THE TWO RACES AND I HAVE EXPERIENCE IT FIRST HAND AS A BLACK WOMAN. WHEN IT HAPPEN OUR PEOPLE MAINLY TURN THEIR HEADS AND LOOK THE OTHER WAY SO THEY WILL NOT GET INVOLVED, UNTIL IT HAPPEN TO THEM THEN THEY CRY FOR PITY AND WANT SUPPORT. THIS IS ESPECIALLY TRUE OF THE SO CALL BLACKS MEN, WHO THINK THEY ARE AN EXCEPTION AND WILL BE SAFE IF THEY ARE WALKING DOWN THE STREET SWINGING ON THE THE STRAP OF A WHITE WOMAN. FINALLY SHE TIES HIM TO A TREE AND WHIPS HIM THEN HE SNEAKS BACK ACROSS THE RAILROAD TRACKS AND HANGS OUT IN "THE HOLE IN THE WALL" ASHAME AND LYING LIKE A D--!!! YES I AM ANGRY!!!

4. it is a very good thing that frenchie has prevailed. american idol is very racial but that just goes with how the country really is. yeah, ruben and fantasia won the title, but that doesnt mean that the show doesn't play into racism. this who auntenello situation is shameful and is a tale tell sign of the undertone of racism that exists. we shouldnt just complain, we need to switch the channel!!!

julius hall at 7:03PM on Mar 11th 2007

5. the videoclip of frenchie is a lot to take in. and its not synched to the song. this is why she can't get it together after all of this time.

chelsea cooper at 7:16PM on Mar 11th 2007

6. She is certainly not the first one to be dealt a bad hand and definitely not the last. Oh my, another one of us has been done wrong by someone or some group of people. It's not as if we aren't resilient people and are not capable of re-grouping and coming out on top. There are many more blacks who are mistreated because they're black but they do what they need to do and succeed anyway. People all over the world are done wrong for one reason or another. Everyone is playing this out like it's a big deal. I tend to think that we subject each other more to painful treatment than any other group of people, especially us brothers. If we clean up our own house and focus on strengthening black ideals, morality, love, family, etc., we won't need Rosie to stand up for us.

7. ANTONELLA IS A SKANKY SLUT. FRENCHIE JUST SHOWED HER BIG OLE TITTIES TO MAKE SOME EXTRA CASH FOR COLLEGE -- WHICH SHAMEFULLY SHE STILL HASNT FINISHED AFTER ALL OF THIS (GIRL, YOU COULDVE GOT SIX ONLINE DEGREES IN ALL THIS TIME). WHAT MADE ANTONELLA TAKE THOSE PHOTOS? HER BEING HOT IN BETWEEN THE LEGS. SPEAKING OF, SHE WAS IN BETWEEN ANOTHER GIRLS LEGS IN ONE OF THE PHOTOS. THATS CRAZY. IF MISS USA HAD TO GO TO REHAB AND WAS THROWN UNDER THE BUS IN THE NEWS, ANTONELLA IS JUST WALKING OFF SCOTT FREE. I DONT THINK ANYONE WILL SIGN HER TO A RECORD DEAL. IM SURE SHE'LL BE DOING VIVID VIDEOS LIKE KIM & RAY J.

OMAREE at 7:30PM on Mar 11th 2007

8. frenchie is crazy and uneducated. her comments come off real dumb. do you know how many people study and work hard to get on broadway. people from juliard and schools all across the country vie for such an esteemed chance at success. and her lazy fat ass is crying the blues because shes working eight shows a week. people like jennifer holliday and sheryl lee ralph has built careers on working eight shows a week. that's broadway!!! while its all good and dandy that her fat ass has done a show for four years, for her to bow out the way she is is just wrong. and she had plenty of time to finish that degree. maybe shes just not college material. she needs to count her blessings.

TrueRubenFan at 7:34PM on Mar 11th 2007

9. her graduating from college has nothing to with her success Rubenfan. look at kanye west and puffy. they dropped out of college and are super successful. all frenchie needs to do is work at her craft. and there will be other shows for frenchie. a talent like hers will last a very long timel. look at melba moore. she was on welfare and no one has been more washed up than she has. but shes broadway royalty. and can get a show when shes ready to work.

Frenchielover at 7:50PM on Mar 11th 2007

10. it has nothing to do with race - look at frenchie she is as big as a house. AI was doing us males a service by kicking her off. at the end of the day, the world is shallow and it comes down to beauty. she is really trying to milk the last nanosecond of her 15 seconds of fame.

Marcus at 8:30PM on Mar 11th 2007

11. aren'T entertainers supposed to be attractive, maybe just a little overweight??come on who would pay to go see this heifer sing or what ever????just another black using the race card!!!!!

lawrence at 9:31PM on Mar 11th 2007

12. Puh-Leez..This is not race related. This is all about outer appearance. It is well known that there are many social double standards when it comes to physical appearance. I know that you people dont honesly believe that if it were a fat white woman, she wouldn't habe been kicked off. The big girl from last season is very unattractive, while the girl this season was cute(meet society's standards of beauty). I never thought that she would have won, but I know her looks would give her a couple of weeks. Life is not fair, but that is society.

Moreover, the big girl posed nude for money; the recent girl had her pics post on the net without her permission. Those are very different cases. Either way, this is not about race.

Sheila at 11:28PM on Mar 11th 2007

13. It's very strange that they are doing all they can to protect the dignity of this white chick while they did all they could to scandalize Frenchie. It reminds of the Milli Vanilli fiascoe years ago where the racist American press hounded these young bruthas' while Ashley Simpson who got caught lip-synching too nothing was really said about it and they didn't hold public vigils to burn her records like they did with Fabrice Morvan and Rob Pilatus. It's sad to say that racism is still alive and well in this country and the American press is proving more and more that they have racist sentiments and racially motivated reasons for trying to bad mouth and scandalize blacks in the public eye: Mike Tyson, James Brown, O.J. Simpson, Michael Jackson, Isaiah Washington, and others. They're making it plain that the next time we have to stand up for our rights, doing it in a peaceful way will not be an option anymore.

Daniel Asamota at 12:14AM on Mar 12th 2007

14. Al Sharpton, Najee Ali and others are considered trump cards, that shouldn't be pulled out every time black folks yell, FOUL! :O

What Milli Vanilli did was much worse than lip synching to the wrong song. Milli Vanilli were only show props...who never sung on any of their tracks. I'm surprised that they got away with that fiasco as long as they did. What IF the record had not scratched?!?!?

Salene at 2:48AM on Mar 12th 2007

15. FRENCHIE, I JUST WANT TO PRAISE YOU FOR BEING SUCH A HONORABLE AND RESPECTABLE YOUNG WOMAN DURING ALL THIS UNNECESSARY HYPE, ANTONELLA WAS NOTHING FOR YOU TO COMMENT ON, FOR AS I'M CONCERNED SHE WAS AND IS A WASTE OF TIME. YOU ARE A GIFTED AND TALENTED WOMAN GOD HAS A PROMISING PLAN FOR YOU, I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST.
