BLAIR UNDERWOOD: Three the Hard Way

(l-r) Ving Rhames, Kristoff St. John and Blair Underwood are joining forces for the indepent film 'Bridge to Nowhere.'Three of Hollywood's finest black actors are getting together for a project worthy of mentioning.

Blair Underwood has designs to direct an indie drama, titled 'The Bridge to Nowhere,' starring Ving Rhames.

The film, which has 'Young & The Restless' veteran Kristoff St. John attached as a producer, is the story of four blue-collar men who team with a destitute prostitute to create an elite escort service.

Escort service? Hmmmm.

"Hustling" is big business for some of the brothers.

And I am certain the strapping Rhames -- I will never forget seeing him baring his all in 'Baby Boy' with AJ Johnson -- will knock this type of role out of the ballpark.

'Bridge,' which marks Underwood's debut as a director, is scheduled to begin production in Pittsburg in the next few weeks.

The 'Krush Groove' actor, who can most recently be seen in the CBS sitcom 'The New Adventures of Old Christine,' previously directed five music videos and a film short titled, 'The Second Coming.'

Along with an exciting mystery book series with Simon & Schuster on the way, the Tacoma, Washington native is producing and starring in supernatural thriller 'My Soul to Keep' for Fox Searchlight and reportedly producing the TLC series 'Easy Money.' He also has a TV series 'In Treatment' (with Gabriel Byrne) under way for HBO.

Rhames was recently announced as joining the cast for Gabrielle Union's new ABC pilot 'Football Wives.'

16. I UNDERSTAND THAT EVERYONE IS ENTITLED TO HIS OR HER OWN OPINION, SO HERE'S MINE. WHILE WE ALL SIT BACK AND LASH OUT OUR FEELINGS OR THOUGHTS ABOUT WHAT THESE
MEN ARE DOING IN HOLLYWOOD OR WHAT TYPE OF MOVIE THEY ARE DEPICTING, HOW ABOUT SOME OF YOU WRITE A SCRIPT OR
SCREENPLAY FOR THEM. REGARDLESS OF HOW WE FEEL SOMEONE
IS GOING TO PAY TO SEE THIS FILM.

17. TO ALL THOSE WHO WANT TO SEE MORE POSTIVE ROLES FOR BLACKS, WHY NOT POOL YOUR MONIES STOP SPENDING IT ON MCDEES AND KFC AND CREATE YOUR OWN PROJECTS, LIKE MR.PERRY DID?

KNOWS IT ALL at 3:51PM on Mar 6th 2007

18. A LOT OF THESE COMMENTS SEEM TO BE COMING FROM WOMEN, AND I AGREE WITH THAT WE GOT ENOUGH DEGRADING ART FORMS ABOUT THE AFRO-AMERICAN LIFE. BUT HOW MANY OF YOU SISTAS VOICING YOUR OPINIONS WILL REALLY BE UPSET WHEN YOU SEE THAT ONES BEING THE ESCORTS ARE ACTUALLY THE BROTHAS WHO PICTURES WHO SEEN AT THE BEGINNING OF THE ARTICLE?

19. Ladies, you are all tripping. First of all prostituion is still popular and has been since the begining. But to say we as black people should play more uplifting roles is so whack. The topic is interesting and they do have to sell movies. I guess they should do movies about opening health care centers or something. NOTT! Let the men do their thing and lets see where the movie takes us. It wasn't like baby boy was so positive but it was a good movie right? So lay off my good men. I'm sure they are going to surprise us.

20. like the lady said it's just amovie I just want to see more good looking black men on tv or at the movies and when i go home my mind still the same before i saw the movie everybody has there own little secret.

gwen at 5:11PM on Mar 6th 2007

21. I am too, waiting to see the movie itself. I appreciate each of the gentlemen as actors and as black men. But sometimes in life you have to do what is necessary to get where you want to go. I am sure Halle felt the same way when she had to suck a white man's penis to get an oscar, and Denzel had to play a crooked cop to get his. Those two paved the way for the younger generation and look, now we have Jamie, and Jennifer.... so don't knock what you don't know. Just appreciate the fact that they are not on the streets selling drugs or making rap records and videos where every woman is a trick, hoe, and a bitch.

22. Let's just wait and see what the fellas are up to before we go and assume the worst! I can't imagine these men producing anything that will bring shame to themselves and the plight of the Black race. But I too am sick of the comedies to nowhere portrayed on television weekly! Is February the only month out of twelve that Black History programs can be seen ( and then only on public television stations) that our children can learn SOME great things that our people are responsible for? I am thankful for growing up in the southern part of the country during pre-integration years when we were taught Black History every day in the Black schools with teachers who did't mind sharing in the struggle!

23. We ask that we not be subject to double standards. But we often present double standards of our own. Some movies and tv are just entertainment, nothing more and nothing less. Every movie is not meant to send a message or make a statement. So back up and stop being so judgemental. I can't wait to see some good looking black eye candy for a change.

candace at 7:09PM on Mar 6th 2007

24. a new hooker flick, cool. who is going to play the a'mack". i hope they have a nice liquor store.

blackcity at 8:20PM on Mar 6th 2007

25. Here we go again! Can we not just let the past be the past? We are
constantly kindering up statistical sterotypes for ourselves as black
people (ex:the n word). Okay, maybe when Underwood was coming up the
pimp movies were what inspired him to become an actor, being these
were some of the only movies that depicted black male actors. Perhaps
he's living out some inspired dream by directing this film. Perhaps!
Whatever, I could accept it if he were between the ages of 19-22
because generally that's the age group where you still just don't
know no better. Look how most young rappers these days start out,
like Ludacris and Jay-z, constant voulger lyrics about pimpn and
hoes, when they were younger. As they've grown older slowly but
surely there lyrics have been watered down. Yes, in some songs they
still talk about this subject, but a bit more tastefully. "Shake your
money maker..." sounds a lot better that "I got hoes in different area
codes". Underwood and the rest of the gentlemen are well into their
thirties and older and should know better by now. But hey some people
settle for good over greatness. They're only human!

Priscilla at 9:37PM on Mar 6th 2007

26. IT can't be anything but a good movie with them 3 fine brothers, not to mention great actors. I love Kristoff on Y&R, great actor as well as Blair & Ving. Let the men do their work. Watch the movie be glad them Black Brothers are doing their thing, working together.

JoAnn at 11:04PM on Mar 6th 2007

27. I commend my handsome black men on making their mark. All 3 of you are evey womens dream and there is nothing like seeing brothers do their thing in a positive and productive manner for themselves and I will watch anything you 3 make and will understand the message and the meaning.

cassandra at 12:27AM on Mar 7th 2007

28. I don't blame any actor, of any race or color, who performs in a role that may be degrading to some. If it's the only work they're being offer, hey, they gotta eat. I was cool with the movie 'Hustle & Flow', because although it was about a pimp, it dwelved deeper into his character, showing his unhappiness, and a dream of a better life. Black actors often complained about the types of roles they are offered. And how if they could make the movies they wanted, we wouldn't see "the same ol' BS again and again".

Well, here we have a Black producer, a Black director and a Black actor putting together a movie. What about? Starting, not some rinky-dink, everyday, run-of-the-mill escort service, but an ELITE one! OOH! And their partner isn't just a prostitute (which is bad enough), she's destitute! Like that needed some qualification! Why couldn't she be working her way through college or a widow of police violence.

I ask myself, "WHY? Was that the BEST idea on the table? The ONLY? There must be a reason. Did they feel that this was the only type of movie we'd be willing to 'pay' to see amass? Even the author, Karu F. Daniels, doesn't mention that Ving Rhames is a Juilliard School of Drama graduate or that he performed in Shakespeare in the Park. She doesn't remind us of his mesmerizing performance in 'Pulp Fiction'. Only how "strapping he was in 'Baby Boy'.

This can't be the only types of stories they think we're interested in? So I reread the article, and the title caught my eye: 'The Bridge to Nowhere'. Perhaps the movie will show that this type of lifestyle is not to be glorified (unlike some of the Rap and Hip-Hop artists who advocate and promote such behavior). One can only hope!

The author feels this is a "project worthy of mentioning". And while I love to look at a beautiful, Black man like the rest, I hope there's more meat to this movie than Mr. Rhames' beefcake. We shall see.

30. ...want to audition for any role, of any kind. I am six foot three two-hundred and ten pounds, and just turned thirty years of age. I am in the night club industry as a Bartender/ Event Planner, most patrons think I am not old enough to serve any alcohol. I usually just say..."I guess I make pretty good drinks."
My passion is to be an actor, and someday put my thoughts on screen as a writer; visionary. Can you help me get the word out to these people in the industry...pronto.

Thank You,

Devon Castain
