EDDIE MURPHY: Got to Have 'Soul Power'

Posted Jan 31st 2007 4:04PM by Karu F. Daniels

By Karu F. Daniels, AOL Black Voices

Eddie Murpjhy said in a recent interview that the legendary James Brown chose him to portray him a filmed version of the soul icon's life.To hell with what you heard; have Eddie Murphy tell it, he will play the role of James Brown when and if a filmed version of his life story ever see the light of day.

Not some of the other folks who have been mentioned -- like Usher.

The box-office superstar, currently starring in the critically acclaimed movie musical 'Dreamgirls,' claims that he was hand picked by the legendary Godfather of Soul to portray him.

The funnyman, who is experience a career resurgence (of sorts) with his Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild award winning role as a soul crooner past his prime, told 'Access Hollywood': "James Brown said to me years ago 'If they ever do my life, you got to play my story.' I said, 'James, if I do you, people will be laughing.' [He said] 'They ain't gonna laugh if you don't try to be funny.'"

With a pompadour coif and heavy sarcastic wit, the Brooklyn born star of hit franchises 'The Nutty Professor' and 'Beverly Hills Cop' became a household name in the early 1980s with his infamous impersonation of Brown during his 'Saturday Night Live' heyday.

As soul crooner James

While those days are long gone the memories were harkened by film audiences with Murphy's dramatic acting debut in the Bill Condon-helmed adaptation, which also stars Jamie Foxx, Beyonce Knowles, Anika Noni Rose, Danny Glover and Jennifer Hudson.

"I couldn't do James Brown now until he got [to] 40, 'cause I'm 45," he quipped.

"I'll be 46 in April and I'm not doin' no splits and no s**t like that and rippin' my ass out tryin' to make no movie. The split days are gone."

Well, never say never.

Murphy is a strong contender for an Academy Award this year, so that may change his thinking.

Fellow funnyman Foxx initially said he wouldn't do another period movie after his star turn in 'Ray.' But then he won the Oscar for the role. And now he's in 'Dreamgirls.'

Period.

31. Eddie is more than qualified to play james Brown. Just because he is a comedian like Jaime doe not mean that he cannot act. Take a look at his role in Dreamgirls.

32. Eddie was great in Dreamgirls, he could surely pull off JB, so could Bobbie B. Usher would be good for Jackie Wilson because he's a great dancer who could work the performance style of Jackie. Love (Bad Boy)Terrance, but not quite for the role of Jackie. Will be interesting to see. Why doesn't Eddie just buy the rights to JB's story and it's a done deal, although that method many times does not work. Usher would have to loose weight. Kat as JB, we would miss the whole movie laughing "out" all of his scenes, James told Eddie, he doesn't want "funny". Put Kat in the bury yo' money in the yard scene! :)

33. Wayne Brady. May seem far fetched but given the chance I think he would do a great job. Eddie is too high profile. No one would believe him as James Brown.

35. I just want to say that Eddie Murphy is one of the greatest entertainers of all time.........soon to be a Legend in his own time...just like James Brown.

Like the person stated earlier....we all have are ups and downs...no one is perfect and no one will go through life without some kind of pain, it's ievitable!!

I love the talent of Eddie Murphy...and I'm so happy and thrilled to see him back out there....Eddie makes me proud!!!

36. I saw the original Dreamgirls play many times in the early 80's and the role of James Thunder Early portrayed so masterfully by Cleavant Derricks was a tough act to follow. When I heard that Eddie Murphy was up for the part in the movie, I did not think Eddie could pull it off because he did not have a set of pipes as strong as Mr. Derricks but what Eddie lacked in vocals he more than made up for in character. After seeing his performance I was convinced that he could portray Lotty Dotty and any got damn body he wants to. I hope he gets it.

39. I loved this movie and his part in it showed that he has a lot of talent.. I did not like him much after that little thing he pulled when his Beautiful wife was away doing a modeling shoot. If anyone forgot he was caught with a transvest_ whatever I don't even know how to spell the word.. LOL.. I am not putting any ones right to be who they want to be ..I am just saying that Unfaithfulness is Unfaithfulness no matter how you spell it. Funny he is and I see he can be serious too.. I say he can play James Brown he is great in becoming other folks even Italian in his movies.. LOL.. One thing he has done that might hurt him with some folks out there in Movie Land is the New funny film that is going to be out or is already and has hit the Bulletins in CA.. Some folks are complaining already.LOL.. Folks if funny movies about over weight folks hurts your feeling please simply don't watch them ..I am over weight and it does not hurt my feelings just inspires me to lose it >>LOL.. Wow I almost wrote a book LOL.. I say Hit it Eddie go for it.. Life goes fast look how young Anna Nicole Smith went.. So Live it up while you can .. SMILE Folks And If you read this Thank You for your time.. Take care..(*_*)

40. Yes Eddie, your Oscar nominee was long over due but please don't look at not winning Best Supporting Actor last night as a total loss. Your acting style in Dream Girls was the catalyst for your real Oscar performance which will be the James Brown story.

You will win the next Oscar for a black leading actor, just don't give up on your destiny. Condition your body to do what it needs done to be Mr. Dynamite.

Thank you for always going to the next level w/ your God given talent.

41. Does anybody think Eddie Murphy could do a Totally Serious spiritual Movie? I was impressed by his performance as the Vampire in "A Vampire in Brooklyn".
And "Coming to America" is my all time favorite.
I'M NOT LYIN'! I AIN'T KISSIN' UP! I GOT ACCOUNTS WITH DATES TO PROVE IT!
Never mind.
I have a concept for a spiritual fanatsy/music video mix
movie. THIS IS A MISSION MAN! A MISSION, FROM GOD!A TRUE
BLACK MESSIAH!
Anybody know a good website that will "actually" get an email to him.
