Talking Shop: Barry Bonds Chasing History

"I will cheer for Mr. Bonds ... as they did, for
Ty Cobb, Joe Jackson, Babe Ruth ... before 1947 ... I will cheer for Mr. Bonds, as they did, Mark McGwire, and Jose Canseco, and Roger Clemmons ... It is what brought baseball fans back to the ball fields, they weren’t complaining then ... It is what it is ... and if Hank Aaron refuses to show up, it won't matter."

"The cream that Bonds was putting on his arms was a steroid. Bonds just stated that he didn't know that it was ... As a black man I will be glad that he broke the record. But as a black man I am kind of sad that he broke Hank Aaron's record."

"I feel that MLB and all the fans should cheer Barry regardless of what's going on. He is being sentenced before being tried or charged. I am a big fan of his and I think that if every time something good happens, damn people always have to find something bad. Let him be. Celebrate and have joy."

"I will be cheering for Bonds. I have so much respect for the frenzied hatred that he has had to endure. I hear so many in the media say that the backlash that he has received is only because of alleged steroid use. I don't buy that at all. The backlash he is receiving has roots in racism, in my opinion. He is struggling right now, and I am waiting for him to get back on track and pass Aaron."

"I won't be booing, but I certainly won't be cheering to kudo a false achievement."

"I think Barry is definitely a steroid user … his head looks like someone pumped it full of air. Take a look at some of his past pics prior to the alleged steroid years and see the difference. And he did admit to putting the cream on but he didn’t know what it was … yea right."

"Unlike Biggio, Aaron and Mays [Bonds] is still effective. As we speak he leads the major league in walks, he is number 13 in home runs, number 7 in slugging and number 1 in on base percentage ... And if he played three more years he would have over 800 home runs and would be the all-time leader in RBIs and runs."

"Bonds is one of the greatest hitters to ever play the game and he should be treated better by the world of baseball. I see all these people talking about how they don't like Bonds because of his attitude but do they really know him? I DOUBT IT!"

"Barry has to live with himself -- and the memory of his dad -- the great Bobby Bonds, who was a too legit to quit baseball hero from back in the days of Hank Aaron and Barry's godfather Willie Mays. Barry if you or any of yours are reading this, you don't fit your dad's spikes. Bobby Bonds had no patience for whiners who took shortcuts and didn't pay their way. He knew the costs."

"Does it matter that Aaron appears not to support Bonds? Not to me it doesn't. I'm going to celebrate the record to the hilt. His real fans will. I could care less if Aaron won't support him."
