About a year ago, we here at Black Voices had an idea about covering the life of athletes off the court and field. Whether it was launching a new record label or getting with some hot actress at Jay-Z’s Club 40/40, we tried to be there to let you know what your favorite pro player is up to when they’re not playing ball.
To celebrate our one year anniversary, we're revisiting some of the stories that you couldn’t get enough of. Ranging from the love life of Tony and Eva to Rodman’s latest publicity stunt, we figured out that you guys really like this stuff. Check out some of your favorites below.
The Adventures of Tony and EvaOur very first column featured
Eva Langoria spilling to Rolling Stone that she’s wasn't trying to be a housewife, in the middle of the playoffs no less. It didn’t seem to bother Tony too much, since his team went on to win the championship. Even if Parker had any tension to release, he could simply
put it in a rhyme and get it off his chest, because you know, he’s T-Pizzle. We’ll always look forward to Tony and Eva stories though, even if they are dissing Mexican bike cops or Eva is talking about being the 'teacher' in their relationship, we’ll be there to eat it up!
Stephen Jackson Wedding WoesOne of our more popular stories was when
Indiana Pacer Stephen Jackson called off his wedding. We got the story from someone who actually attended the wedding and said that the reason it was cancelled was that the wife-to-be refused to sign a prenuptial agreement. Now we ain’t saying she’s a gold digger, but she was definitely not messing with a broke… dude.
Too Much RodmanWe don’t know why people still like Dennis Rodman, or even care about what he’s doing, but for some reason, whenever we publish a story, y'all eat it up. It could be
about a new book, him hosting
the Lingerie Bowl and later quitting, or doing a
Celebrity Big Brother show with Anna Nicole Smith, you guys snatch it up like free food. Can we move on yet?
Serena Has Other Things on Her MindSerena Williams has been taking a lot of heat lately for her absence in tennis tournaments and appearances in TV shows and red carpets. Yeah, it’s her life, but as fans we would like to see
her back on the court and apparently we aren’t the only ones. Still though, we can’t be mad at her
clothing line, books, cosmetic line, and acting chops, we just miss the good ole days when the Williams sisters had to play each other for the championship after knocking everyone else out. Domination, in this case, is a good thing.
T.O. Spits RhymesTerrell Owens made all types of headlines for his behavior as part of the Philadelphia Eagles, but he really caught our attention
when he was trying to rap about it. We really hope he doesn’t plan to make a second career out of it.
Brandy and Quentin Richardson Go On and Off During the 2005 NBA All-Star Weekend, Quentin Richardson (then with the Phoenix Suns) and R&B singer Brandy were just a couple of love birds enjoying the Mile High City, while Quentin ran away with the 3-Point competition title. Fast forward a summer and a trade to the New York Knicks,
Brandy and Quentin called it quits. There was no definite reason why, but apparently Brandy still cared for ole boy since she went and
comforted him during his brother’s funeral. Too bad not long after Quentin was schmoozing with models in NY nightclubs. Ahh well.
Laila Ali is Not gay! Get Over It!Yeah, people are still talking about it, but it’s over. Laila responded and
said it wasn’t true and has the backing of her family and friends, so the discussion can end there! She doesn’t even know Queen Latifah! Maybe you can talk about how Laila is about to knock
out one of these video chicks if they don’t get their mind right! Is Barry Bonds Really a Racist?
Okay, so he might of
dissed a few white folks in his time but does that make him racist? We don’t think so. Matter of fact, we believe Bonds is an equal opportunity hater. He really doesn’t like anybody, especially those people with pesky microphones in his face asking about steroids and BALCO.
Athletes Help out Katrina VictimsWe really like to keep things light around here. There’s already enough drama in the world and probably in your lives on a day to day basis. So when you visit us here on the Player’s Life we hope to help you escape for a moment. But on the real, when these athletes come out their shell and help others, give back to their community and show consistent unselfishness, we have to mention it. In the case of the Hurricane Katrina victims,
athletes from all the major professional sports came out to help in anyway they could. It was moving and inspiring. Hopefully we’ll see more of this from these players, and not just when a disaster hits.
