It's been a rough couple of weeks here at the TPL offices: We're die-hard Denver Bronco fans, and so the murder of
Darrent Williams on New Year's Day was a heartbreaking experience for us. Last week's funeral helped put a little closure on the situation, and we feel a little better as officials get closer to finding the perpetrators.
Of course, Bronco players and management are doing everything they can to help out Williams' family in this time of mourning, but Denver Nuggets stars
Carmelo Anthony and
Kenyon Martin also announced that they are also planning something for the family.
"I don't know exactly what it's going to be," Melo told the Denver Post. "I just think it's the right thing to do for his kids. I knew him pretty well.”
One of the plans is to start a college fund for Williams' two children. Melo and Williams became friends after seeing each other around town. They talked on New Year’s Eve about their plans for the night, several hours before the shooting.
Sam Cassell is an Alien SuperheroWe're not ones to make fun of how people look, but luckily that does not stop other people. Ever since
Sam Cassell joined the league, people have commented on his looks, saying he looked like an alien or something.
Now, some folks have taken it a step further and created a video game called 'Alien Sam.' As
Alien Sam, you must defeat the giant heads of
Yao Ming,
Shaquille O' Neal,
Ron Artest and others in order to save the universe -- or something like that.
We're not sure how Sam feels about this, but the game is pretty fun especially if you like goofing off when you should be working. Check out the game yourself at http://remaincalm.org/aliensam.html.

King James Looking for Beats
Cleveland Cavaliers superstar
LeBron James recently hooked up with Sprite to be a part of its "subLYMONal" ad campaign. As if his pockets aren't fat enough, King James is asking fans to go to www.lebron23-23.com and create some theme music for an upcoming commercial.
"To have a theme song created by the fans of Sprite and the NBA is a real honor. The online world offers so many new and exciting ways for all of us to communicate and express ourselves," James said in a statement. "LeBron 23-23.com will produce some great tracks and I am really looking forward to listening to and judging the best songs."
Paul Wall and
Al Fatz will help out LeBron on judging the top three tracks out of the top 23 most voted tracks. The grand prize winner will get a chance to join Paul Wall and Al Fatz in the studio to fine tune and tweak the beat for the commercial. Other prizes include signed LeBron jersey, video IPODs, noise canceling headphones and portable AM/FM/CD stereo units.
Damon Stoudamire Gives Out Sam's Club CardsLast week Memphis Grizzlies guard
Damon Stoudamire
helped out the families of 100 children at a Memphis Sam's Club. In collaboration with the store and Memphis Athletic Ministries, Stoudamire gave away $400 gift cards to each of the families.
"It's a chance for these kids to get out here and get what they want," Stoudamire told the Memphis Commercial Appeal. "As I got older, I got to have the type of Christmas that I always wanted, so I love to see kids have a smile on their face and be able to do a lot of things they didn't think they were going to be able to do. I just like to see kids smile."
The families were given the cards and went shopping right away. Stoudamire and two anonymous donors made the events and donation possible.
