For the last few months
Carmelo Anthony has been quietly killing cats on the court. Off the court however, Melo has been making some major moves investment-wise. He recently launched Kross Over Entertainment an entertainment company that would release music, produce movies and host different events.
“It’s much more than a record label,” Melo told us after being named Western Conference Player of the Week. “I have a documentary called Prison Ball coming out plus I have the Melo HOOD Movement coming this summer again.”
Melo told us that Prison Ball documents a tournament in the Louisiana prison system but hopes more than anything that young people who see the film will realize the consequences of bad decisions.
Last year Melo’s HOOD (Holding Our Own Destiny) Movement, a 3-on-3 tournament, saw success in Baltimore and he hopes to expand it even more this summer. But Melo is going to be pretty busy. He just got down with the Indy Racing League by becoming co-owner of the Hemelgarn team, whose driver P.J. Chesson will be racing in a baby blue ride named, what else but "Car Melo."
"It was just an offer that was presented to me and I went for it," Melo said. "I also have a cell phone service coming called Melo Mobile and an energy drink called C1.5, which will start in several different countries in Asia."
If that isn’t enough, the record label portion of his company is in full effect. His first artist,
Berg is making noise with his first single “Hold Up” feat.
Bun B. Melo also signed producer
Soundz 83 and singer
Alesia Miller with hopes of releasing projects this year.
Melo’s girl
Lala Vasquez (of MTV’s Direct Effect) is known to spit fire on the mic as well and Melo himself grew up in the streets of Baltimore, will either of them be getting in the booth to drop some rhymes?
“Nah man…,” Melo said laughing. “That wasn’t really my thing.”
No Babies Out Of Wedlock For Tony Parker
In an interview with Allure Magazine,
Eva Longoria said that she’s down to have babies with
Tony Parker, but he wants to be married first – she doesn’t.
"I would," Longoria told the magazine. "But Tony won't. ... He's only been with one other person in his life. He's very sweet. I'm the experienced one. I'm the teacher, especially about love. He's always telling me he's never met anyone who loves the way I do - wholly and freely and unconditionally."
But marriage? Not for Eva, for now anyway.
"No, no, no," she said. "But we know exactly what we want in our future."
How about French rapping babies?
DJ Jalen Rose Gives It Up For Hip-HopSince being traded to the New York Knicks
Jalen Rose has found new energy on the court. And off the court, Rose keeps it moving as a DJ. DJing was a hobby that quickly grew to a passion. In an interview with VIBE.com, Rose peels back the white labels and lets us know what he’s got in the crates.
“I got a real extensive vinyl collection, because I'm into not only just hip hop or rap. I'm into, obviously, the old school genre of rap, when you talk about
Public Enemy,
EPMD,
Grandmaster Flash,” Rose told VIBE.com. “I’ll reach deep down into the crate and grab an
E-40, the
Geto Boys, or songs that a lot a people will look back in the history and be like, ‘Wow, I remember that record.’ I get back there, and I blow dust off a couple of records. I take it back to
Sade,
Luther Vandross,
Al Green and
Curtis Mayfield. You gotta start with the roots first. Once you build from the roots, then it's easy for me to start collecting what's in the ‘90s and 2000s. But I have to lay down the roots first.”
But spinning records isn’t the only option Jalen has after basketball. He’s been blogging a little bit over at BET.com, doing some co-hosting duties on Fox’s Best Damn Sports Show, and doing some radio work with James Brown.
Well, the Knicks ain’t doing anything this postseason so at least Jalen has something to do. Check out his website at http://www.jalenrose.com.
Athletes Get Down With West CaicosWhen athletes finally make it to the big leagues a lot of the time that first check is put towards a new ride, maybe some platinum and ice or even a new house for momma; but after a few years when those knees are getting a little shaky those checks head towards investments.
Denver-based ProNet Capital, a private equity firm, has teamed up with
Nick Van Exel (San Antonio Spurs),
Amani Toomer (New York Giants),
LaVar Arrington (recently cut from the Washington Redskins) and several other current and retired pro athletes to finance a $300 million hotel and residential development on an uninhabited island in the Turks and Caicos Islands. The chain of 40 islands is located southeast of the Bahamas and east of Cuba.
"I'm at the point in my career where I need to be thinking about life after basketball," Van Exel told the Denver Post.
According to the Post, the project will feature a luxury hotel, condos, and single-family and custom-built homes ranging in price from $2.4 million to $8 million. Empty lots start at $850,000. The project's centerpiece is a 125-suite Ritz-Carlton spa and resort hotel named Molasses Reef, scheduled to be completed in 2008.
"If you've ever seen it or experienced it, you know it's a special place," Arrington told the Post of the island chain, where he was married last year. "It's one of my crown jewel investments."
