Birthday Surprise

Caron Butler

Caron Butler recently attended a surprise birthday party for 16-year-old Anthony Fadel. Was it a PR stunt? Not at all. Anthony's mother hand-delivered an invitation to Butlers house, and to everyone's surprise, Caron actually showed up and rocked the party.

When pro-athletes are in the offseason, they have quite a bit of time on their hands. Some go on vacation; some spend time with their families; some maybe record that rap album they’ve been itching to make. Washington Wizard Caron Butler, however, recently decided to kick it and party with a bunch of 16-year-olds. Anthony Fadel, a Washington, D.C.-area high school sophomore, has cousin who lives down the street from Butler. So when Fadel’s family was planning a surprise party for his 16th birthday, they sent his little sister to Butler’s house to give him a party invitation. They didn't hear anything. A week later, Fadel’s mother, Marie, again sent the little girl to give him another invite and Butler told her he might come. On the day of the party, before Anthony arrived, the Fadel family got a surprise of its own.

"I see a black Range Rover coming up my driveway," Mrs. Fadel told Dan Steinberg’s D.C. Sports Bog. "I looked out and I said, 'Oh my God, Caron Butler is here.' "

Butler went down to the basement and hung with Anthony’s friends while they waited for him to arrive for the surprise party.

"We just went downstairs, opened the door to the basement, and Caron Butler's just over there chilling with my friends," Anthony told Steinberg. "I couldn't say anything. I was just shocked."

Butler hung out with the kids, drank a Pepsi or two and watched the second half of Game 3 between the Cavs and Pistons. Before he left, he did have one gift for Anthony and handed him his cell phone.

"I just kind of grabbed it and it was Gilbert Arenas on the phone," Anthony told Steinberg. "I was just, like, shocked. So I talked to Gilbert for a little bit. He said happy birthday to me. I asked him about his leg."

After Butler left, Anthony and his friends played some five-on-five basketball and continued celebrating probably his best birthday ever.

Laila Ali Plans to Use Dance Skills at Wedding

Last week Laila Ali made an appearance on 'The View' and admitted she was a bit peeved about placing third on 'Dancing With the Stars.' But she still valued the experience and plans to use the skills she learned at her wedding. Ali is engaged to former NFL player Curtis Conway and when asked if she’ll cut the rug at the wedding, she said: "We have to go out there because, you know, our guests are going to be expecting a show.” "So Curtis is going to be in a little bit of a pressure zone?" asked co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck.

"Yeah, yeah. But he can handle it, though," Ali said.

So what’s next for Ali? Well, she’s planning to have knee surgery and told Newsweek that she wants her own cooking show.

“It has always been a dream of mine to have my own show, which could include cooking, fitness and other household components,” she said. “In fact, I just came out with a fitness/cardio DVD with Sugar Ray Leonard. My show would feature healthy food with fresh ingredients that taste great. My family is from Louisiana, so I do home-style food with a healthy twist! Anything unnecessary, like butter, I take out of the recipe.” So, umm, what’s up with the boxing career?

Tennis Star James Blake Rejoins Dunlop

When an athlete signs an endorsement deal, the athlete is actually supposed to use the product when they’re competing, in addition to appearing in commercials and prints ads. It was something tennis star James Blake felt he could not do with Prince, the company that was making tennis rackets for him. He told them that he wasn’t feeling their rackets and wanted to move on.

"James has concluded that, at this stage of his career, he is not prepared to switch to our technology and together, we have made the decision to move in a different direction," Prince CEO George Napier said in a released statement.

"I was playing the best tennis of my career and I guess I just wasn’t open to switching," Blake added. "I don’t know if superstition or habit came into it, but it felt like the right decision for me."

So what’s next? Blake went to the competition. Dunlop, the company that signed Blake to an endorsement deal when he turned pro in 1999, announced that he is back with Team Dunlop.

"I began my professional career at Dunlop, have played the best tennis of my career with a Dunlop frame and I am looking forward to calling Dunlop home again," said Blake. "The new Aerogel racquet technology provides several frame specifications that will suit my game well and give me the confidence to know that I can take my career to new heights."

At least he’s keeping it real.

    George Foreman Enters Racing World

    You Make the Call

Boxing legend George Foreman hasn’t been involved in sports since he retired in 1997, but now he and his sons are getting back in the swing of things with racing. They recently became co-owners of the Indy Racing League’s Panther Racing Team.

"This is a very special day for Panther Racing," team co-owner John Barnes told the Associated Press. "To add a true professional and sports legend like George Foreman to our ownership group is a tremendous boost to our team. George brings with him experience from decades in professional sports and the business savvy to help our team's sponsorship efforts. His passion for cultivating successful business opportunities is as strong as his career in the boxing ring. The Panther Racing franchise just got a lot stronger."

Panther Racing is a two-time IndyCar Series champion and fielded cars in the recent Indianapolis 500 for Vitor Meira, Kosuke Matsuura and John Andretti.

"I've been blessed throughout my life to partner with winning organizations," Foreman said. "Now that I am part of Panther Racing, I am looking forward to being part of a winning team."
