BV Sports Town Hall: Would You Take T.O.?

Posted: 2005-11-11 12:32:18
We don't have a nice sprawling front yard outside Philly from which to speak, but we took our case to America from the carpet-ish floors of the Black Voices office anyway. He's an athlete with immense physical gifts, but his mouth and ego can outshine his talent like a searchlight next to a 40-watt bulb.

Terrell Owens is too much for most DBs to handle, but he's too much for most teams to handle as well. Would you take No. 81 on your team?

    Back to BV Sports
Still, with all his problems, we asked you, "Would you take Terrell Owens on your team?" Responses leaned toward no, no and, in the words of Mrrevans5, "Hell Nawwwww." But we did hear from some of you who would take him back conditionally, some of you who would offer a tryout and some of you from the Isiah Thomas school of managment who wanted to build your team around him.

Now you'll have to excuse us, we have some ab workouts to do.

No, the fact that many people may not realize is T.O. really doesn't want to play football. He would rather be a victim of circumstance than someone called to handle the pressure of being one the best receivers in football. His level of sensitivity is too high to be a professional athlete.

He is physically gifted but his maturation level does not rise to the level necessary for this profession. His immaturity should have been addressed many years ago while in S.F. But again, people let it go because of his physical gifts. I hope he can get it together but somehow I don't see it.

    The Player's Life

    A Year in Gossip

The Player's Life turns one and we look back at the best sports gossip of the past year, from the Laila Ali-Queen Latifah Rumor to Stephen Jackson's wedding day mishap and of course, Eva, Eva, Eva!

      To Everybody:
Please wake up! T.O. is 500 percent right. He's just going about it the wrong way by dogging McNabb. T.O. is due 7.5 million dollars next year and the Eagles have not guaranteed him that they will resign him and pay him that money. Therefore, T.O. will not allow the Eagles the satisfaction of using him to get to the Super Bowl and then cut him for the bogus excuse of salary cap reasons. Owners across the league have been using this strategy on proven players who are instrumental to the team. Look what happened to Troy Brown in New England. He played both ways and was due 5 million. They brought him back for less than one million. Three-time Pro bowl CB Patrick Surtain of the Dolphins was due eight million dollars. They cut him and he had to find work elsewhere in Kansas City. Look what happened to Brian Westbrook, Jeremy Trottter, Corey Simon, David Akers, and Chad Lewis. All of those guys have been helping the Eagles get to the NFC title game but they have not been getting paid.

It's amazing how the Eagles over the past several days have extended the contracts of Akers, Lewis, and Westbrook. This is what T.O. is complaining about. This is what all the Eagles players and other players are complaining about but are afraid to complain publicly because of fear of being let go. TO is high profile player who can afford to speak out and he knows most teams will pick up a proven difference maker such as himself. Make no mistake, there are players in that Eagle locker room and around the league who are quietly rooting for T.O. Everybody must understand that these players do not have guaranteed contracts like the NBA and MLB. They have to make sure that every year is secured because if they get hurt the teams can let them go. Look at Javon Walker. He is only making $500,000. He was contemplating sitting out because he knew his market value was a big signing bonus of probably 8-10 million dollars. Now that he's hurt, you think he will ever see that? No!

I know we as fans don't have time to understand all of this because we are busy in our everyday lives trying to make 8-10 dollars an hour and when we sit down on Sunday we just want to see the stars on our teams playing and entertaining us. But remember, these guys are trying to secure themselves just like you. They are just getting paid just a little bit more. So don't hate. Appreciate someone like T.O. who is standing up and not allowing the white man to use him and laugh behind his back how they got over. Go T.O.!
