Shopping at the cosmetic counter can be overwhelming, hectic and a waste of time, if you don’t know what you’re doing. So, I’ve taken the time to put together a few suggestions to help you get on track and accomplish your makeup shopping goals.

Make a list and check it twice. Shopping lists are not just for the grocery store. Be sure to write down a list of products you are looking to purchase, which cosmetics needs to be replenished, and if there are any old products you want to replace with new ones. This will help you from being sold products you don’t want or need.

Just looking. If you're not ready to commit to a purchase and you'd like to browse a bit, tell the sales associate that you are just looking. This will take the pressure off of you and let her know she should go help another customer.

Time is money. Weekends are the busiest days for retail sales and that includes sales at cosmetics counters. If you know you need specialized attention regarding products and their uses, visit during the week (and definitely at least one hour before closing).

Boutique-style beauty. If the hustle and bustle of the cosmetic counter is not your thing, then visit a makeup studio or beauty store that offers cosmetic products. Here, you will usually find an expert who is capable of giving you the attention you desire and the expertise you require.

Sign up! Ask to be added to the mailing or email lists. This is a great way to get advance notice of sales, in-store events, and new season products launches.
