For a fun way to celebrate Black history and heritage, why not get your hair into the act? You can pay homage to truly groundbreaking cinematic sisters such as Diana Ross, Pam Grier, and today's triple-threat talent, Beyoncé, by emulating the chic and refined hairstyles they wore in some of our favorite flicks.
Read on for a rundown of their iconic dos, and advice for how to pull them off yourself.
'Lady Sings the Blues' (1972)
Miss Ross truly shines wearing the sleek buns and sophisticated updos of Lady Day in this biopic take on Billie Holiday's tragic life.
To re-create one of these special-occasion looks, go for a side-swept chignon. Start by roller-setting your hair, then wrapping it. Doing so will maintain the volume while giving it a smooth finish. After 20 minutes, brush your hair over to one side, then pull your tresses together at the base of the neck.
Roll your hair up into a French roll using your fingers, then secure it in place with small bobby pins. Comb the front of your hair down slightly into a curving S-shape along the side of your face. Seal the deal with a shot of Alberto VO5 Brush Out Hair Spray, then tuck a gardenia behind your ear for a dramatic effect!
'Coffy' (1973)
Long before the sassy rapper Trina proclaimed herself "Da Baddest B*tch," actress Pam Grier was living up to the moniker as Coffy, a butt-kicking nurse out for revenge on inner-city drug dealers. The movie poster even called her "The Baddest One-Chick Hit-Squad that ever hit town!"
But it's Coffy's oversize and defined Afro that is truly "bad." To copy this look, forget about the time-consuming task of braiding your hair and then picking it out, only to get an uneven bush effect. Instead, you need go no further than Afro World for a funky and inexpensive wig!
'Dreamgirls' (2006)
The highly successful Broadway musical of three young women seeking stardom has been turned into a celebrated film. It's brimming with Oscar nods and Golden Globe accolades, so why not check it out and peep the over-the-top, voluminous '60s dos? Oh, don't we just love big hair?
Now, if you want to be a Dreamette like Beyoncé's character, Deena Jones, then you've got to go for va-va-volume! And the best way to get high volume is by sitting under a hood dryer. For a quick and easy '60s hairstyle, start by setting your hair on big rollers.
After drying your hair, take out the rollers and make a small part across the top middle of your head. Comb your hair down on all sides and smooth it into place with your fingers, using Pantene Pro-V Style Smooth & Shine Anti-Frizz Serum.
Girl, you are now ready for your close-up!
