The Atlanta native who resembles a certain rapper (Don’t call him
LL Cool J –- it’s a pet peeve) is the host of TV One’s most popular show, ‘Turn Up the Heat with G. Garvin.’
The widely popular cooking show which just finished wrapping up its third season with 16 new episodes has been on the African-American network since 2004.
G. (short for Gerry) Garvin, an Atlanta native, got his start in cooking at the tender age of 15. In high school, he worked at the Ritz Carlton in Atlanta, which made him the youngest cook at the luxury hotel.
TV One was looking to have a cooking show on its network and after a phone call from a friend of Garvin, ‘Turn Up the Heat,’ was born.
The 30-minute show is different from traditional cooking shows.
On any given night, you can find Garvin preparing something as elegant as Lamb Stroganoff with an Endive Salad or something more practical like Spaghetti and Meatballs.
It is also one of the only cooking shows to feature an African American male chef.
‘I would describe our show as entertaining, educational and very regular and cool,” said Garvin. ‘It’s not all boring, it’s excitement. We got a couple of dumb jokes. It’s like your brother is in the kitchen and you’re just hanging out.’

Emeril Lagasse who has the distinct catchphrase of ‘Bam!’ Garvin has coined the term ‘Super Simple’ which applies to the meals he’s preparing in the kitchen.
‘If you have never made pizza dough from scratch, trying to make one from a recipe book is quite difficult,’ said Garvin. ‘I decided that I would create dishes that were just that, super simple. If I can do it, you can do it.’
Besides from making simple and tasty food, Garvin’s kitchen is no stranger to a slew of celebrities who has stopped by to cook with him.
Hill Harper,
Tracee Ellis Ross,
Bishop T.D. Jakes and Los Angeles Clippers guard
Cuttino Mobley have all been guests and have leant their hands to the show.
In late April, Garvin and his television show will hit the road to film a number of remote episodes throughout the United States. He is also in the process of releasing his debut cookbook, due out in October, which will include recipes from the show.
