Remote Control: 'Everybody Hates Chris'

The 80s are the new 70s and have been for a while now. Read on to find out what two writers, 10 years apart in age, remember about the 80s and what they think about Chris Rock's 'Everybody Hates Chris' - a bittersweet ode to the era.

My view of the '80s and 'Everybody Hates Chris' By Angela Bronner, born 1973 Age 9 in 1982

The '80s for me were a hodgepodge of emotions and memories, from heady days with no responsibilities to the travails of puberty. I went from the innocence of Pac-Man, rides on my pink Huffy Thunderbird and handling cabbage patch kids, hamsters and Rubix Cubes to doing the Cabbage Patch at Go-Gos, seeing Washington D.C.'s murder rate creep up daily, losing a family member to an new illness called AIDS, and daily reminders that many of my peers were made being made flush from crack rocks.

Speaking of rocks, another Rock (first name Chris) has brought the 80s back in all their neon glory in the breakout-UPN hit, 'Everybody Hates Chris.' Rock narrates the show a la 'The Wonder Years' with his 13-year-old alter ego, Tyler James Williams, capturing life with his parents and two siblings in 1982 Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn in the flesh.

The beauty of 'Everybody Hates Chris' is that Rock and co-creator Ali LeRoy somehow maintain the wholesomeness of my '80s while still touching on some of its more dismal points. The show treats teenage pregnancy, drug dealing and even race riots in a way which gives them respect, yet doesn't bog the show down. They say the funnier comedians are, the darker they are on the inside, which is good because sometimes it's preferable to laugh at darkness than to cry.

'Everybody Hates Chris' strikes a beautiful balance between the decade that makes me smile wistfully and the decade that made me an adult. And if nothing else, 'Chris' rocks a phat (yes, '80s lingo) soundtrack to boot. Take me back!

My view of the '80s and 'Everybody Hates Chris' By Marcus Vanderberg, born 1983 In the womb in 1982

The 1980s for me is a bit of a blur as a youngster growing up in Inglewood, California. But the parts that I struggle with remembering, 'Everybody Hates Chris' does a great job of filling in the blanks.

The show does an excellent job of dealing with those embarrassing yet memorable moments of the '80s like buying generic food over name brand. As a 22-year-old broke college student, I buy generic brand foods and have no shame.

But as a 6-year-old, name brand is everything. I hated those days when I would open up my Thundercats lunch pal in elementary school to find Hydrox cookies instead of Oreos!

One noticeable thing missing from the episodes I have seen is the hairstyles that the 1980s are known for like the jeri curl. As a kid, I was fascinated with the jeri curl. Oh how I longed to have 'wet hair' as a child. It wasn't until I saw the movie 'Coming to America' for the first time that I realized it easily has to be the most disgusting hairstyle in the history of hairstyles. No wonder my mother would never let me add the activator bottle to the grocery cart.

Overall the show does a great job of reminiscing about one the most memorable decades while mixing in the comedic genius of Chris Rock.

Everybody Hates Chris airs on UPN Thursdays at 8pm, ET
