Flavor Flav, revolutionary rap’s first hype-man, is now three years deep into his reality TV hustle. It all began with Flav’s ‘Surreal Life 3’ debut, where Flav struggled to coexist in a house full of other celebrity has-beens. It was there that Flav caught the eye of Sylvester Stallone’s ex-wife Brigitte Nielsen and the two developed what America confirmed was a very ‘Strange Love’ indeed. It was a reality TV love affair so strange that it actually became a hit, and won Flav his starring role in ‘The Flavor of Love.’ However, it’s unlikely that America ever thought that ‘Love’ would taste like this.

Whereas ‘Strange Love’ almost made Flav into a believable hopeless romantic dealing with a woman tough enough to go toe to toe with Rambo, ‘The Flavor of Love’ does its best to cast Flav as the ultimate hip hop bachelor with an entourage of bubbly groupies who fiercely compete for his love.

On the Pulse

Did we say groupies? Our apologies. It should be made clear that Flav isn’t looking to defame anyone’s character. In, fact he’s even given a pet name to every potential paramour. Red Oyster, a sassy Asian temptress with a penchant for red and no qualms about snitching. Pumpkin, a lily-white girl who’s dance lessons will surely pay-off somewhere down the line, and Smiley, the California beach babe better known as Alexis on WWE, just to name a few of the stand outs.

Flav recently decided that time had run out for contestants Serious and Peaches, literally. As part of the ousting ceremony Flav and his body guard Big Rick stand before a wall of his signature clocks, each with a headshot of one of the contestants for the face. When their time is up, their clock is taken off the wall. It’s a symbolic gesture that many original Public Enemy fans might like to see happen to Flav himself.

The legacy of Public Enemy is one of the few that exemplify what hip-hop had to offer before it became infatuated with video vixens and studio gangsters. Flav himself authored one of the most popular critiques of services in the hood called ‘911 is Joke.’ Last year, after getting hit with questions about Flav’s ‘Strange Love’ from every angle, Chuck D released the following statement: “Public Enemy is not a fraternity, nor a political or religious organization, and thus everyone has their own individual personal agendas. But together we make music and are dedicated to spreading the good word around the planet. I would be lying if I said that the side of Flav shown on ‘Strange Love’ doesn’t affect what I’ve wanted our collective to stand for, because it does and many have told us how deeply they are bothered by this.” It’s unclear if much of the viewing audience is as bothered as Chuck D is by Flav’s recent exploits but we certainly know that Flav isn't sweating it. In fact, after introducing viewers to his mother, his dysfunctional relationship with his children and his baby mother, the only question we have is what’s the name of his next show?
