Kevin Jerome Everson is no stranger to the Sundance Film Festival. The self-proclaimed "avant gutterist" and Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Virginia has presented four films at Sundance already, and this year is scheduled to premiere his black drag racing film 'Cinnamon.'

However, this year Everson is bringing Black Voices to Sundance with him, well, sort of. As the latest BV Celebrity blogger, Everson will post to his Selling Cinnamon @ Sundance blog daily while attending the festival. It's a unique opportunity to see the festival through the eyes of a black filmmaker, particularly since last year's festival favorite was the very black 'Hustle & Flow.'

But before Everson made his way to Sundance - or what he affectionately calls "spring break with money" -- he took the time to answer a few questions about his work.

So tell me a bit about 'Cinnamon' and what you do as a filmmaker.

It's about a black female drag racer -- but what I do is I look at black culture and anything in it, because I'm an artist first. I mostly do photo and sculpture and stuff, but what I look for is the art in everyday life; like, people understanding their craft. In the film the language is almost inaudible, so to me they could be talking about art when they're talking, but they're really just talking about drag racing and the preparation and stuff. So it's all this kind of imagery.

When you created 'Cinnamon,' did you intend to submit it to Sundance?

Oh yeah, ever since I first got into Sundance in '98, it helps my schedule. I mean most of the big film festivals, the due date for submission is late, late September. So I just try to get done before then and submit stuff. Apparently, in America Sundance is the only game in town. It's the only film festival that you attend to be considered a "Sundance filmmaker." You can be in a Tribeca Film Festival, but you will never be considered a "Tribeca filmmaker."

Along with the 'Cinnamon' trailer you're also presenting two short films on BV, tell me about those.

I've made close to 30 films over the past 10 years. 'Blind Huber' is one of three films I had done before collaborating with other poets, and it's based on a poem by a guy named Nick Flynn. 'Aquarius' is just like, a take on astrology.

As a black filmmaker making his fifth trip to Sundance, what advice can you offer any aspiring filmmakers trying to get there for the first time?

Just finish. You've just got to make some work. You can't be bullsh@tting. That's all I can tell people. That's what I tell my students. In the film industry -- I think the art world as well because I show a lot of stuff in museums -- and in the art world, you got to be an artist. You can't talk unless you have work. But somehow or another, the film world is interesting because people go "I'm a director" or a producer, and they haven't done sh@t. A lot of people talk but you've just got to finish a project. And then have the type of discipline to keep working on more work.

So, what's your next film on?

The new film is going to be about Alexander De Medici, one of the Medicis in Italy. They bought a lot of artwork and they were big bankers in Florence, but one of them was black. So it's going to be slightly based on him, but based on whole ideals and concepts of beauty, all kinds of weird sh@t going on in it. So this one will be a lot more experimental than 'Cinnamon.' I'm going to regress back to the gutter. Got to be done, got to be done.
