"In my memory's sketch of early childhood, drawn by an artist of the impressionist school, there is one image that stands out above the rest -- which when called forth is preceded by the mouth-watering aroma of pancake syrup warming in a skillet and the crackling, bubbling sounds of the syrup transforming magically into homemade pull candy. 1. A Hollywood producer contacted Gardner about making 'The Pursuit of Happyness' into a movie after seeing him on '60 Minutes.'

2. Gardner thinks Smith's portrayal of him is accurate.

3. He is the father of two beautiful kids who he has raised with "a minimum of baby mama drama."

4. HarperCollins reportedly gave Gardner a six-figure advance for the "as told to" story of his life.

5. In 1983 Gardner was homeless and slept in shelters with his son.
